Bram: On the third day of the fighting in the hills of Tlaxcala, Malintzin stood inside a square of exhausted men and learned what these strangers were actually worth when the gods went quiet. She had thought, in the beginning, that they could not be beaten. She had watched the horses at Centla turn a battle in an afternoon, watched the fire-tubes open a hole in a wall of men, watched the coast lords weep and hand over gold and women, and she had made her cold private wager on the winning side. Now she stood on a bare hill in the high cold country, with the pine and the thin sharp air of the passes in her lungs, and she watched the wager get tested to the pin. Because Tlaxcala did not weep. Tlaxcala came up the hill in numbers she had no word for — a whole hillside of them, rising out of the folded ground where they had been waiting, their war-cries answered by drums until the noise itself was a weight against the chest. They came in ordered ranks behind their captains' banners, feathered standards swaying above them, and at the front of them the young war-leader whose name the scouts had learned to say with respect: Xicoténcatl, the son, the hawk who had not wanted the strangers weighed or hosted or studied but simply killed, here, in the hills, before they ever reached anyone who mattered. The Spanish square braced. She was in the middle of it, where the tongue was kept safe, close to the still man on his horse; and she made herself do the thing she had done since she was a girl carried out of her own house in the dark, which was to watch, and count, and not spend a breath on fear she could not use. The cannon spoke — a flat enormous cough of powder and smoke that flung a lane of ruin through the front of the charge — and the charge did not stop. That was the thing she filed and would not forget. The gap closed. Men she could see the faces of stepped over the men the shot had killed and kept coming, because to a people who had fought the lords of the lake for four generations, a weapon that killed at a distance was only a new kind of death, and they had made their peace with death before she was born. Then the lines met, and the world came apart into its pieces. She saw the obsidian clubs come down — the macuahuitl, the flat wooden sword edged with black glass, made not to cut a man in half but to open him and drop him and leave him breathing for the stone; she saw a Spaniard go down under one with his thigh laid to the bone, screaming in a language none of these men would ever learn. She saw a horse shrieking with three darts in its neck. She saw the still man's sword rise and fall, rise and fall, unhurried even here, and she understood that his stillness was not calm; it was a man spending exactly what the moment cost and not one coin more. A hand closed on her arm — a Tlaxcalteca who had broken into the square, his face striped for war, his eyes finding her, the Nahua woman in the strangers' camp, the traitor-tongue, the worst thing in the field to a man defending his own. She did not scream. She turned her wrist the way you turn out of a rope, and a Spanish blade took him across the back before his club came down, and he fell against her and then away, and she stood with his blood on the plain cloth of her huipil and pressed the inside of her own wrist, once, hard, where a rope had been — the old gesture, to check that she was still there — and found that she was. And in the middle of it, in the noise and the ruin, she did the sum, because the sum was the one prayer she trusted. These strangers could be hurt. These strangers could be killed. They were not gods and they were not unbeatable; they were a few hundred desperate men a very long way from home, holding a hilltop by nerve and iron against a nation that outnumbered them past counting — and they were going to lose, or they were going to need, more than gold, more than powder, more than horses, the one thing that could turn a nation like this from an enemy into an army. They were going to need her to talk. She looked at the wall of Tlaxcala coming on and coming on and did not yet know how she would do it. But she had found, in the middle of a battle she might not live through, the shape of the hole in this war exactly the size of a voice — and she had begun, without letting even herself quite say it, to move toward it. This is Flower and Song — history, lived from the inside. Tonight: the road to the city. Episode three. That's a conch — blown from the temple to mark the watches over the greatest city in the Americas. It told a quarter of a million people, on their lake-island, that the world was turning as it should. Then the strangers came off the eastern sea — and it was still sounding. Almost everyone you follow tonight is invented, woven from the real record — but among them walk the real ones now: the woman the Nahua called Malintzin, the captains, the lords of Tlaxcala, and the Great Speaker himself. The city on the water, the debt paid in blood, the strangers on the road to the lake — all real, and researched. Because the only way to understand a world is to live inside someone there. So — listen. In the city, four days' hard march from the hills where the fighting was, Chimalli stood in the council hall of the palace and waited, with the rest of the war-council, to be told what the god-on-earth had decided about the men who were killing their way inland. He touched the obsidian edge of his club before he spoke, the way another man clears his throat — and under the low pulse of the great skin drum that marked the hours even here, he made his case one more time, in the plain short speech of the field, because plainness was the last argument he had.
Chimalli: They are in Tlaxcala. They are being bled white in the passes as we sit here. A war-party of ours could fall on them and the Tlaxcalteca both, take the strangers alive on the road, and have them on the stone before the next new moon. The debt would be paid. The thing would be over.
