The Gift of the Tongue

Narrador: On the flat ground behind the town — a place called Centla, on the hot coast of a country no map of Spain had a name for — a soldier named Beltrán de Coria stood in the second rank of a square that was getting smaller, and did the thing he did when he was afraid, which was to count. He counted the arrows standing in the shields around him, and gave it up. He counted the paces to the treeline where the crossbowmen had been and were not, and it was too far. He counted the enemy and could not — there was no counting it — and understood, the way a man understands weather, that there were more Chontal Maya on that field than there were breaths left in the afternoon to kill them with. They had come for peace three days back and been given war, and now the whole coast had turned out to give it to them properly: feathered captains screaming from the flanks, the shriek of the drilled sling-stone that put a hole in the air before it put one in a man, and the plain arithmetic of it closing in. The powder was wet or spent. The captain-general was gone off somewhere in the cotton with the few horse and had been a long time gone. The square held because a square is the last thing frightened men have, and Beltrán held his corner of it because the man on his left was holding his, and that was the whole of the theology left on that field. He got half the Ave out and lost it and started again, and could not, for the life of him, find the rest. And then a horse came out of the cotton at the enemy's unguarded back — one horse, ahead of all the others, a grey horse, and Beltrán would swear on his mother's grave to the end of his days that it was a grey horse and that no man in the company owned a grey. The rider on it was armoured in something that took the sun and threw it back, and where it went the host came apart. Beltrán saw it clear across the whole field, in the one clean gap the dust left him: a rider on a grey horse going through a nation like a scythe through standing barley, and above the screaming and the drums a single high brazen note, a trumpet-call with no trumpeter under it — and the word went up out of five hundred Spanish throats at once, the way a fire jumps a firebreak, before any man decided to say it. Santiago. Saint James. The warrior of Spain, the Moor-killer, who had ridden for Christians against the odds since before there was a Spain to ride for — Santiago, come down onto a cotton-field at the end of the world to fight for the men who called his name. What had been a host became a running. There is no other way to tell it. The captains screamed and were not heard; the drums lost the beat; the whole vast certain crowd of them came apart between one breath and the next and poured off the field toward the trees, and the square that had been dying stood up out of its own grave and let them go, because there was no strength left in it to do the other thing. Beltrán stood in the sudden roaring quiet with an arrow through the leather of his sleeve and his heart going like a smith's hammer, and he was weeping and did not know it, and he was shouting the name and did not know that either, and he watched a whole nation change its mind about the world in the time it takes to cross a yard. When he could think again he thought — because he was a man who thought in coin — a saint. A saint just fought for us. God keep me, what is a country worth where God Himself sends down a saint to break the door of it. And under that, cooler, the soldier's sum: in the morning the town would come in. They always came in, after a day like this — with their lords bowing and their hands open, bringing food, and gold if they had it, and cloth, and, because it was the custom of this coast, women, to grind the maize and warm the beds and seal the peace with their bodies, handed over the way you hand over a sack of cacao or a turkey in a cage. Beltrán de Coria, who counted everything, stood on the won field and had no way in the world of counting the one gift that was coming — that somewhere in that beaten town, this very night, a young woman with three whole languages folded up quiet inside her was being readied to walk out to the strangers in the morning with nineteen others — and that of everything on this whole coast, the gold and the horses and the guns and the grey-horsed saint himself, she was the thing that would change the most, and cost the most, and be reckoned the least.
