The City on the Water

Narrator: On the third night out of Cuba, the sea stopped pretending to be a road. Beltrán de Coria had been sick against the rail for two days and had begun, privately, to look forward to drowning as a change of scene — and then the wind came round hard from the north, and he found he was not ready to die after all, which surprised him, because he had not thought he had that much left to lose. He had heard old soldiers say a storm at sea is louder than a battle, and had not believed them, because nothing is louder than a battle. He believed them now. The little caravel went up a black hill of water and hung at the top of it with her whole belly showing, and came down the far side like a dropped plate. Somewhere below, sixteen horses that had cost more than Beltrán would earn in a life screamed in the dark, and the whole hull boomed like a struck drum, and a man could not hear the man beside him and did not want to.
Bram: BELTRÁN: Santiago. Santiago and Santa Bárbara and every blessed saint who was ever cold and wet — I counted eleven of us at the rail this morning and I'll thank you to keep all eleven, myself especially.
Narrator: This was how he prayed: like a man haggling. He counted because counting was the one thing the fear could not take from him — eleven men, sixteen horses, a captain he had staked his one life on, and no coast anywhere in the whole roaring world. Somewhere above him a topman named Sancho was out on the yard with a fistful of wet canvas, doing the mad brave stupid work that keeps a ship from turning turtle, and Beltrán loved him the way you love a man who is doing the thing you are too frightened to do. Then the wind put its shoulder to the sail, and the ship leaned, and leaned, and did not stop leaning. The yard came round with a crack like a snapped bone. Sancho went with it — out over the black water and back, and out again — and Beltrán was moving before he decided to, three men on a rope that was trying to take their hands off, hauling a screaming shape out of the dark, and when they got him in over the rail the hand was wrong, the fingers of it crushed flat and folded the way no living hand folds.
Bram: BELTRÁN: Hold him — hold him, I have him — Sancho, you great fool, you were told to tie on, God's wounds, hold the light steady —
Narrator: A wave took one of the others clean off the deck and gave him back, coughing, ten feet aft; it did not always give them back. And Beltrán knelt in the wash with a maimed man's ruin of a hand pressed between both of his own and understood, all at once and for the first time, the size of the thing he had done. He had signed the one life he owned onto a wooden box the width of a barn, to cross a sea that did not know his name, for a share of a treasure no one had yet seen, at the word of a gentleman from Medellín who owed money in three ports.
Bram: BELTRÁN: You're not dying tonight. Do you hear me? Nobody's paying us to die tonight. We die when there's gold in it, and there's no gold in a wave.
Narrator: Sancho laughed, or sobbed; in that noise you could not tell them apart. And Beltrán looked up past the rag of the sail into a sky with nothing in it — no star, no coast, no sign that the world had a far side at all — and asked the only question that mattered, the one he would not have said aloud for a year's pay.
Bram: BELTRÁN: Is there even anything out there? Or did I wager the whole of me on a grave with a wet floor?
Narrator: This is Chronicles — history, lived from the inside. This is Flower and Song: the wonder and the fall of the greatest city in the Americas, told from within the lives that met inside it. Episode one — "The City on the Water." Everyone you are about to follow tonight lived — or lived close enough to the truth that the record would know them. One of them, a woman you have not met yet, was real, and left her name on history. The rest are woven from the real record, so that you can stand where standing is otherwise impossible: on a temple's summit at dawn, on a soldier's rotten deck, at the edge of a war council whose silence will lose a world. What they see is real. That they are these particular people is the story's gift to you. Keep the far sight of them; we will square the account at the end, as we always do. A year before the strangers' storm, and a whole world west of the sea it happened on, there was a city on a lake, and it was keeping a feast-day. On the summit of the great temple, in the thin gold light before the sun cleared the eastern volcanoes, Chimalli stood where only a handful of men in the world were permitted to stand, and looked down at the reason for everything. Below him the city lay on its lake like a thing set down by a careful god. White plaster and cut stone, bright already where the light found it; the three long straight causeways running out over the water to the shore, wide enough for ten men abreast; the canals threading between the houses where in any other city there would be streets, and on the canals the first canoes of the morning, black slivers waking, a farmer poling green fodder in from the floating gardens, a woman with her load of flowers. Nearer, ringed by its own serpent-wall, the sacred precinct — a whole district of stuccoed pyramids and shrines, dozens of them, painted in fierce reds and blues, out of which the temple he stood on rose tallest of all. Beyond the roofs, the lake; beyond the lake, the ring of mountains; and over the whole valley, hung in the cold air with snow on their shoulders, the two volcanoes — the smoking one and the sleeping woman beside him. A raft of ducks came up off the reeds all at once, and the sound of their wings crossed the water a long moment after the sight of them. Chimalli was a big man, close to forty, with the scarred forearms of a soldier who had taken his enemies alive, which is harder and more dangerous than killing them; and none of that was in his face now. He had walked up out of the mud of a chinampa plot forty years ago, a farmer's son who was owed nothing, and had taken his rank the only way a commoner could take it — one captured man at a time — until they gave him the jaguar-skin and a seat on the war council. He knew exactly what the city had cost. He looked at it the way a man looks at something he has paid for with his whole life, and found it worth the price. The city was waking under him as he watched, and its waking had an order to it he never tired of. Along the twin stone channel of the great aqueduct that came in from the springs of Chapultepec, the fresh water ran in one side while the other stood empty and drying, so that the city drank sweet water always and one channel could be cleaned while the other flowed — a thing no city in the world he would never see could manage. Canoes of night-soil went out toward the gardens, because in this city even a man's waste was carried away and put to use and nothing wasted. Sweepers were already in the plaza below, a thousand of them by the tally, keeping a city of a quarter-million cleaner than any street in the Spain whose sons were, at that hour, three weeks out on a black sea and did not know this place existed. It ran. That was the marvel under the beauty. It ran.