Bram: He meant the debt the way he meant the ground under his feet: nextlahualli, the payment owed to keep the Fifth Sun moving across the sky, the blood freely given so that the morning would come again — not a belief he held but the order of the world, plain as water running downhill. And what he could not forgive, what sat in him like a swallowed coal, was that these strangers refused it. They killed and did not offer. They took and did not pay. To Chimalli that was not merely an enemy; it was men cheerfully sawing through the branch that held up the sky, and calling it conquest. Beside him his own faction leader spoke for him — Cuitláhuac, the Speaker's own brother, the hawk of the family, blunt where the court was smooth.
Cuitlahuac: The commander is right, and every day we wait the road behind them fills with allies. Strike now, brother, while striking still costs us a war-party and not a world. You know the flower-war. You know how a small thing left standing becomes, in a season, an army. These are a small thing, still. They will not stay small.
Bram: He was the Speaker's own brother, blunt where the court was smooth, a soldier in a hall of priests and diplomats; and Chimalli backed him not because they were friends — a made-noble and a prince of the blood were not friends — but because they were the only two men in the room who had stood in a shield-line and knew, in the body, what a delay costs. Around them the great lords sat in their ranked places, the judges and the priests and the keepers of the tribute-rolls, and Chimalli watched their faces and saw the thing that frightened him more than the strangers: that they were not frightened. They had ruled the world so long that the world's obedience felt to them like a law of nature, like the sun's rising. A threat that did not obey the rules was, to such men, not a threat but an error, a thing that would surely correct itself once properly understood. And understanding was the Speaker's whole art. And from the raised seat at the head of the hall, hedged about with screens and gold and the terrible courtesy of an office no man might approach with his eyes up, Moctezuma Xocoyotzin — the Great Speaker, elected from among the royal kin twenty years gone for exactly this, his judgment, his patience, his gift for moving last — did not answer them quickly. He let the silence do its work, the way the powerful always do. When he spoke, it was through the whole apparatus of his rank, the highest ceremonial Nahuatl, so hedged with honorifics that a plain man had to wait for the sense to arrive.
Moctezuma: A thing without a name is not struck. It is weighed. We have watched these strangers since the ships were first seen, three years and more; we have their measure in paint and in report; and a ruler who spends his warriors on a thing he has not finished understanding is not brave. He is a fool who has mistaken his own fear for haste.
Bram: There was a stir at that, and out of it a temple priest came forward, a man grey with fasting and want of sleep, and said the thing the court had been careful not to say aloud. The priest called the strangers teotl — and here is a word to hold, because a later world would break its teeth on it. Teotl, which the Spanish would hear as their own word god, meant no such tidy thing; it meant a power, an uncanny force, a thing extraordinary and not yet placed — and the honest posture of a Mexica priest before it was not worship but a question: what kind of power are you? The priest did not kneel to the strangers. He was afraid of them the way you are afraid of a comet, and he wanted the Speaker to name them before the not-knowing pulled the whole sky down.
Chimalli: They are men. I have heard the reports read out in this hall. They bleed. They foul themselves with fear before a battle as any man does. They hunger for the yellow metal past all reason. Name them a new kind of enemy and I will believe you. Do not name them gods to me, priest — I have watched too many men die well to hand these ones the sky for free.
Bram: He said it hard, and he believed it, and he was right; and it did him no good at all, because it was not the priest he had to move. He looked at the raised seat, at the stillness he had revered his whole climbing life — the made-noble's whole faith was in that seat, the order that had lifted a farmer's son to the war-council — and for the first time he felt something under the reverence he did not have a name for and did not want. The Speaker was not afraid. That was almost worse. The Speaker was curious. He had decided to bring the danger close and learn it, because knowing more and moving last had never once failed him — and Chimalli, who could not say it even to Cuitláhuac, felt the cold place open under his certainty and close again, and reached, without meaning to, for the high ceremonial words, the way a frightened man reaches for a prayer. On the road, the fighting had gone on until it stopped being a battle and became a question, and the question was decided not on the hill but in a council-house of the four lords of Tlaxcala, and it was decided through Malintzin's mouth. They had fought the strangers to a standstill — a bloody, expensive standstill in which Tlaxcala learned it could not simply sweep this small hard company away, and the company learned it could not go a step further with a nation like this at its back. So the great confederation that Tenochtitlan had ringed and blockaded and never conquered did the thing it had always done to survive: it stopped, and reckoned, and chose. And the choosing happened in a long stone room hung with the woven patterns that marked these people apart from the lords of the lake, the air heavy with copal-smoke over a hard bargain, and Malintzin stood at the still man's shoulder and carried the whole of it back and forth across the border of her own teeth. The young war-leader spoke first, and he spoke against her side with a contempt that did not bother to hide itself.
Xicotencatl: I have fought them. I have seen what the beasts do and what the fire-tubes do, and I say again what I said in the field: these are not guests and they are not gods, they are a knife that will cut whatever hand picks it up. We have kept ourselves free of the lake-lords for a hundred years by trusting no one's mouth. Why would we start with theirs?