Narrator: This is Chronicles — history, lived from the inside: not the dates and the kings, but the mornings, the markets, the fear and the wonder; other lives, other worlds, felt from within. This season: Flower and Song — Tenochtitlan, on the eve of everything. Episode Two: The Gift of the Tongue. That's a conch — blown from the temple to mark the watches over the greatest city in the Americas, a quarter of a million souls on their lake-island, sure the world was turning as it should. Last time, the strangers stood off the eastern sea. Tonight they come ashore for good, and win a battle a saint rides into — and are handed, on a beach, the one thing without which they cannot understand a single word of the world they mean to take: a voice. Everyone you follow tonight is invented, woven from the real record — all but one, and you are about to meet her. The battle on the sand, the gift of the women, the boats on the beach — all real, and researched. Because the only way to understand a world is to live inside someone there. So — listen. On the sand, the morning after the saint, with a hand-bell ringing the field-Mass somewhere up the beach, the beaten lords of the coast came into the strangers' camp to make their peace, and they brought it in the shapes peace came in. Food first — turkeys, maize-cakes, fruit — because a beaten people feeds the victor to say we are no longer a danger, only a larder. Then a little gold, thin worked pieces, watched out of their hands with a grief they were careful not to show. Then cloth. And then, last, because they were the costliest thing and the coast knew it, twenty women, walked down to the strangers' camp in a line and stood in a row on the beach to be looked at. The lord who gave them made a short grave speech as he did it, of which the strangers understood not one word and did not need to: take these, and let there be no more war between us. A woman, on this coast, was how you said that. A woman was the seal you pressed into the wax of a peace — and one of the twenty knew it better than the lord who gave her, because she had been a seal pressed into other men's peace twice before, and she was still a girl. She was a Nahua girl of about nineteen, straight-backed in a plain slave's huipil, and while the other nineteen looked at the sand, or at the sea, or at the terrible pale men and their terrible animals, she looked at the room. There was no room; there was a beach. She looked at it the way there is always a room. She found the one still man in it — the pale one with the dark beard who did not shout, around whom all the shouting arranged itself — and she marked him, and understood the shape of the whole morning before a single word of it had been said to her, which no word would be. She had done this in slave-markets and in great men's courtyards since before she had breasts. You found the still one. Everything else was noise. And then she heard a thing that stopped the breath in her without moving a muscle of her face. Two tongues were going back and forth across the sand — the Maya of this coast, which she had learned on the slave-trail with a rope on her neck; and under it, low and bitter, one beaten lord to another, unheard by any of the pale men because to them it was only more noise — the Nahuatl of her childhood. Not the market Nahuatl of the trade-roads. The high tongue. The courtly, reverential speech of rank, tecpillahtolli, the speech of lords — the one her father's people spoke, the one she had been born to and sold out of, come to find her on a foreign beach in a defeated man's complaint. She stood in it the way a woman stands in the doorway of a house that has thrown her out, and did not turn her head. She had learned, a long way back, that the things inside her mouth were the one property no owner had ever managed to take, and that the way you kept them was to let nothing of them reach your face. So her face stayed a slave's face, blank and downcast at the right moments, while behind it she stood in her mother's language and did not fall down. Her hand went once, quiet, to the inside of her own wrist — to the place where, on the trail, a rope had been — and came away. That was all. Nobody on that beach could have told you a single thing had happened. Nobody ever had. The hand-bell rang again, nearer, and they were walked up the beach toward it, to a man in a grey habit — a friar, though she had no word yet for what that was — who stood them before a rough wooden cross driven into the sand and spoke over them in a fourth tongue none of them owned and touched each on the head with water. It was a naming; she understood that much, the way a child is named, because the strangers plainly could not go on calling twenty women the women and so were fixing names to them the way you brand a herd, to tell one from the next. When the friar's wet thumb came to her he said a word, and the pale men said it back, and it would be years before she learned it was the name of the sea — Marina — and by then it would be hers the way a scar is yours, not chosen and not given back. She bowed her head under the water at what seemed the right moment, and thought, in the language they could not hear: let them call me what keeps me. I have been called dead. This is better than that. In the afternoon the women were divided, and she watched it done the way she watched everything, and learned the captains off it faster than the captains learned each other: which men the pale still one gave the best of the twenty to, and in what order, and how a woman's worth was being read off her face and her hands and the straightness of her back by men who could not ask her a single question about herself. She was given to one of the better ones — a young captain, well-dressed, second in the still man's regard, a man they called Puertocarrero — and she understood the giving completely. She was a courtesy between powerful men, a thing the still one could bestow to bind a follower closer, and she had been exactly this kind of thing, in exactly this kind of exchange, twice before she was grown. There was no part of it that surprised her. That was not at all the same as there being no part of it that cost. She had learned the reading of a man young, the way another girl might have learned a loom. You read the one you are given to the way you read weather over water, because the weather is going to do what it will and the only question is whether you have watched it closely enough to know when to reef. This one was vain of his second place and would want a woman who made him feel first — and that she could give cheaply, a straightness of the back, an attention, and it would buy a measure of not-cruelty in return, which on this coast was a real coin. She had no word, and her whole world had no word, for the thing the strangers' priests seemed to half-mean when they spoke of the sins of the flesh as a matter of a woman's yes. Where she was from, a woman of rank married where her lords sent her and a woman of no rank went where she was sent, and no one had ever shown any of them the border of a country of choosing. So she did not grieve a freedom she had never had a name for. She spent, instead, the one freedom she did have, which lived entirely on the inside: the deciding of what it would be permitted to mean. That night she did what she had taught herself to do a long time ago, on the trail, the first time, when she was too young to have any counsel but her own: she went somewhere behind her own eyes and let the rest be done to the body, which she had decided very young was a thing she had and used, and not a thing she was. She did not weep, because weeping was a coin and she spent no coin she did not have to. She did not pretend, either — pretending was a labour, and it gave a man a thing to believe he had earned, and she gave nothing she was not made to give. She lay in the dark afterward and did the only work that was truly hers, which was the reckoning: this one is not cruel, which is worth something; he is proud, and being needed flatters him, which is worth more, and can be used; and he belongs to the still one and does as the still one says — so it is the still one, in the end, who owns the giving of me and the taking-back, and it is the still one I must become necessary to, or I am one of twenty, and the other nineteen are already being forgotten. She was nineteen years old and drawing the map of the only country she would ever be permitted to conquer, which was the inside of other people's needing, and she drew it in the dark, dry-eyed, and slept. Only once, on the edge of sleep, did a thing move in her that she had no permission for, and she let it move for exactly as long as it took to know it and no longer — that somewhere in the world there might be a way to be wanted that did not end in being given away; kept, not for grinding the maize or warming the bed or sealing a peace, but because you were the one thing that could not be got from anyone else; and that if there were such a way, then her whole life had been the wrong shape, and she could not afford to think that on a beach with nineteen forgotten women sleeping around her. She put her hand to the inside of her wrist, where the rope had been, and took it away, and made herself think instead about the two tongues that had gone back and forth across the sand all day, and the courtly Nahuatl underneath them that not one of the strangers could hear. And somewhere in the thinking — without any triumph in it, only the cold clean click of a lock finding its key — she began to understand that she might be holding, unheard, on a beach, the one thing on this whole coast that these powerful helpless men most needed and could not take.