Chimalli: The flower, the song. The only true thing in a passing life is the flower and the song — and here is the flower, and here is the song, all at once, and the sun not even up.
Narrator: Flower and song — in xochitl in cuicatl, in their own tongue — was the Nahua name for poetry itself, and with it for everything that was beautiful and mattered and would not last: the only true thing, they held, that a passing life could keep. Chimalli made verses, privately, badly, the way half the men of his world did — the little transient poems the Nahua treasured precisely because they lasted no longer than the morning that made them. He would never show anyone. He watched the light come down the temple stair below him, watched it find the plastered pyramids one after another across the sacred precinct, and thought, as he thought most mornings, that the debt was worth paying to keep a thing like this in the world. Today the debt would be paid. It was a feast-day. First the sun, and then his son. By the time the sun stood clear of the mountains the precinct below was full. This is the part a stranger cannot be told, only shown, and so we will stand where Chimalli stands and see it as he sees it, without flinching and without apology. The drum had a voice you felt in the breastbone before you heard it in the ear — the great serpent-skin drum whose note, they said, carried two leagues across the water. The priests came in their soot-black, their long hair matted with old blood and copal, ears torn ragged from a lifetime of the small bloodlettings; and the smoke of the incense went up in ropes, sharp and sweet, and under it, faint and iron, the smell of the stone itself. Marigold everywhere, heaped and strewn, orange as a second sunrise. The captive climbed the stair between two priests, and he was not dragged. That is the thing. He climbed. He was a warrior taken in the summer's fighting, and he had been kept these months as a man keeps a costly guest, and the man who took him had fed him and called him, in the old formula, my beloved son — and would grieve him. Chimalli knew the formula in his body. His own first captive, twenty years gone, a Tlaxcalan taken in a flower-war when Chimalli was seventeen and terrified and certain he would fail — he had kept that man, and fed him, and walked him up a stair like this one, and the man had turned at the top and called him beloved son, and Chimalli had understood in that instant what the whole of it was FOR. Not hatred. Never hatred. The debt. The gods had bled themselves to set the sun moving; the sun moved on the strength of blood freely given back; and a world that stopped paying was a world that let the sun stop, and the sky fall, and the dark come in for good. So the priest bent him back over the stone, and the obsidian went in under the ribs where the priests alone knew the way, and the heart came up into the light still working, still a live and beating thing, and was lifted to the sun that it fed. And the body came down the long stair, turning, the way water comes down a stair, and was received below with the gravity due to a thing that had just done the most important work a body can do. And the sun stood in the sky, and did not fall. It had been kept alight for one more day. Chimalli watched with his hands still at his sides and something in his chest gone wide and quiet, the way it went at the top of the temple in the dawn. Awe. Not the horror a stranger would feel — the awe of a man who believes, entirely, that he has just watched the world be saved. Both of those things were in that plaza at once, the horror and the holiness, and neither one of them cancelled the other. There would be others today; it was a feast-day, and the debt was large. But the arithmetic of it was not what a stranger imagines: it was this, done with weight and care, a handful of costly guests walked up a stair between priests, each one a whole ceremony, each one believed to buy a morning. And when it was finished the priests washed the stone, and the marigolds were swept and renewed, and the smoke went up unbroken, and the ordinary business of the holiest place in the world resumed — the boys of the priests' school reciting, the incense-bearers on their rounds, a city getting on with the day its blood had bought.
Chimalli: It is paid. The morning is bought. Let the world do exactly this again tomorrow.
Narrator: On the deck, the morning after the storm, the sea was flat and innocent as a nun and Beltrán did not trust it an inch. He sat with his back to the mast, in the one dry patch, drying his one dry shirt, and took the census of the company's fools, which was his favourite occupation and cost nothing.
Bram: BELTRÁN: Right. Living: the eleven of us at the rail, praise God, minus Sancho's two useful fingers, which are presently feeding the fish and much good may they do them. Item: the horse-master swears we lost no horse, which means we lost a horse and he's not telling the captain. Item: Father Olmedo the chaplain has been on his knees since Tuesday and I for one am not convinced it helped — no offence, father, keep at it, a man never knows which prayer's the one that works. Item: my boots. My boots went over the side in the night, and I want it entered in the record that a soldier who crosses an ocean for the King of Spain arrives to conquer a hemisphere with one boot and a bad temper, and that this is not how the songs will tell it.