Bram: Malintzin carried it to Cortés cleaner than it came — the boy's fury rendered into a captain's plain sense — and she watched the still man take it without a flicker, and answer soft, and lay his answer in her hands to carry back. He did not argue the boy down. He never argued anyone down. He told the lords of Tlaxcala a truth shaped exactly like a gift: that he too hated the lords of the lake, that his king across the water hated tyranny and tribute, that he had come, in effect, to help them win the war they had been losing slowly for four generations. It was mostly a lie and it was aimed like an arrow, and she felt it land, because it landed on a wound a century deep. The young hawk was not done. He leaned forward and threw the hardest thing in the room straight at the woman carrying it, because he understood, better than the captains did, that she was the real hinge.
Xicotencatl: And you, woman. You who wear their cloth and carry their words. When they are finished with the lake-lords, what do you think they will do with us? You are Nahua. You of all people should know what a strong power does to a weaker one it no longer needs. You are helping them build the very thing that ate your own people. Does that not keep you awake?
Bram: It was the truest thing anyone said in that room, and it was aimed at the one soft place she had, and she felt it go in. But she had learned long ago that a truth you cannot afford is simply a stone you set down and walk past, and she set this one down without a flicker crossing her shut-door face. She did not answer the boy; it was not her place to answer, only to carry, and she carried his challenge to Cortés flattened into something the captain could use — the young lord fears betrayal and wants assurances — and carried Cortés's smooth reply back inflated into something the boy could, barely, swallow. And here she did a thing she would not have done a month before. In the half-beat that was her whole country — the space between hearing a man's words and speaking them into the other tongue, the only ground a slave had ever been given to live on — she began, very slightly, to lean. She rendered the old lords' pride back to Cortés as caution he could work with, and rendered Cortés's certainty to the old lords as respect they could accept, and where a word could be carried warmer or colder, truer or a shade to one side, she carried it the way that opened the door rather than the way that closed it. She told herself she was only smoothing the passage. She heard, faint, the small catch that told her it was not entirely true, and she went on, because the alliance was survival, and survival was the only prayer she had left. The elders settled it. The old blind war-leader whose son had just spat defiance, and the shrewd senior lord who had spent his whole life doing sums in his head, had done this one too and found it came out one way only; and the young hawk was overruled by his own father. The confederation that had never bent to the lake would bend now, cold-eyed and clear, toward the strangers instead — not as dupes, not as the conquered, but as partners betting the free republic on the chance to break the old enemy at last. It would be sealed properly in the capital, later, with feasting and with gifts. But the thing itself, the turn of a hundred years' war, had already happened, here, in this room, in the smoke over a hard bargain — and it had happened through her. When it was done, when the thing was sealed and the lords had gone and the tent had emptied of its feathers, Malintzin stood a moment in the copal-smoke and let herself feel, under the fear, the one thing she never let show. Joy. The plain fierce joy of a thing done superbly that was hers. A war had turned in that room — tens of thousands of warriors folded into the strangers' cause, the road to the lake thrown open — and it had turned across the inside of her mouth, and no one in the whole shining confederation knew the width of that power except the one woman holding it and the one still man who had understood it in a tent three months and a whole life ago. She closed her hand slowly into a fist, and did not smile, because her face was a door and she kept it shut; and inside the one room no owner had ever entered, she was, for a moment, blindingly free. They brought the strangers into the city of Tlaxcala itself then, into the capital of the four-part confederation, and Malintzin walked at the captain's shoulder through streets lined with a people come to look at the beasts and the beards and the fire-tubes — and to look, some of them, at her, the Nahua woman in the strangers' train who had turned their war around with her mouth. The lords received them in the council-house, and Malintzin, standing between the tongues, met the men whose one hard sum had decided everything. There were four of them, the rulers of the four parts, but two carried the room. One was very old and quite blind — Xicoténcatl the Elder, the father of the hawk who had fought them in the hills — and he came forward and put his hands on the strangers, on Cortés and then, at a word, on the captains, reading their faces with his fingers because his eyes were gone, feeling the beards and the strange hard cheeks like a man checking the truth of a rumour with his own skin.
Xicotencatl: So. You are real, and you are men, whatever my grandsons say by the fire. Good. I have outlived my eyes and I did not want to leave this world having only heard of you. My son wished to kill you in the passes. He is not wrong to distrust you. But he is young, and the young think there is time to be proud. There is not. We have been penned by the lake-lords since before your king's grandfather was born. If you are the knife that opens the pen, we will grip you, and we will bleed on you, and we will not let go.
Bram: Beside the blind old man stood the one who had actually done the sum — Maxixcatzin, a smooth, level, senior lord with the sound of a man doing figures in his head even as he spoke, the shrewd realist who had bet the free republic on the strangers and would shelter them, later, when everything went wrong. He did not touch the captains. He weighed them, the way Citlali weighed grain, the way Malintzin herself weighed a room, and Malintzin recognised the habit and was, privately, reassured by it: a man who counts is a man you can predict.