Narrador: On the beach, a few days on, with the field won and the town come in and a hand-bell ringing the Mass up the sand, and the sun for once not trying to murder anyone in particular, Beltrán de Coria sat in the shade of a beached boat cleaning the sand out of everything he owned and holding forth, because a country this strange required a running account and he had appointed himself to keep it.
Beltran: Hear that, Micer? Fray Olmedo, ringing us in. Good man, the friar. Rings the bell morning and evening, come sun or arrows, and I'll stand for every Mass he says and mean it down to the ground — the more so now. Because I'll tell you a thing, and I'll tell it in one breath, which is more theology than most priests manage in an hour. I came out here to serve God. And I came out here to get rich. And on that field three days back I watched the two of them turn out to be the same errand. You saw it. Don't tell me you didn't see it.
Micer: I saw a grey horse. I saw dust.
Beltran: You saw Santiago. He wants to know, the lad — was it truly the saint. Truly. On a grey horse none of us owns — go and find me the grey horse, Andrés, walk the whole horse-line, I did it myself yesterday, there is no grey horse — armoured like the sun and going through those poor devils like a reaper, and the trumpet over it and no trumpeter under it. Now. De Morla says it was De Morla, on his own horse, and puffs himself up like a pigeon telling it. And I say to De Morla — friend, your horse is a bay, I've mucked it, and you were on your face in the cotton same as me. Some of the men hold it was Saint Peter and not Saint James at all, and there's near been blood over that, which is a very Spanish way to thank heaven for a rescue. But grey horse or bay, James or Peter — a saint came down onto that field, lad. God is in this country with us. And where God goes—
Micer: —the gold is not far behind.
Beltran: —the gold is not far behind! You see? He's had it off me before. That's the whole map, boy. You saw the little the town brought in — a few birds of thin gold, a mask or two, some green stones the lords set more store by than the gold, which tells you a thing I've not worked out yet. That's not the country. That's the doorstep of the country. Somewhere inland there's a great lord these coast-people pay their tribute to, and pay it in fear — you can hear the fear when they even say his name — and where the tribute goes, that's where the gold pools. So we follow the fear uphill. That's the map. You find who everyone on a road is frightened of, and you walk toward him with a saint at your shoulder, and you get rich or you get killed, and either way you've stopped being a third son from Coria that nobody looked at twice.
Narrador: Andrés, who was seventeen and had killed no one and been killed by no one and found both prospects equally hard to credit, wanted to know about the women. The twenty. What became of them. Beltrán's grin went off for a moment, which the young one did not notice and Micer did.
Beltran: Given out. Same as the gold, same as the birds and the cloth — parcelled round the captains to seal the peace. That's the custom of this coast, lad, and it was the custom of a good many coasts before this one, ours included, so wipe that look off your face. One of them went to Puertocarrero. Good-looking, they say, and quiet, and carries herself like she's the one doing the giving. I don't look too hard at that part of the account, if I'm honest. A man can keep a clean set of books on the gold and the fighting. It's the other ledger I've learned to hold the lamp away from, or I'd not sleep — and a soldier who doesn't sleep is a soldier who dies. Both, Micer. It's always both. God and gold, the saint and the slave-women in one morning, and no seam in it anywhere that I can find. And the day a man out here tells you it's only the one — keep your hand on your purse and your soul, because he's about to relieve you of whichever one he isn't watching.
