The Skill/Will Matrix is a coaching tool for deciding how to manage each person on your team. You place someone on two axes — how much skill they have for the task in front of them, and how much will (their motivation, confidence and drive for it) they bring — and the quadrant they land in points to the leadership style that will actually help them grow.
High skill and high will means delegate and get out of the way; high will but low skill means guide and coach; high skill but low will means motivate and re-engage; low on both means direct closely until one of them lifts. The insight is that the same hands-off style that grows a confident expert will sink someone who is anxious and new — so you match your approach to the person in front of you, not to your own default habit.