Maxixcatzin: My lord father speaks of gripping the knife. I speak of what the knife costs. We give you our roads, our food, our warriors, our sons. We give you the safe city at your back when the lake breaks you, as it will try to. In return we ask a small thing and a large thing. The small thing: that when Tenochtitlan falls, we are not made to kneel where we did not kneel before. The large thing: that you remember, in the years after, who carried you. Captains forget. See that you are the kind who does not.
Bram: Malintzin carried it across, warmer to Cortés than the old realist gave it, warmer to the lords than Cortés's easy promises deserved, and felt the bargain settle into place — and she knew, even as she smoothed its edges, that Maxixcatzin had asked for the one thing these strangers would never in the end give, which was memory; that the tens of thousands of Tlaxcalteca who would win this war would be written out of it by the very men they were saving; and she said none of that, because it was not hers to say and would not have been believed, and because a tongue that warns both sides serves neither and does not survive. And they sealed it, as such things were sealed, with women. The lords gave noblewomen to the captains — daughters of the four parts, offered to make the alliance kin as well as calculation — and one of them, a lord's own daughter, quick-eyed and proud, whom the friar would baptise Doña Luisa and the captains would hand to the golden-bearded Alvarado, came to stand near Malintzin while the terms were read, because the interpreter was the one person in the room who lived in both worlds at once. They did not speak much. But the Tlaxcalteca girl looked at the enslaved woman who had been given away twice and risen to stand at the captain's shoulder, and Malintzin looked at the lord's daughter given away once, freely, as a piece moved on a board — and something passed between them that was not quite friendship and not quite pity, the recognition of two women who had both been spent for a peace and had both decided to be, if they could manage it, the hand that spent rather than the coin. It was the nearest thing to a peer Malintzin had been given in the whole war, and she took it, guardedly, the way she took everything, and did not let herself lean on it, because a woman who leans on another in a war has miscounted. That night the two hosts became one camp, and Malintzin walked its edge where the strangers' fires gave way to the Tlaxcalteca fires, and there she met the woman who would teach her what the alliance had actually bought. She was a spare, strong woman of about forty, grey coming into her braided hair, a jade labret at her lip, weighing a sack of maize in her two hands as she talked to a younger warrior — weighing it the way she seemed to weigh everything, grain, cloth, a man's chances, the whole world run through the scale of a quartermaster who had carried loads over mountains all her life. The warrior went off with the sack, and the woman looked up at the interpreter standing at the edge of the firelight and did not bother to hide that she was reading her right back.
Citlali: So. You are the tongue. The one who turned our lords into your captain's dogs in an afternoon. I have heard the young men curse your name already, which means you are good at the work.
Malintzin: I carry words. The lords decided; I only let them hear each other.
Citlali: Mm. And a knife only lets the throat feel the air. I have been provisioning wars since before you were sold, girl. No one only does anything, in a war. But sit. You are Nahua, whatever cloth they have put on you, and I am too tired to hate a woman for surviving.
Bram: So Malintzin sat, and Citlali — for that was her name — told her, in a flat dry mountain voice that never rose, the thing the strangers' story would one day forget to mention. That the war the captains thought they were fighting was not the war that was actually being fought. That for every Spaniard on this road there would be, before the end, a hundred, five hundred, of her people — Tlaxcalteca, and Totonac, and every altepetl the lake had ever bled — carrying the loads, growing the food, piloting the canoes, dying in the front rank in numbers no Spanish letter home would ever count. The strangers were the spark. The fire had been laid for a hundred years. And she, Citlali, moved the grain that fed it, and had her reasons, and named them without flinching.
Citlali: My husband went up the lake-lords' steps ten years ago. Taken alive in a flower-war, kept a year, walked to the stone as some Mexica warrior's beloved son. They called it sacred. I have buried enough men to know a killing when I see one dressed as a prayer. So when your captain came looking for hands to break Tenochtitlan, I did not need him to lie to me the way he lied to my lords. I would march beside the devil himself to see that stone thrown down. And I have a son of my own in this host, a good boy, too young to be careful, and every sack of grain I move keeps me close enough to know the day he falls, if he falls. So do not tell me about cost, tongue. I have been paying it since before you were sold.
Bram: And then the older woman looked at her a long moment, and weighed her the way she weighed the maize, and said the thing that Malintzin would carry out of that fire and not set down.
Citlali: But you. You are Nahua, and you carry their war to Nahua, and you sleep warm for it. I do not judge you — a woman sold twice takes the only road that is open, I know that road, I have watched a hundred women walk it. I only tell you what it costs, because someone should, once, before you are too far down it to hear. There will come a day when the words you carry kill people who are your own, and you will tell yourself you were only the tongue. Hold on to that telling, girl. You will need it.