Narrator: This was how Beltrán did grief — inventory. He had learned it in two years in the Indies, that you keep the fear at arm's length by counting what's left, and you keep the men's fear at arm's length by counting it out loud and making it funny, and that a company that can laugh in the morning after a night like that is a company that will still be a company by evening. It was, though he'd have died before he called it that, a kind of care. He looked round the ring of wet, unshaved, exhausted, grinning faces — his family, more his family now than the one in Coria he'd sent no word to in two years — and felt the fierce ridiculous love a man feels for the fools he nearly drowned beside, and covered it, the way he covered everything, with the next joke. There was a Greek among them, a gunner named Arbenga who spoke four languages badly and complained in all of them, and it was Arbenga who asked the question the whole ship carried and no one said.
Arbenga: And what are we for, exactly, Beltrán de Coria? A man likes to know what he drowned for. And I'll tell you what's bothering the men, since nobody else will say it in daylight. The governor of Cuba fitted this fleet. The governor of Cuba paid for it. And the governor of Cuba sent word before we sailed — you're relieved, Cortés, come home — and we did not come home. We sailed. So which is it: are we the King's men, or are we thieves who stole a fleet?
Narrator: The deck went quiet in the way a deck goes quiet when someone finally names the thing. Beltrán let it sit a moment, because he had a soldier's instinct for the weight of a silence, and then he did what he always did with a weight — he made it lighter so a man could carry it.
Bram: BELTRÁN: We're the King's men, Greek. We'll be very much the King's men the day we send His Majesty a boatload of gold, and on that day nobody in Castile will remember whose fleet it was. That's the trick of it. A rebel with empty hands hangs. A rebel with a full one gets a coat of arms and a street named after him. — And as for what we're for? We came to serve God — — and also to get rich. No, listen. There's no shame in the pair of them. My priest at Coria says gold is a snare, and my priest at Coria has one pair of boots, so you'll forgive me if I take my theology off a man with dry feet. I'm a third son, friend. Third sons get the road. In Coria I'm nothing till the day I die and a smaller nothing after. Out here — out here a nobody with a sharp blade and a hard head can come home with land and a name and people of his own, and stand in the church he was christened in as somebody. That's the whole of it. God, and gold, and getting to be a man. I don't see the seam between them, and I've looked.
Narrator: They laughed, because he meant it and because he was funny, and both of those were true at once. And then he stopped laughing, briefly, and looked west at the low green line that was beginning to firm up out of the haze — an island, an actual island, with actual trees on it — and something moved in him that he did not have a joke ready for, and so he found one.
Bram: BELTRÁN: There. See it? Land. — Bet you a week's wine it's got no wine.
Narrator: In the city, later that same feast-day, Chimalli took his son to the market, because a boy about to leave for school should see once more what his city was — and because Chimalli, if he was honest, wanted to walk through it beside the boy and be, for one hour, only a father showing off the place he was proud of. The great market at Tlatelolco, in the city's twin across the water, was a roar you heard before you saw — a sound made of tens of thousands of voices haggling, that the Spaniards, when they finally stood in it, swore could be heard a league off, and that men who had seen Rome and Constantinople said they had never met the like of. Everything the world made was there, and everything was in its right place, because that was the point of it: gold in its lane and feathers in theirs, cacao that was money and food both, obsidian blades laid out in ranks that caught the light like black water, medicine, cloth, chile in pyramids taller than a child, live turkeys and small hairless dogs, dye, the caged birds, and — in its own quarter, matter-of-fact as the salt — the sellers of slaves. The ordered rows went on past where a man could see, and judges walked the lanes to keep the trade honest on the spot, and canoes came in loaded to the market's own water-steps and went out empty. No cart anywhere. No wheel, no ox, no horse — everything that moved through that market had come in on a human back or down a canal in a canoe, and it fed a quarter of a million souls. Chimalli bought the boy a cup of frothed chocolate, bitter and spiced and running with the flowers of the cacao, and paid for it in cacao beans counted out of a cotton pouch — the same beans that were the drink and the money both, so that a man in that market could quite literally drink his purse. He showed Tozca the feather-workers in their lane, the amanteca, bent over their frames laying the barbs of quetzal and cotinga one at a time into a design that would move like green water when a lord turned in the sun; the amanteca were their own guild, their own calpulli, and held their craft as sacred as the priests held theirs. He steered the boy, without a word, wide around the far corner where the slave-sellers had their platform — the porters and the field-hands and, at the edge, the captives kept for the stone, standing garlanded and quiet — because a made man does not need to explain to his son that the market sold men in the same ordered rows it sold turkeys and dye; the boy would learn the whole shape of the world soon enough, and Chimalli wanted, for one more hour, to show him only its beauty.