Narrator: On the dunes at San Juan de Ulúa, some weeks north up the coast, with the hand-bell of the field-Mass just ringing its last up the beach, Marina stood where a gift-woman stands — back and to the side, near enough to be useful and far enough to be furniture — and watched the still man meet the messenger of the greatest lord in the world, and watched the meeting very nearly break on the one thing not one of them had thought about: how the words would get across. This was the chain the strangers had, and it was a poor one. The still man — Cortés, she had his name now — spoke his own Castilian, and no word else. Beside him stood a gaunt, sun-blackened man in half-Spanish rags, a priest the company had found living among the Maya down the coast, cast up from a shipwreck and held a slave eight years: Aguilar, they called him, and his one gift was that eight years of bondage had left him fluent in the Maya of the Yucatán. So Cortés spoke to Aguilar in Castilian, and Aguilar turned it into Maya, and — down on the sand — the great lord's steward stood in his cotton and his gold and his tall green quetzal plumes and answered in the tongue of his master, which was Nahuatl. And Aguilar, who had no Nahuatl at all, stood with his mouth open like a man handed a letter in a language he cannot read and told the fate of nations hangs on his getting it right by looking at it.
Teudile: The one who is the Speaker, the heart of the world, the lord of the Mexica, sends his breath and his word to the lords who have come out of the eastern water. He sends these — — that you may know the greatness of the house you have come to. And he asks, with all courtesy, who you are, and what it is you seek, and whether, being now honoured, you will go home across the water content.
Narrator: It was a lord's speech, whole and courteous and edged, and Aguilar heard the shape of it and not one word of the meaning, and said so, low and wretched, into Cortés's ear. And Cortés — who kept a soft answer ready and dressed for every occasion — found he had a reply and no road to send it down, and the beautiful gifts lay on the sand between the two lords like a question no one in the world could ask. The steward waited. A lord does not repeat himself; he waits, and the waiting cools, and the painters had stopped their brushes. And so the great meeting stalled, on a beach, over a disk of gold, for want of a single mouth. And Marina, standing where the furniture stands, heard the whole shape of it at once — heard a great lord's man speaking her mother's tongue to a pale man's priest who could not hear it; heard the chain lying broken on the sand with its two ends a single mouth apart; and heard, under all of it, the cold clean click she had heard in the dark three weeks before. The one thing on this coast they most need, and cannot take, and cannot even find — and it is in my mouth. She looked once at the gold disk of the sun lying on the mat, and understood that it was not the gift. She was the gift. They simply did not know it yet. She could have let it break. She thought about it — she always thought about it, in the half-beat before she spoke, the space where she decided how much of the truth to carry — and in that half-beat she weighed a broken meeting against a mended one and knew, cold, that a mended chain running through her was worth more to her than any lord's ruined morning. So she stepped half a pace out of where the furniture stands, and she spoke.
Malintzin: The one who sent this man is the greatest lord of the inland country, and these are his gifts. He asks who your captain is, and what he seeks, and whether he will go home now that he has been honoured. Tell your captain the last question is the only one the lord truly asked. The rest was courtesy.
Narrator: She said it plainly and low — the steward's high courtly Nahuatl caught whole and set down in Aguilar's coarse coast-Maya without ornament and without a single error — and with that one small unasked-for thing at the end, the reading of the lord under the courtesy, which was not translation, and which no one but she would ever know she had put there. Aguilar's head came round to her like a man hearing a door open in a wall he had thought was solid. She did not look at him in triumph; triumph was a coin, and she was buying something far larger than the pleasure of a look. She looked at Cortés. And she gave him his meeting back — the great lord's greeting into Maya for the priest, the priest's Maya into Castilian for the captain, and the captain's soft answer back the whole length of the chain the other way, smooth now, closed, running — and running, every word of it, through the one mouth on that dune that held both of its ends. She rendered the whole of it and kept a servant's face, and only she in all the world felt the thing that had turned over, which was everything. The still man was looking at her now — not the way a man looks at a gift-woman, but the way a man looks at a thing he has just understood he cannot do without and does not yet know the price of. And she knew, with the clean dry certainty that was the nearest thing to joy her life had left her, that being necessary was a kind of power, and the only kind she would ever be given. She had climbed, in an afternoon, from one of twenty to the one they could not replace. She had also just made herself the most valuable thing to own on the entire coast — and she had watched, the same afternoon, how fast a man who had been the chain became a man no one had further use for. She lay awake a while with both of those, and did not decide they were only the one good thing.