Bram: Malintzin did not answer, because there was no answer that was both true and safe, and she had given up saying the true unsafe thing when she was eight. She inclined her head the exact degree that one hard woman owes another, and rose, and went back up toward the strangers' fires where the tongue was kept — and she touched the inside of her wrist, once, in the dark, and found it still answered, and set it down, and told herself the older woman was wrong, and did not, for a long time that night, manage to believe it. In the city, on a night watch on the lake wall, Chimalli did a thing he almost never did, which was to speak of where he had come from — because the young warrior beside him was frightened, and a frightened man on a wall is a danger, and the oldest way to steady a boy is to tell him how the world was made. Below them the lake moved black and wide under the wind, and somewhere off across the water a conch sounded the watch, thin and far, the city's own voice telling a quarter of a million sleeping souls that the hour had turned as it always turned. The boy had asked, in the roundabout way of the frightened, whether it was true that the strangers could not be beaten. And Chimalli, instead of answering, told him about the mud.
Chimalli: I was born in the black mud, you know. Not in a lord's house. My father grew maize on a chinampa out past the last canal, one of ten thousand men who fed this city and were never once thanked for it, and I worked that mud with him until my hands were older than my face. I had no right to this wall. A commoner does not stand on the war-council. I took my rank the only way the mud lets you take it — one captive at a time, on the battlefield, until the order that would never have chosen me had to make room.
Bram: He did not tell the boy the rest of it in words, but he carried it in him as he spoke, the way you carry a stone you have carried so long you have stopped feeling its weight until a cold night presses it against the bone. His first captive, at seventeen. A Tlaxcalteca warrior — one of these very people now marching in the strangers' train, he thought, and did not say — taken alive in a flower-war, harder and more dangerous than killing, the whole art of the capture-war being to break a man without ending him. He had kept the captive, and fed him, and dressed his wounds with his own hands over the long walk home, and grown, in the strange way of that custom, to love him; and at the end the man had called him beloved son as the rite required, and gone up the steps of his own accord, and Chimalli had stood at the bottom and wept and been proud at once, because in that moment the boy from the mud had understood, all through his body, what the whole terrible order was for. Not hatred. Not cruelty. The debt. The sun. The morning that was not free, and the men who paid for it so that everyone else's children could wake. He had come away from that stone a believer with a commoner's convert-zeal — because a man who has climbed a ladder out of the mud guards it harder than the man born at the top, and cannot, will not, dare not, let it be a lie.
Chimalli: So when you ask me can they be beaten, boy, you are asking the wrong thing. Of course they can be beaten. They are men; I have said so in the hall until the lords are sick of me. The question is whether we will strike them while striking still works — or whether we will study them, and host them, and be so certain of our own mastery that we let them walk in through the front of the world. That is the thing I am afraid of. Not the strangers. Us.
Bram: And there — in the dark, to a boy who would repeat none of it — the coal he had swallowed came up almost into the light. Because if the strangers refused the debt and the sun rose anyway; if they killed and did not pay and the world did not end; then either they were something his whole cosmos had no name for, or — and this was the thought he pressed back down with both hands, the thought he paid off later with his own blood on the maguey spine — the debt had never been owed at all, and the mud he had climbed out of had been climbing toward a lie. He did not say it. He looked out at the black water and the far thin conch, and he told the boy the sun would rise because the sun always rose, and did not tell him that he had begun, on nights like this one, to listen for it. The road left Tlaxcala and came, in the third week of October, to Cholula — and Cholula was a holy city, the greatest pilgrim-shrine in the whole land, sacred to the feathered serpent, the god of wind and learning and, of all things, of peace; and it was in that city, sacred to peace, that Malintzin's voice did the thing Citlali had warned her of by the fire. The Tlaxcalteca had not wanted to go in — old enemies of Cholula, they had made their camp outside the walls and watched the strangers enter the shrine-city with a wariness the Spanish read as superstition and Malintzin read as knowledge. Inside, the great pyramid of the feathered serpent rose above courtyards swept and gardened, priests moving in the smoke of copal, the ordinary sacred business of a city that had received pilgrims for longer than the lake-lords had existed. The Cholulteca lodged the company and fed them, coolly, correctly, and under the courtesy something was wrong, and everyone could feel it, the way you feel weather before it turns. It came to her through a woman — it always came to her through the small people no one thought to watch. There was an old Cholulteca noblewoman who had taken a liking to the young interpreter, or perhaps had seen in her a chance; the sources would later say the woman offered to make Malintzin her daughter, to marry her to her son, to get her out of the strangers' camp before the thing that was coming came. And in among the kindness, or the greed, or whatever it truly was, she let fall a warning: stay close to me, do not sleep in the open courts tonight. There are pits dug in the streets with sharpened stakes at the bottom, hidden under thin earth, exactly a horse's stride apart. There are warriors gathering by the thousand beyond the walls. There are envoys of the tlatoani in the city, with the tlatoani's gold, and the strangers who have walked in so trustingly are not, the old woman said, going to walk out. A plot. Whether it was a true plot — whether the Cholulteca truly meant to trap the company in their sacred city, or whether the pits and the warriors were an ordinary city's ordinary nerves, and the story was half-built afterward to give a massacre a reason — that is a knot for a later hour, and the narrator will not pull it here. What matters, tonight, is what Malintzin did with it. She thanked the old woman. She played, for a while, the part of the interested girl, drew her out, let her believe the marriage was possible, gathered every hard grain of the warning — the numbers, the pits, the envoys, the gold — the way she gathered everything, and kept her face a shut door over it. And then, when the old woman