Tozca: Father — how do they know? All of them, all at once, how does everyone know where everything is?
Chimalli: Because someone decided it, and everyone agreed, and now it is simply true. That is what a city is, Tozca. A great many people agreeing to the same true thing, so hard and so long that it holds up the sky.
Narrator: The boy took that in with the seriousness he took everything in — he was clever, cleverer than his father, which was the whole point of him — and Chimalli watched him look at the city and felt the helpless thing move in his chest again, the flower-and-song thing, and thought: this. This is the world I am keeping. Let it hold. Let it be here for the boy, and the boy's boys, and after I am gone. The storm blew itself out in the night, and for three days more the fleet ran south under a scoured sky until the pilots raised a low green line out of the sea — an island, flat, with white temples and low houses, that the Spaniards were learning to call Cozumel. They stood in and dropped anchor off its beach, and the company went ashore and made a camp on the strand; and there, on the sand, with the ships riding at anchor behind them, a rumour ran through the camp that stopped even Beltrán's mouth. There were bearded men, the traders said. Somewhere on the mainland shore across the strait — for the island was not the true land, only a stepping-stone off its coast — among the Maya there were men with beards, held these many years, men, that is to say, like them. The captain sent a canoe across the water and a ransom of green beads, and told it to wait six days, and the whole company waited with it, because a Christian left alive among the heathen was a thing that pulled at every man who had lain awake wondering how he would end. On the sixth day the canoe came back, and there was a shape in the bow that the men on the beach could not, at first, sort into a category. It was burned near black by eight years of that sun. Its hair had been shaved to a slave's stubble and grown out wrong. It was near naked, a paddle in its blistered hands, and around its neck on a cord it wore a little battered thing that Beltrán, squinting, took for an amulet, and was not — was a book, a breviary, a book of hours swollen and stained and held together with reeds, the pages of it soft as cloth. The shape came up out of the shallows and looked at the steel and the crosses and the sunburned Castilian faces, and its mouth worked, and what came out was Maya. Then something broke behind the burned face, and the man went down on his knees in the surf, and he said — slow, cracked, digging each word up out of a place he had buried it eight years deep — Dios. Y Santa María. Y Sevilla. God, and Holy Mary, and Seville. And then he wept, which a soldier is not supposed to watch, and Beltrán watched anyway, because there are some things a man has no business not watching.
Aguilar: Are you — are you Christians? Are you truly? Say the day. Someone tell me the day. I have kept the day. I kept the count on the — on the — — I have not missed a Friday in eight years, God is my witness, I kept the fasts, I kept myself — they could not make me — I am a priest still, do you hear, I am still a priest, they took everything and they did not take that —
Narrator: His name was Gerónimo de Aguilar. He had been a friar, wrecked on this coast eight years before, and enslaved, and had survived the way a certain kind of man survives — not by bending but by going rigid; by building a little iron cell of faith and fasting and celibacy inside himself and living in it, refusing the women the Maya offered him, keeping his count of days like a man keeping his own name. Everything soft in him had been used up as fuel to keep that cell standing. And it had worked. He had endured. Beltrán, who read men the way a poacher reads a wood, looked at this rigid, weeping, holy scarecrow and felt two things at once: a plain human pity, and a soldier's cold small notice — that here was a man who spoke the tongue of this whole strange coast, and that the captain's eyes, across the beach, had gone to Aguilar the instant the Maya came out of his mouth, and had not been pity at all.
Bram: BELTRÁN: There's your first piece of gold, Greek, and it doesn't shine. A man who can talk to them. The captain'll not let that out of his sight now. — Poor devil thinks he's been rescued. He's been hired.
Narrator: They gave him a shirt, and a razor, and a Mass; and Father Olmedo, the fleet's own friar, a mild practical man who was forever telling armed and zealous soldiers to wait, sat with him a long while and heard the eight years out of him, and afterward would say only that the man had kept his rule better on a Maya leash than half the friars in Spain kept it in a cloister. And within a day the thing Beltrán had foreseen came true: when a party of the Cozumel lords came down to treat with the strangers, it was Aguilar they stood the newly-shaved scarecrow up beside the captain to do the talking, and his cracked Maya, bleeding at the edges with disuse, went out and came back and went out again, and for the length of that parley Gerónimo de Aguilar — who had been nothing, a slave, a beast of burden, for eight years — was the single most necessary man on that beach, the one thread the whole conversation between two worlds ran along. He stood very straight in his borrowed shirt while he did it. You could see what it meant to him, to matter. And Beltrán, watching, felt the pity come back, because he could see the other thing too, the thing Aguilar could not: that a man made precious for one skill is a man with exactly one skill, and that a skill is a thing another person can learn.
Bram: BELTRÁN: Stand tall while you can, father. Nothing rarer than a man who can do the one thing that's needed. And nothing cheaper, the day somebody else learns it.