Narrador: On the dune at San Juan de Ulúa, when the meeting was done and the words had all got safely across at last, Beltrán de Coria pushed in with the rest of the company to see what a god-emperor sends to strangers he would like to be rid of — and stopped dead, and forgot, for a while, to keep his account. Because the steward's men were unrolling the gifts on the mats, and Beltrán de Coria, third son of Coria, had never in his life seen wealth, and now he was looking at it. There was a disk of gold as broad as a cartwheel, worked all over with beasts and signs, and it was the sun — you did not need the tongue-woman to tell you it was the sun, it was the sun, hammered flat and laid on the sand of a beach at the end of the world. Beside it a disk of silver as big, and that was the moon. There was gold worked into the shapes of ducks and dogs and fish, so fine the men passed it hand to hand and swore no goldsmith in Seville could match it. There was a headdress of long green feathers that moved like water when the wind took it. And Beltrán stood in the press of hard unwashed men gone suddenly silent as churchgoers, and felt the thing he had felt on the causeway of his own future without knowing it yet — plain open wonder, the helpless kind, at a people who could do this — and then, because he was who he was, he felt the wonder turn over in his chest into its twin, and heard himself do the sum before he could stop it: if this is what the man sends to make us leave, God and all His saints, what is he sitting on inland that he'd send this to keep us off it. And the still man played his own hand back. He had the horses run along the wet sand where the ground was hard, so the beasts came at a gallop and wheeled, and Beltrán watched the steward's painters set it down quick on their bark-cloth — man and horse as one animal, the way the Maya had seen it at Centla. And then, for the finish, the captain had them load one of the great guns — a lombard — and fire it out over the bay at nothing, and the cannon went off with a concussion that Beltrán felt come up through the wet sand into his own back teeth, and the ball tore a white road across the water, and the noise of it rolled and came back off the dunes. The envoys did not run — they were a great lord's men, and they held — but Beltrán, who was learning to read this coast off the faces of the people being frightened on it, saw the youngest of the painters' hands go still on his brush for a moment before it started again, faster, and thought: there. That's what he'll carry inland. Not the gold — the fire. The lord asked would we go home, and the captain has just answered him in the one language a great lord truly understands, which is thunder. Two men, Beltrán thought, showing each other exactly as much of the hand as they wanted seen, across a beach, through the mouth of a slave-woman neither of them could do without — and every man in the company, himself included, no more than a card being turned face-up on the mat.
Narrator: In the shore camp, when the steward had gone back inland with his painted cloths and the evening had loosened everything, the gaunt priest Aguilar came and sat near Marina — not too near; a careful man — and for a while neither of them said anything, which she respected. He had lost something on the dune that afternoon and they both knew it. She had been furniture; now she was the chain. And he, who had been the chain, was on his way to becoming furniture, and had come to sit beside the woman who had done it to him — which took either a large soul or a very tired one, and she did not yet know which.
Aguilar: You have the high tongue. The lords' tongue. I heard it. You were not born to that on a slave-trail.
Malintzin: No.
Aguilar: I was eight years among the Maya. Cast up on their shore off a wrecked ship, and taken, and kept. Eight years I dug another man's field and carried another man's water, and I learned their tongue the way you learn a thing you cannot put down — with your whole life, because it was the only country I had left. And when the captain's men came and said I was ransomed, free, a Christian among Christians again — — I'll tell you a shameful thing, sister. I had to think about it. For the length of one breath I had to think about whether I'd go. Because a bondage you have learned all the way to the bottom of is still a place. And freedom was a boat full of strangers.
Narrator: She was quiet a while, turning his eight years over against her own life, and finding them, for all his suffering, the easier arithmetic. He had been taken by strangers, by the sea, by bad luck; there was no one he had to un-love to make sense of it. She put her hand to the inside of her wrist and took it away.
Malintzin: I was not taken by the sea. My father was a lord. He died when I was small, and my mother married another young lord and bore him a son, and the son would one day want what would have been mine. So one night men came into my father's house and carried me out into the dark — and my mother let them, and put it about the town that I had sickened and died, so that no one would ever look for the girl who was in the way. I was nine. I learned two things that night that have kept me alive since, and they are the only two things I know for certain. That belonging can be taken back by the very ones who gave it. And that the inside of your own mouth is the one place no one can carry you out of in the dark.
Aguilar: And now the whole camp will belong to your mouth.
Malintzin: Now the whole camp will need my mouth. You of all men know they are not the same thing. But it is closer to safe than nineteen women sleeping on a beach, and I did not get to choose from a longer list.
Narrator: He gave her the shell he had been turning — a small ordinary thing, a coast-shell, worth nothing — and she took it, because she understood the grammar of it: it was not payment and not courtship, it was one survivor telling another I see what you are and I do not resent it, which was a sentence no one had said to her in a very long time and which she had not known she was hungry to hear until she heard it. She closed her hand on the shell. For as long as it took the light to go off the water she let herself sit beside a man who required nothing of her and be, for once, not the chain and not the gift and not the number — only a woman on a beach at evening with a shell in her hand. And then the light went, and she put the shell away inside her huipil where the salt could not reach it, and stood, and went back to being the most necessary object in the camp, because the guard was the only home she had, and she did not sleep well outside it. The captain she had been given to, Puertocarrero, was chosen to carry the strangers' treasure and their letters back across the sea to their king — a great honour, and a long absence, and it left the question of whose she was lying open on the sand again like a thing dropped. She had known it would. She had been watching it come the way she watched all things come toward her, and she knew before Cortés knew that he would settle it himself, because the one mouth his whole enterprise now depended on was not a thing a careful man lent to a departing follower. He came to her himself, which she marked. He did not have her brought; he came, in the evening, and sat, and had Aguilar wait outside — which meant he wished to try whether the two of them could do without the old chain now, in the little Castilian she had been gathering off the camp like a woman gleaning a field behind the reapers. She let him find that they nearly could — that she had more of his tongue already than she had let any of them see — and watched the discovery land on him, and be weighed, and put away.