had gone, she stood alone a moment in the courtyard of the god of peace, under the great pyramid, and did the sum, and knew that whatever she now carried to the captain would not come back uncarried. She weighed it, in the cold clean way she weighed everything now, and she carried it to the still man. She did not soften it and she did not sharpen it; she laid the warning in his hands whole, the pits, the warriors, the envoys, the gold — and she watched him receive it the way he received everything, without surprise, as though the world were merely confirming a thing he had already decided to believe. And in the half-beat before she spoke, she understood something about the man she served that she would spend the rest of her life not looking at directly: that he had wanted a reason, and she had just handed him one, and that whether the plot was real or not had stopped mattering the moment it passed her lips, because a man like Cortés did not need a true reason. He needed a sayable one. She gave it to him true as she had it, and told herself that carrying a true thing truly was the whole of her duty, and did not let herself finish the thought that was forming underneath, which was that she had just become the door a massacre would walk through. In the morning Cortés summoned the lords and nobles of Cholula into the great walled courtyard by the temple, to hear him, he said, before he departed in peace — and they came, hundreds of them, unarmed, into a court with high walls and few gates, and Malintzin stood at the captain's side and knew, as she watched them file in, exactly what the walls and the gates were for. She had rendered the summons herself. She had told the lords of Cholula, in the courtly reverential speech, that the captain wished only to take his leave of them with honour — and they had trusted the words because the words were hers, and hers were the words that had never yet lied to them. She watched them come in through the gate, the fine cloaks, the grey priests, the old men of the council, filling the swept court under the pyramid of the god of peace, and she felt the whole weight of what she was settle onto her like a stone: that these men were here, in this walled place, because a slave in the corner had made a captain's trap sound like a courtesy. Then the signal came — a shot, a single flat cough of powder off the temple steps — and the gates were shut, and the killing began. She would not, afterward, be able to unsee it, and the narrator will not force you to see all of it. The Spanish came out of the doorways where they had been waiting with their steel, and the Tlaxcalteca poured over the walls from outside with a hundred years of grievance in their hands, and the courtyard of the god of peace became a killing-floor. The unarmed nobility of Cholula died against walls they could not climb, in gateways they could not reach, under blades and clubs, and the copal-smoke that should have been prayer went grey and then black with the smoke of powder, and the sound — she would hear the sound for the rest of her life — the sound was not a battle, because a battle answers back. This did not answer back. An old lord she had spoken with the evening before, a courteous man who had shown her the carvings on the pyramid of the feathered serpent and asked, gently, whether her own people in the south still kept the old songs, went down a few paces from where she stood, and she saw his face as it happened, saw him look, in the last moment, not at the sword but at her — at the tongue, the voice that had called them all in here with a promise of honour — and there was no hatred in the look, only a vast, final, astonished understanding, the look of a man learning in the instant of his death the exact shape of the lie he had believed, and where it had come from. Then he was gone, into the churn, and the killing went on over him, and the great pyramid of the god of peace stood over all of it in the smoke, indifferent, enormous, and the priests who served the god of peace died at the feet of their own god calling on him to do something, anything, and he did nothing, because gods, on the whole, in that courtyard, on that morning, did nothing at all. In the second rank of the strangers, a wiry sun-cured foot-soldier named Beltrán de Coria found that he had come into the courtyard with his sword drawn and could not, quite, make himself use it, and stood instead against the wall while it happened, counting — he counted when the fear came up too big to name — and lost the count, and turned his face away, and was sick, quietly, in the corner of a holy place, and told himself, as the little men always tell themselves, that the great men had decided this and a soldier only carries out what he is given. He would carry the averted face out of Cholula and never quite set it down. It was the first time his easy appetite for God and gold had been handed a bill he could not laugh off, and he did not laugh. And Malintzin stood where the tongue was kept, at the captain's side, above the killing, and did the only thing left to her, which was to be still and to keep her face a shut door. She did not weep; weeping was punished on the slave-road and she had unlearned it early. She said, inside the one room no one could enter, the sentence she had said to herself in the tent at Potonchán and a hundred times since — I am only the tongue; the words are not mine; I carry, I do not choose — and for the first time in her life the sentence did not hold. It cracked in the middle like a bad rope. Because she had chosen. Not the killing; the killing was the captain's. But the courtesy — the exact warm reverential words that had walked these men through that gate believing they were safe — those had been hers, chosen in the half-beat, carried warmer than the thing they hid, and she knew it, standing there, with the smoke rising off the god of peace. She pressed the inside of her wrist where the rope had been, hard, to check that she was still there. And this time it did not answer clean. Word of Cholula reached the lake before the strangers did — a plaza of the dead in the holy city, thousands, on the strength of a report no one could check — and Chimalli carried it into the council hall like a man carrying proof, because that was what it was: proof, at last, of exactly what these strangers were. The great drum was silent now; they had stopped its hours; the hall was lit only by braziers and the thing everyone was not saying, and somewhere out over the roofs an owl called, the sound the city made when it was afraid, the death-bird that no one wanted to hear on a night like this one. Chimalli gripped the obsidian edge of his club — the club he was not, in this hall, permitted to raise — and made his last case, and he did not bother with the plain field-speech now. He climbed into the high ceremonial words rung by rung, the way a man climbs onto higher ground as the flood comes up, because plainness had failed and the old speech was the only footing left.