Narrator: In the city, in the afternoon, on the causeway to the calmecac — the lordly school, the school for the sons of the nobility — Chimalli walked his son to a door he himself had never been allowed to enter. He had gone to the other school, the commoners' house, because a farmer's son went where farmers' sons went. Everything sacred that Chimalli knew, he had learned by climbing up toward it from below, hand over hand, on the strength of captured men. And now his son — his son — was walking through the high door on the strength of nothing but Chimalli's whole life, walking in as of right, the way the lords' sons walked in, to learn the calendar and the old speech and the reading of the stars, to become the kind of man who had always, always looked at Chimalli as a useful exception to a rule. This was the thing he had climbed for. This was the meaning of the twenty years and the scars and the men on the stone. And at the door he found he could not say any of it. He opened his mouth to tell the boy what this was, what it had cost, how far they had come — and his throat closed on the whole of it, and he understood that if he began he would not keep his face, and a warrior does not weep at a school door in front of the masters. So he put his hand on the boy's shoulder, once, and he said nothing at all.
Tozca: Father? Are you angry?
Chimalli: No. Go in. Be better than me. That is an order from your commander. Go in, my beloved son.
Narrator: And the boy went in, and the door took him, and Chimalli stood on the causeway a while with the lake going gold around him and the words he had not managed to say sitting in his chest like a stone he would carry for the rest of a life that did not, though he could not know it, have very much of the rest left in it. Before they left Cozumel, Cortés had the whole company drawn up on the strand, and Beltrán got his first long look at the man he had bet the whole of himself on, and did not know what to make of him — which was itself the beginning of understanding him. Hernán Cortés was not large, and not loud, and that was the unsettling thing — everyone else on that beach was arranging himself around a man who was doing almost nothing at all. He was perhaps thirty-four, pale under the sea-tan, dark-bearded, dressed well but not gaudy, a plain religious medal at his throat. Word had spread by then about the governor's letter, the way Arbenga had said it out loud on the deck — are we the King's men or are we thieves? — and a company that asks that question is a company one bad night from turning for home. Cortés knew it. You could see he knew it. And instead of shouting the doubt down, he did something a shouting man never thinks to do. He gave the doubt to them, and made it theirs.
Bram: CORTÉS: I have heard it said, quietly, that we sail on a licence the governor has withdrawn. I will not tell you it is false. I will tell you a truer thing. A governor gives licences. A King gives kingdoms. We did not cross this ocean to be the errand-boys of a man in Cuba — we crossed it to lay a new realm and its souls at the feet of His Majesty, who is the fountain of all licences and answerable to none. So let us do it as free men and as Christians do: not as my venture, but as ours. Let us found it in law. Let us elect our own officers, and swear our own oaths, and make ourselves a town and a company that answers to the Crown alone — and then let any man in Cuba call us thieves, and let him say it to the King.
Narrator: And the men, who had been afraid they were criminals, cheered — because he had just handed them, in place of a hanging, a share in a lawful enterprise of their own making, sworn and signed. Beltrán, who had spent his life reading his betters the way a poacher reads a wood, watched him touch that little medal at his throat before he spoke, and understood that the touching came after the deciding — that the prayer was a seal on a thing already chosen, not a way of choosing it. He had watched a mutiny be turned, in the space of one soft speech, into the free and legal choice of the men who committed it. He had watched a man make himself unarrestable with nothing but words and a notary.
Bram: BELTRÁN: You know what he is? He's a lawyer with a sword. He didn't argue us out of the fear — he used it. Gave every one of us a share in the crime so there's no one left to swear against him. — I heard he read two years of law at Salamanca and quit. He didn't quit anything, Greek. He's using it right now. We're the jury he just bought.
Arbenga: And that's a man to follow?
Narrator: What Beltrán did not say, because he was still turning it over, was the smaller thing he had noticed and could not stop noticing — that when the cheering was at its height, and every man on the beach was sworn and bound and delighted with his own courage, the captain had not cheered. He had stood in the middle of it with his hand at his throat, watching the faces, counting them the way Beltrán counted bolts in the dark, marking who shouted loudest and who shouted late and who did not shout at all. He was not moved by the moment he had made. He was reading it. And a man who can make a room drunk and stay sober in the middle of it is a man who will always, always know something about you that you do not know he knows.
Bram: BELTRÁN: God help me, I'd follow him into the sea. A rebel with no way home but forward, and a rope waiting if he loses — which means he cannot lose, which means he'll spend anything not to. And we are the anything. I'd grumble the whole way down. But I'd follow him. And I'd keep one eye on him the whole time, because a man like that spends the anything without ever once raising his voice, and you don't hear the coin drop till it's your own name he's counting out.