Cortes: They tell me you were a lord's daughter. Before. I was a lord's son with no money, which in my country is nearly the same as being no one. I know the shape of a person the world has handed the wrong portion. I have found it makes them see clearly. You see clearly, Marina. I have need of that more than of almost anything I own.
Narrator: She heard it whole, the way she heard everything whole: that it was true, and that it was a leash, and that the truth was exactly what made the leash hold. He did mean that she saw clearly and that he valued it — she could hear the want in it, real, a great man leaning on a slave's mind and letting her watch him do it, which was itself a kind of gift, and a dangerous one. And he also meant that she was a thing he owned and was choosing to keep for its use, and that the seeing and the owning were, in him, one act — the way the still man did everything as one act, with no seam anywhere a knife could find. She sat inside the offer and did the reckoning, and the reckoning came out the way it had on the beach the first night, only larger: this is the still one. This is the owner of the giving and the taking-back. To be necessary to him is the whole of my safety and the whole of my danger, and they are the same thing, and I will not be dealt a better hand than this in the life that is left to me, and I know exactly what it is worth and exactly what it can be turned into in an hour.
Malintzin: Then I will see clearly for you, señor. You will find I am better at it than a chain of three men. And cheaper. And I do not go home to Spain.
Narrator: He almost smiled — she saw it almost happen and not happen, which told her more about him than a whole afternoon of speeches — and it was done. From that evening she was Cortés's: his tongue, his eyes, his reader of rooms, the mouth two empires would have to borrow to speak to each other at all, kept at the side of the one man whose keeping meant she would not be handed on when convenient like the nineteen. She lay awake after, dry-eyed as always, and let herself hold the whole of it in her two hands at once, because she was the only person alive who could feel both halves and she owed it to herself not to lie. This was the most power she had ever had, and it was real, and she had built it herself out of the one thing they could not take. And she owned nothing — not even the name they had poured over her head on the sand — and the power was a thing she was permitted for exactly as long as she was needed, and the needing was a rope, a better rope, a rope she had chosen and half-woven herself. But she put her hand to her wrist in the dark, where the first rope had been, and did not, this time, take it away so quickly, because there was no lie she could tell herself in the dark that would make the two ropes feel entirely different.
Narrador: On the shore below Villa Rica, a ship's bell tolled once across the water — the last that fleet would ever ring — and on a bright ordinary morning Beltrán de Coria stood in the wet sand with a good part of the company and watched the whole fleet burn. Not in a battle. By order. The word had gone round that the ships were rotten — worm-eaten, unseaworthy, a danger to good men, better gone than trusted — and every soul on that beach who could count past ten knew the truth under the word was a different truth: that a handful of the men wanted to steal a hull and run back to Cuba and the governor, and that this was the captain-general's answer to them, and to everyone. There would be no hulls to steal. There would be no hulls at all. So they burned them. They took fire down to the waterline on a windless morning and put it to the tar and the old dry timber, and the ships that had carried them across the whole width of the world caught one after another and stood up in flame on the flat water, and the smoke went straight up into a sky with no wind in it to carry it away, so that the whole company stood in the smell of its own road home burning. Beltrán watched the masts go — one, and then another leaning into the first, and then the third — and felt a thing in his stomach he had no joke ready for, which was rare with him. He had walked up a plank once, of his own two feet, with dry land on the one end of it and the whole heaving unknown on the other, and it had frightened him witless, and he had done it anyway, because a plank runs both ways and a man tells himself he can always walk back down it. Now the planks were burning. He stood in the wet sand and watched the last of the sea-road turn to smoke, and understood, all the way down, the size of what the captain had just done: he had not beaten the faction that wanted to run. He had abolished running. He had taken the whole company's fear of dying in this country and he had set it on fire in front of them, so that from this morning there was only one direction a frightened man could point his feet. He did the sum standing there, because he always did the sum. No ships: no back. No back: the only road that ends anywhere but a grave runs inland, uphill, toward the great lord and the pooled gold and the fear that everyone on this coast carried like a stone in the shoe. And the strangers were not going up that road alone, which was the one warm thing in a cold, smoking morning — because up the coast, a fat old lord in a town called Cempoala had already come out to meet them with his hatred ready-made, hating the great inland lord and his tribute-collectors far worse than he feared the pale men and their animals, and offering, in that hatred, the first of what Beltrán suspected would be many: local men, in numbers, who wanted the great lord broken for their own old reasons and did not much care whose horses did the breaking. We follow the fear uphill, he had told the young one, back when it was a joke. It was not a joke on this beach, in the smell of the burning. He crossed himself, once, and turned his back on the sea for good — because there was nothing behind him now but ash on the water — and went to find out what a man does in a country he can never leave.