Chimalli: Great Speaker — you asked for their measure and now you have it, written in the blood of the holy city. They came into Cholula as guests and left it a graveyard. This is not a power to be weighed. This is not teotl to be questioned. This is a killing-war that answers courtesy with slaughter, and it is four days from these walls. Bar the causeways. Break the bridges. Let them starve on the shore or die on the water. I beg you — strike, or host nothing but our own funerals.
Bram: And Cuitláhuac's voice came in hard behind his, the brother's voice, the hawk's:
Cuitlahuac: He has said it plainly, and I will say it plainer. Every hour you host them, brother, you host our ending. There is still a lake between us and them. There will not be, if they cross it as guests.
Bram: Moctezuma heard them out. He always heard everyone out; it was part of the terrible patience that had made him. And when he answered, it was not the answer of a man paralysed by omens, whatever a later, defeated world would say of him — it was the answer of the most powerful, best-informed man in that world, choosing, with his eyes open, the one strategy his whole life had taught him: bring the danger close, and control it at the range of a held hand.
Moctezuma: You would have me break my own bridges and starve in my own city, and call it strength. Hear the Speaker. A wall says I fear you. A closed gate says I could not weigh you, so I hid. I will do neither. I will bring them onto the causeway myself, under my own canopy, into my own hand — and there, where every stone is mine and every canoe is mine and the water itself answers to me, I will learn them at last, and hold them, and open my hand when I choose and not before. Control is surer than war. I have never yet lost a thing I kept close.
Bram: And Chimalli heard, in the reverence and the certainty, the exact shape of the disaster — because it was not a fool's plan. That was the unbearable part. It was the plan of the cleverest man in the world, the strategy a lifetime of unbroken victories had proven: bring the thing you cannot yet name inside your reach, and study it, and out-wait it, and move last. It had subdued kingdoms. It had made this the greatest city on earth. And it was, against these particular strangers, against men who answered a welcome with a massacre and a gift with a demand, precisely, exactly, the wrong tool — a net thrown over a fire.
Chimalli: Great Speaker — I have served the order my whole life. I climbed to this hall out of the black mud to serve it. So believe me when I say I do not speak from fear. A thing you bring close to control can turn in your hand and be at your throat before you close your fingers. You will not be holding them. You will be holding a blade by the edge, and calling it a hilt, and the city will pay the price of the cut. I beg you. Not the canopy. Not the open gate. Anything but the open gate.
Moctezuma: You climbed out of the mud, commander, and I honour the climb. But a man who climbed a ladder fears the fall more than the man born at the top; it makes him grip too hard. I do not grip. I keep. There is a difference you have not risen far enough to feel. The strangers come to my city on my road under my hand. That is my word, and the Speaker's word is the turning of the world. It is done.