Narrator: There was another captain Beltrán learned to watch that week, and he learned to watch him the way you watch a dog you have not decided about. His name was Pedro de Alvarado — a big, laughing, red-bearded Extremaduran, handsome as a saint's picture, quick and light on his feet as a dancer; the men liked him, which was the dangerous part, because a man that easy to like gets given things a harder man would have to earn. Cortés trusted him above almost anyone. And Beltrán, three days into knowing him, would not have trusted him to hold his dinner. It was nothing that started it. It was always going to be nothing. A porter from the island — a Maya boy, one of those helping strike the camp — dropped a bundle of Alvarado's harness in the wet sand, or was thought to have taken something from it, or simply moved too slow past a man in a temper; nobody afterward agreed, because it did not matter. What mattered was the speed. There was a beat of ordinary irritation, the kind that in any other man ends in a curse and a cuff — and then Alvarado was across the space with his sword half out and his beautiful face wide open in what a fool might take for joy, and he had the boy by the hair, bending him back, and the blade came up. Two men caught his arm. It took two of them, and they were shouting his name, and for one long ugly moment Alvarado leaned into it, still grinning, testing whether they meant it, whether anyone in this new world was actually going to stop him — and then he laughed, out loud, delighted, and let the arm be pulled down, and shoved the shaking boy away into the sand, and made a joke, and the men who had grabbed him laughed too, because it was over and because you laugh when a thing you were frightened of turns out to be a game. Beltrán did not laugh. Beltrán stood very still with the flat cold feeling of a man who has just seen the true shape of a thing under the pretty surface of it. Because it had not been temper. Temper is hot and passes. This had been the opposite — a man reaching for the blade the way another man reaches for a cup of water, the easy and untroubled first thought of someone for whom killing had simply never once been expensive. The company would come, in time, to need exactly that in him, and to send him first into every fight, and to love him for it. And a year and more from that beach, in a city Beltrán had not yet seen, on a bright feast-day among unarmed dancers, this same man would reach for this same blade with this same untroubled ease, and turn the wonder of the world to war — and the people of that city, who did not yet know his name, would name him then for the thing he most resembled coming down on them. They would call him Tonatiuh. The Sun.
Bram: BELTRÁN: No. Not temper. God keep me on the far side of the camp from that one. A man who solves being frightened with a knife — and he's never once frightened enough to stop. That's not a soldier. That's a fire someone's decided to carry into a dry country.
Narrator: In the palace, in the smoke of the council hall, Chimalli waited his turn, and touched the obsidian edge of his club before he spoke, the way another man clears his throat. The scouts had come up from the eastern coast, and they had brought not words only but pictures — folded books of bark-paper, painted fresh, laid open now on the mats before the lords. A stranger would have seen only bright figures on paper. The council saw an intelligence report. Here: houses that moved on the water, big as small hills, with white wings — drawn twice, because they had been seen twice, a season past and a season before that. Here: men the colour of the underside of things, faced with hair, sheathed in a grey metal that the painters had rendered as fish-scale because they had no other sign for it. Here: a beast, gone wrong somehow, a deer the size of a house that a man sat upon. And here, painted small and careful in the corner because the scouts had been most frightened of it and least able to draw it: a tube of metal that made a clap like the sky breaking and killed a man across a field without touching him. The council took all this the way the council took everything: as a problem of statecraft, to be weighed, filed, and mastered. Not as a doom. There was no dread in that room — only the ordinary confidence of the most powerful men in the world, examining an oddity on the frontier. At the head of it, on his low seat, was Moctezuma. He had been elected to the mat sixteen years before by the high lords, from among all the royal kin, and they had passed over the pure war-hawks — his own younger brother among them — and chosen him, because he was the surest hand they had: a proven war-commander who was also a high priest, austere, fastidious, a reformer who had tightened the whole apparatus of the state around himself until even great lords came before him barefoot with their eyes on the floor. He had been tracking these towers for two years. He had run scouts, taken reports, sent embassies down to the coast to test the strangers' nature the way you test the weight of a strange coin. He said little, and his court took the little-saying for wisdom, and Chimalli — who revered him as the axis the world turned on — was beginning, this season, to fear it might be something else. And then the man Chimalli followed rose to speak, and the room changed temperature. Cuitláhuac, the lord of Iztapalapa, was Moctezuma's own brother — the hawk the electors had not chosen — and where the tlatoani was stillness, the brother was edge. He did not touch the painted books. He put one hard finger on the drawing of the thunder-tube and left it there.
Bram: CUITLÁHUAC: We do not weigh these, brothers. We have been weighing them for two years, and in two years they have come three times, and each time nearer, and each time we have answered them with gifts. I have heard the reports read out like a merchant's inventory — so many boats, so many beasts, so many of the thunder-tubes. Good. Then we know their number, and their number is small. A thing you cannot name is a thing you kill before it names you. Give me the coast levies. Let me take these towers on the water before their feet ever dry on our shore, while they are few and sick and far from whatever bore them, and by the next feast this council will be examining their skulls on the rack and wondering why we ever painted them a picture. Every day we study them is a day we teach them the road to this door.