Narrator: In the stone town of Cempoala a Spanish hand-bell was ringing the Mass, oddly, out among the strangers' tents; and in the court of a lord so vast he had to be helped to his feet, Marina stood at the still man's side and did the work that was now hers, and found in it a thing she had not expected to find anywhere ever again, which was pleasure. The fat lord poured out his grievance, and it was an old one, and deep. Twice a year, he said, the great inland lord sent his tribute-collectors — the calpixque, the men who came to gather what a conquered town owed its master — down through his country, and they took the cloth and the maize and, worse, the young men and the young women, and they were so certain of the power behind them that they walked unarmed through towns that hated them and were obeyed anyway. That was the thing the fat lord could not swallow — not the theft, but the ease of it — and his fury at it was old and deep and exactly the thing Cortés had been fishing the whole coast to catch.
Cortes: Tell the lord I have heard of this great inland king, and of his collectors. Tell him I serve a king greater still, across the water, who does not love to hear of towns bled twice a year by a tyrant. And tell him a man who truly feared such a king would perhaps not dare to seize his collectors and hold them. I only observe it. I ask for nothing.
Narrator: She carried it across, and heard, in the still man's careful I ask for nothing, the whole of what he was asking. He was handing the fat lord a knife and calling it an observation. And the fat lord took it.
Cacique: Seize them? You would stand with me — you, and your animals, and your fire — if I laid hands on the collectors of the lord of the world? Do you know what it is, stranger, to hand your daughters up the road twice a year to men who do not even trouble to draw a blade — because the blade is a whole city away, and does not need to be here to cut? Give me your word your beasts and your thunder stand between me and his anger, and I will have his collectors in irons before the sun is down, and every town on this coast that has swallowed the same shame will hear of it by the next.
Narrator: And she carried it across — the fat lord's Nahuatl into Maya for Aguilar, the Maya into Castilian for Cortés, and the still man's soft answers back the other way — and somewhere in the carrying she stopped merely carrying. She heard the fat lord's grievance and the still man's hunger lock together like the two halves of a broken pot, and she understood, before either of them fully did, that this was the shape of the whole thing to come: that the great inland lord was hated up and down this land by everyone he taxed, and that a clever stranger with a saint and a handful of horses and no way home could ride that hatred all the way to the top of the fear — and that the ride would begin here, in this court, in this hour, through her mouth. She felt it turn. She felt the whole future of it hinge, for one breath, on the exactness of a single word she chose — and she chose it exactly, and the hinge swung, and the fat lord and the pale captain leaned toward each other across her voice like two men who had just found a friend — and she felt, standing between them, the thing her whole life had almost entirely denied her: the plain, clean, private joy of being very, very good at the one thing that was hers. There was even, in it, a kind of comedy that only she could taste. Somewhere in the middle of it the fat lord let fall a thing that was, in the high Nahuatl, a rolling and courtly and enormously filthy remark about the inland lord's mother; and Aguilar had no vessel in his coast-Maya to carry the half of it; and by the time it reached the still man in Castilian it had become a grave observation about the heavy burdens of empire, and Cortés nodded at it thoughtfully, and touched his medal, and Marina kept her servant's face and enjoyed, entirely alone, the private feast of being the only soul on earth who had heard the joke — the whole joke, and all three of its ruined translations — and could never tell it to a living person. It was a thin pleasure. It was hers. She had learned to live on thin pleasures and be grateful. And she watched, even while she savoured it, the larger and colder thing moving underneath — because she also heard, in the fat lord's fury and the still man's soft hunger meeting through her mouth, the first small sound of a great many towns deciding to break the greatest city in the world; and she knew, better than anyone in that stone court, that she was the hinge they would all swing on, and that a hinge bears the whole weight of the door, and is the first thing thrown away when the house is finished. That same night, in the dark of the same town, when the fat lord had kept his word, Marina stood at the still man's shoulder and helped him tell two lies at once, and understood, while she did it, that she had crossed a line she would not be able to find again in the morning. The fat lord had done exactly what he swore. His men had fallen on the great inland lord's five collectors — the calpixque, fat with certainty, who had walked into Cempoala expecting the usual tribute and the usual terror — and clapped them in wooden collars and thrown them in a cage, and the whole town had come to look at the impossible thing: the master's men, helpless, in irons, and the sky not fallen. The fat lord was drunk on it. And Cortés, who had handed him the knife that afternoon, stood in the lamplight that night and quietly set about making sure the knife could never quite be traced to his hand. He had two of the five collectors brought to him in secret, apart from the others, while the town slept — and he was all gentleness with them, all wounded courtesy, and it was Marina who had to build that courtesy in the high tongue, word by word, knowing every word of it for the lie it was.