Bram: And Chimalli understood, standing in the brazier-light with the owl calling over the roofs, that the order he had climbed out of the mud to serve was going to lose the world by being exactly what it was — masterful, patient, certain, unbending in the one hour it needed to bend. He looked at the raised seat and the revered stillness and felt the reverence and the horror pull against each other in his chest until something quiet tore. He did not kneel-away his loyalty; he was not that kind of man; he would serve to the last. But he knew, now, in the cold place under his certainty, that he was serving a decision that would end them, and that there was nothing a farmer's son on a war-council could do but watch the god-on-earth open the door and call it mastery. On the seventh of November the road climbed one last time, up through the cold pass that ran between the two great volcanoes — one of them smoking against the sky — and then it began to descend, and the land opened, and Beltrán de Coria, third son out of Coria who had come across the whole width of the world for God and for gold, stopped on the high road and forgot both. Below him lay the lake, wide and silver and ringed with cities, and out in the middle of it, joined to the shore by broad straight causeways over the water, stood a city that had no business existing. White towers and stepped pyramids rose straight up out of the lake, painted and gleaming, bigger than Seville, bigger than anything he had a word for; canoes threaded the canals between garden-plots that floated — that seemed to float — green on the shining water; smoke of a hundred thousand cook-fires stood up straight in the still morning; and over all of it, faint and enormous, came the sound of a city of a quarter of a million souls simply being alive. He had read, as a boy who could read a little, the tales of Amadís, the enchanted cities of the romances, the marvels that were always just over the edge of the real world. And here one was. Standing on the water. And he was going to help take it. He was not a man who wept. He wept. He stood in the ranks with the tears running into two days' beard and did not wipe them, and beside him a hard man who had said nothing kind since Cuba breathed out an oath that turned halfway through into a prayer and did not finish either, and that was how you measured the thing: not by its towers, but by the oath that could not decide what it was. And under the wonder, in the part of Beltrán that never stopped counting, a cold small voice said what he would spend forty years trying to unhear: the people you came to conquer have built the most beautiful thing you will ever see, and you are going to break it, and you will help. He set the thought down, because a soldier who came for gold is not allowed to grieve the thing he came to take. But it did not stay down. It never, after that morning, stayed down. They went down toward the water then, the whole column of them, Spanish and thousands of Tlaxcalteca allies behind, down out of the cold passes toward the shining plain of the lake and the island-town of Iztapalapa where they would sleep the last night before the city. And the closer they came the less they could believe it. The towns stood in the water on their own small islands, white and swept, joined to the shore by straight roads of stone laid across open water; canoes crowded the lake so thick in places a man might have walked across on them, come out to see the beasts and the beards, so many faces on the water that Beltrán gave up the count at a thousand and then at ten thousand and then simply stopped, because there was no number in him big enough and he knew it. He was a man of Coria, where the whole town would not have filled one corner of one of the markets he could see steaming ahead of him. He had thought, crossing the ocean, that he was going to a rich land of naked heathens to be improved by the Cross and the sword. He had not been told — no one had been told, no one in Castile could have been told, because no one in Castile had the words — that he was marching into a city greater than Seville, greater than Rome, cleaner than any city in Spain, a metropolis of a quarter of a million souls built by hand out of a lake, with a plan and an order and a beauty that made the proud towers of his own country look like the huts of a poor village. He walked the causeway with his mouth open and his soul, quietly, coming apart, and he was not the only one; up and down the column hard men were crossing themselves and saying, to no one, it is like the enchantments in the book of Amadís, it is like a dream, are we dreaming — and the answer, which none of them could yet bear, was that they were awake, and it was real, and they had come to take it. And a little way ahead of him on the causeway, walking now near the captain where the tongue was kept, Malintzin looked at the same city and felt a thing she had no one to tell. She was Nahua. This was the navel of the Nahua world, the greatest thing her people had ever built, and she was arriving at it in the strangers' company, as their voice, at the head of an army come to bring it down. She looked at the white towers on the water, and she alone in all that marvelling column heard, under the beauty, the silence that was coming for it — and she did not know yet that it would come, not the shape of it, but she felt the wrongness of loving a thing and marching on it in the same breath, and she pressed the inside of her wrist where the rope had been, and walked on toward the city, because walking on was the only thing the slave-road had ever taught her to do with a grief. They spent the last night before the city in Iztapalapa, a town on a spit of land half in the lake, in the palace of the Speaker's own kin — and the palace undid Beltrán de Coria all over again, because it was not a fortress and it was not a temple; it was a garden, and Beltrán had never in his life imagined that power could look like a garden. There were courts of cut stone, cool and swept, with chambers of cedar that smelled of the wood, and beyond them gardens laid out in walks with a thousand kinds of flower and tree, roses of the country and fruit he had no names for, and a great tank of sweet water, stone-cut and stepped, wide enough to row a canoe on, with a walk of tiled stone all around it, and birds — so many birds, kept and fed, ducks and larger fowl, that the sound of the water was a sound of wings. He walked the tiled edge of the tank in the last light with his billhook still on his shoulder and did the thing he did, which was to count, and gave up counting the flowers, and stood a while just breathing the smell of them.
Beltran: A man could stop here, you know. Just — stop. Grow a bit of something. Not have to be paid or shot at. There's worse ends than a garden.
Bram: The Basque beside him, a hard man with a broken tooth, spat into the perfect tank and said what soldiers say, that it would all be theirs soon enough, that the heathen kept a paradise while good Christians slept in ditches and it was past time the accounts were balanced. And Beltrán laughed, because you laughed, because the alternative was the thought that had been ambushing him since the pass — that the people who had built this, the walks and the flowers and the sweet-water tank full of tame birds, were not devils and were not scenery, but were, plainly, unbearably, better at the art of living well than anyone he had ever met — and that he had come across the whole width of the world, in the end, to help burn their garden down. He did not say it. He set it down, the way he set everything down, in the drawer of things he chose not to add up.