Narrator: It was the whole of Chimalli's own heart, said better than he could have said it, by the one man in the world he would follow off a cliff. He felt it go through the younger lords like a war-drum; he felt his own hand tighten on the club he was not permitted to raise in that room. This was a warrior speaking sense to a court that had grown too subtle for its own survival — strike now, mourn later, at leisure. And he watched Moctezuma receive it, and he watched, with a slow cold dawning he would not name for months yet, exactly how the god-on-earth answered a spear. Before the tlatoani answered, he had the chief of the coast-watchers brought forward, a lean man burned by the sea-glare, and made him tell it again, slowly, so the whole council heard the thing without the softening of a second mouth. The man had stood on a dune, he said, and watched the towers come to anchor, and watched small boats go between them and the shore, and watched the pale men wade in the shallows in their fish-scale metal, and — this was the part his voice caught on — watched one of them mount the great deer and ride it up the beach at a run, man and beast one creature, throwing sand, and the coast people had fallen on their faces because a thing that is a man from the waist up and a monster below is a thing out of the old stories. He had counted the towers, and the count was small. He had counted the men, as best he could, and the count was small. And Cuitláhuac struck the mat with the flat of his hand at that, because small was the whole of his argument, and the coast-watcher flinched as if the blow had been for him. He did not argue. That was the terrible, admirable thing. He let the brother finish, and he let the coast-watcher finish, and he let the fire of it hang in the smoke, and he let the silence come after it — a long, patient, sovereign silence that his whole life had taught the room to read as depth. And when the silence had done its work, when the young lords' certainty had cooled a degree in it, he spoke, and what he said was measured, and pious, and — to a man who was not desperate — wise. He said that an irreversible act on incomplete signs was not courage but impiety; that these strangers were a thing without precedent, and precedent was the very floor the world was read from, so the reading must be finished before the striking began; that the empire had never in living memory been out-thought, and would not begin by throwing its spear blind at a shadow it had not yet weighed; that they would watch, and host, and learn, and then decide — at leisure, from strength, as masters do. He said control was surer than war. And the lords bowed their heads to it, because it had always, every time, been true. And then he did the thing that was the true shape of him, the thing the legend of the trembling omen-struck emperor could never afterward account for. He did not do nothing. He gave orders — precise, patient, formidable orders, a whole apparatus set in motion. Embassies were to go down to the coast, bearing gifts chosen with care: worked gold and featherwork and fine cloth, offered not as tribute and not as fear but as a test — to see what the strangers reached for first, and how much, and how they behaved when a thing was set in front of them, because a man's nature comes out in what he covets. Watchers were to be posted along every road up from the sea, and runners kept fresh at every stage, so that the tlatoani in his palace would know a thing that happened on the coast within a day of its happening. Painters were to go with the embassies and bring back the strangers' faces, their beasts, their thunder-tubes, drawn true. It was not a trance. It was an intelligence operation, run by the most powerful man in the world, exactly as he had run every problem of his reign — and it was, Chimalli would come to understand far too late, the precisely wrong tool, applied with genius, to the one problem in the world that could not be studied at leisure, because it was already moving. Chimalli backed the hawk, in the careful ceremonial words the council permitted a made man, and knew as he said them that they would change nothing.
Chimalli: Great lord. I am a made man; I know what it is to meet a thing you have no rank for. But the water, the hill — the city itself — was built by men who struck when striking was possible, and mourned, later, at leisure. I would rather mourn a thing I killed too soon than bury a city I studied too long.
Narrator: And Moctezuma turned his unreadable face to him, and inclined his head the exact courteous degree a great lord grants a useful soldier, and said nothing anyone could act on. The council moved to other business. Nothing was decided, which was itself the decision — and it was, seen from inside his frame, not cowardice at all, but the pious prudence his whole office demanded. It was the surest mind in the world, meeting the first problem in its life that its sureness could not dissolve, and reaching, calmly, for the tool that had never failed. Afterward, in the corridor, Cuitláhuac gripped Chimalli's forearm once, hard, the way soldiers do, and neither of them said the thing they both knew, which was that they had just watched the door of the world left standing open by a man too great to believe it could be walked through.
Bram: CUITLÁHUAC: He is not wrong about anything he can see, my brother. That is the trouble with him. He is only wrong about the one thing none of us can see yet. Keep your division ready. Ready and quiet. A day may come when the order to strike arrives too late to be legal, and we will have to decide, you and I, whether the city is worth more than our obedience.