Cortes: Tell these lords I am appalled. Tell them I knew nothing of this outrage until it was done, that these coast-people are hot and lawless, and that I — a friend to their great master, whom I have crossed an ocean hoping to honour — have had them loosed from their irons the moment I learned of it, at my own risk, in the night. Tell them to carry my respect to their lord, and my sorrow, and my hope that he will know his friends from his rebels. Say it warmly, Marina. Warmer than I say it.
Narrator: And she said it warmly. Warmer than he said it. She took the still man's cold clean lie and she gave it the breath and the roundness a great lord's men would expect from a message of true respect, and she watched the two collectors' fear turn to a wary, grateful astonishment — freed in the night by the very stranger their master would want to hear about — and she knew, carrying it, that she had just done a new thing. On the beach, and on the dune, she had carried words: she had chosen how much of the truth to bring across, and that had been survival, and hers to be proud of. This was not that. This was building a false face for a man and handing it to his victims and telling them it was true, so that he could hold a knife to the emperor's ribs with one hand and pat his shoulder with the other. She could have carried it flat and let the coldness show through and let the collectors half-see the trick. She did not. She made it warm, because he had asked her to, and because the warmer she made it the more surely she was the one thing his double game could not be run without. When the two men had gone back into the dark toward the coast and their master, still marvelling at the mercy of the stranger who had freed them, she stood a moment in the emptied lamplight and did the reckoning, and did not like all of what it came to. The still man had used her to be, in one night, the Totonacs' champion and the emperor's respectful guest — enemies to each other, friends to him, and each believing the tongue-woman had carried them nothing but truth. It had worked because she had made it work. And she found, turning it over, that she could no longer draw the clean line she had always drawn between the mouth that only carries and the hand that does the thing — because tonight the mouth had done the thing, warmly, and well, and no one living but she would ever know how far past carrying she had gone. She put her hand to the inside of her wrist, where the rope had been, and this time did not take it away at all, but stood holding her own wrist in the dark of a strange lord's courtyard, a long way from the beach and the twenty, and understood that the ledge she had climbed onto was higher than she had let herself see, and that there was, now, a distance under her that had not been there in the morning. At night, off-duty, with the lamp low and the mask down and no room to read and no chain to be, Marina sometimes let herself think about the painters. Teudile's painters, on the dune, with their brushes and their folded bark-paper, setting down the pale men and the thundering animals and the fire-that-kills, to carry the pictures back inland to their master — she had watched them work, quick and exact, and she had wondered, in the idle way a tired mind wonders, whether she was on the cloths. A small figure at the still man's side. A woman, in a slave's huipil, with her mouth open, speaking. She thought she probably was; the painters set down what was true, and by the end of that meeting the true thing was that the words went through her. She turned it over the way you turn a stone to see the wet side. Somewhere inland, in a court she could not picture and had spent her childhood being taught to fear, a lord she would never in her life have been permitted to raise her eyes to was unrolling a cloth and studying the strangers on it — the beasts, the fire, the pale bearded faces — and reckoning them, weighing them, the way she reckoned a captain across a beach. She found she was not afraid of him, which surprised her, and then did not. She had never once experienced the great inland lord as a god, or a father, or a protector. She had experienced him, all her life, as the far weight at the top of the fear — the reason the collectors came, the power that swallowed small places like the one she had been carried out of in the dark. If the strangers meant to break him, that was the strangers' business, and none of hers to mourn. What was hers — the only thing that had ever been hers — was that the breaking, whoever did it and for whatever reason, was going to have to be spoken. And she was the speaking. And so, without knowing the size of it, she had already walked into the greatest house in the world — not in the flesh, not yet, but painted; a small speaking figure on a bark-paper cloth being carried inland that very season, to be unrolled before the lord of a quarter of a million souls, who would study the pale bearded men and the four-legged fire-beasts and the guns, and take his time, and weigh them, and never once trouble to look twice at the small woman at the captain's shoulder with her mouth open. She did not mind that; she had spent her whole life being the thing no one counted, and had learned, in the slave-markets and the great men's rooms, that the uncounted thing is the one no one thinks to guard. She took the little shell out of her huipil — the priest's shell, the survivor's shell — and held it a while in the lamplight, and put it away again, and put the lamp out, and lay in the dark doing the only thing that had ever been entirely hers, which was to keep her own counsel. So leave her there. On a beach at the edge of a world about to end — a lord's daughter sold for dead at nine, a gift among twenty gifts, who in the turning of a single season made herself the one thing five hundred armed strangers and the greatest lord in the Americas could not do without, and did it with nothing, with less than nothing, with the one property no owner had ever managed to carry out of her house in the dark.