Narrator: Afterward, crossing the palace in the last light, Chimalli passed through the tlatoani's own world of curated marvels, and let it work on him the way it was built to. There was an aviary of ten rooms, loud and bright with the birds of every province the empire touched — quetzals with their green fire, parrots, herons, a whole conquered continent rendered as colour and song. There was a garden inside the walls, and fountains, and rooms whose walls were worked featherwork finer than paint. And beyond it, in the dusk, the menagerie — the jaguars and the wolves and the coiled snakes that the strangers, when they came, would call an infernal noise: a low roaring and howling and hissing under the pretty chatter of the birds, fed, they said, on five hundred turkeys a day, the empire's other face kept in cages a wall away from its flowers. This was the man himself, laid out as architecture. Moctezuma bathed twice a day, and never wore a garment twice in four days, and dined off thirty dishes behind a screen so that no man might watch the god eat, and drank his chocolate frothed in a cup of gold, and had built, out of tribute and will, the most beautiful court on the earth, and truly, helplessly loved beautiful things — that much even Chimalli could see, and it was true, whatever else was true. And Chimalli stood a moment between the bright birds and the roaring dark, and could not put down the small cold thought that had come to him in the council and would not leave: that the man who had made all this, the surest hand they had, was a collector — a keeper of marvels, a weigher and a sorter and a cataloguer of the world's strange things — and that he was meeting the strangers exactly as a collector meets a specimen. Bring it in. House it. Study it at close range. Learn its nature at leisure, behind the screen, in the aviary of the mind. It had never once failed him. Chimalli held to that, the way a man holds to a rope over water. It had never once failed. In a further room, screened from the common air, the tribute of a hundred conquered towns lay sorted and counted as it came in — the loads of cotton and cacao and dried chile, the bins of gold-dust measured in quills, the bales of quetzal feathers, the war-costumes, the paper, the salt, the whole weight of an empire flowing in along the roads on human backs and being written down, bale by bale, in the painted books. This too was the man. He did not hoard it like a miser; he knew it, catalogued it, mastered it — the surest hand they had, holding the whole world in his ledgers. And it came to Chimalli, standing there, that a man who had spent his life bringing the world in and setting it in rooms and learning its nature at leisure would meet a new thing by doing exactly that — bring it in, house it, learn it — and that this had never once failed him, and that Chimalli had no argument against a lifetime of never once failing, only the cold small animal certainty in his gut that this time the thing they were bringing in would not stay in its room.
Chimalli: He is the flute the god plays. He has been right about everything. — Let him be right about this. Let the thing be a bird, and not a fire.
Narrator: On the mainland, days later, on a strip of hot pale sand at what the maps — such as they were — called the edge of the world, Beltrán de Coria set his two feet on solid ground and had to sit down, because the land would not stop moving like the deck. They had run the boats in and made a camp, and Father Olmedo rang his little hand-bell for the Mass out over the surf as if God could be summoned to a beach He had plainly never visited, and Aguilar knelt in the front rank of it and wept again, quietly, at a Mass he had not heard in eight years. And when the Mass was done a notary stood up on a chest and read out, to the empty green wall of the jungle, a document in Castilian — the requerimiento, the law required it — informing the trees and the birds and whatever unseen people stood behind them that there was one God and one Pope and one King of Castile, and that they were now the King's subjects, and that if they submitted at once all would be well, and that if they did not, whatever befell them thereafter would be their own fault and not Spain's. Not one soul who could have understood a word of it was within a league. The men listened bare-headed, and some of them meant it, and then they put their helmets back on and saw to the horses, the legal part of the day's work done. Beltrán, who missed very little, noticed that the reading came before anyone had been offered a thing to submit to, and filed it, the way he filed everything, for the fireside thirty years off. And the coast went up green behind them into a heat and a wetness and a wall of trees loud with birds Beltrán had no names for, flowers the size of a man's face, a smell of rot and blossom together so thick you could lean on it. They brought the horses down into the shallows to swim the salt off, sixteen of them, and the horses stood in the surf shining, and Beltrán thought of what those horses would look like to a man who had never in his life imagined such a thing as a horse. They brought down the war-dogs, big as calves. They fired one arquebus at a tree, once, to hear it, and the birds went up off the whole coast in a screaming cloud, and Beltrán understood that the horse and the dog and the gun were not weapons only — they were a sentence, a thing you said to a people to see the whites of their eyes, and that the captain knew it, and would use it. And here is where the running mouth of Beltrán de Coria, which had a joke for the storm and a joke for the drowning and a joke for his own funeral, stopped. Because he stood on that alien shore and understood that whatever this was, it was not the Indies of the tavern stories, the gold for the taking. This was a place. It had been here, being itself, being enormous and strange and complete, since long before Coria, and it did not need him, and it did not know he had come, and it went back green and steaming as far as a man could see or dream of seeing, and he — Beltrán, third son, one dry shirt — was going to walk into the middle of it. He crossed himself, slowly this time, and for once could not have said whether it was fear, or prayer, or simple awe. He said nothing. It was the first time on the whole voyage he had had nothing to say — and somewhere he could not yet point to, a year and a whole world's turning away, there was a city on a lake that would one day take his voice for good. At home, at the end of the feast-day, in the one room in the world where he was not a warrior, Chimalli sat and watched his wife make a pot, and let the day be small. Xóchitl was a potter's daughter, and he had married her for love against the mild disapproval of his new rank, and her hands on the clay were the thing he watched when he needed to remember what all the killing was for. She did not ask him about the council. She never asked him about the council; she read it off his shoulders and let the silence do its work, which was one of the several thousand reasons he had married her. The boy's mat was empty across the room. The house was quieter by one clever child, and would be quieter now for years.
