The Plague With No Enemy

Bram: On the morning the city gave thanks for its victory, Chimalli climbed the temple with the sun and believed, for the last time in his life, that the world had been set right. It was not three moons since the strangers had been driven bleeding into the lake, and the city had spent them giving thanks. The causeway they had drowned on was still being cleared; the great treasure they had died carrying was still at the bottom of the water; and the city, which had held its breath for a whole grinding winter under an occupier's guns, had let it out at last in the one way the Mexica knew how to give thanks for a deliverance — by paying the debt. The council had ordered the great rite of gratitude, and the priests had prepared it for days, and Chimalli, a general of the war-council raised commoner to noble on the strength of the men he had taken alive, stood in his place at the head of the precinct steps in the grey light and watched the captives brought up: strangers taken in the rout, and allied warriors of the coast peoples who had marched with them, kept and fed and honoured these last weeks the way a captive is honoured, walked now to the stone as the sun climbed. This was the thing itself, and Chimalli had never stopped believing it. The sun did not climb the sky of its own strength. It was fed. It was kept moving across the heavens by the blood freely given, the debt of the world paid over and over so the Fifth Sun would not stop and the darkness not come and swallow everything that had ever been made. The captive on the stone was not murdered; he was offered; he was the beloved son whose death held up the sky. Chimalli had given forty men to the stone in his climbing life and had believed each time, with his whole chest, that he was doing the most sacred thing a man could do. And this morning, with the strangers gone and the debt being paid in gratitude for it, the whole order he had climbed out of the mud to serve stood around him as solid as the temple under his feet. The knife rose. The blood ran down the stone. The sun came up over the eastern mountains exactly as it had every morning of the world, and Chimalli felt the winter of doubt that Toxcatl had cracked in him heal over, for the length of a rite, and thought: it holds. Whatever else has broken, the sky still holds, and we still hold it. And then, near him at the edge of the platform, one of the young warriors waiting his turn to bear a captive up — a big well-made man of one of the good houses, a man Chimalli half-knew, strong as a canoe-pole — swayed on his feet. It was a small thing. A man sways. The morning was cold and the fast before a rite was long, and Chimalli thought nothing of it, and then the young man put his hand to the pillar to steady himself, and Chimalli saw the hand, and stopped thinking nothing of it. There were marks on the back of it. Small raised marks, a scatter of them, like the first blisters a burn raises, coming up under the skin from underneath as though something inside the man were surfacing. And the young warrior's face, when he turned it, had the same beginning on it, at the hairline, at the corner of the mouth, and his eyes were bright and wrong, and the sweat stood on him in the cold. Chimalli had spent his life learning to read the instant before a thing breaks. He looked at the marks on the strong man's hand and felt, with no reason he could have named, the same cold turning in his gut he had felt in the golden stranger's smile the day before Toxcatl — the certainty that he was being shown something, and could not yet read what.
Chimalli: You are ill. Go down. A man does not carry the offering with a sickness on him; it is not clean. Go to your house and sweat it out and give thanks from your mat.
Bram: The young man went, down the long steps into the waking city, and Chimalli watched him go and then turned back to the rite, and made himself attend to it, because the debt was the debt and a general keeps his face. But he had seen the marks, and he did not know them, and no one in that quarter-million-souled city knew them yet, and there was no captive on any stone that could be offered against a thing that came up from underneath the skin with no hand behind it and no face to strike. The knife rose again and the blood ran and the sun climbed, and Chimalli gave thanks with the rest, and did not yet understand that on the very morning the city thanked its gods for driving out the enemy it could see, the enemy it could not see was already climbing the temple steps at his side, marked, swaying, going home to a house full of people — and that it was not, in any way the debt could touch, going to be driven out at all. This is Flower and Song — history, lived from the inside. Tonight: the plague with no enemy. Episode six. That's a conch — blown from the high temple to mark the watches over the greatest city in the Americas, a quarter of a million souls on a lake, the navel of a world. It has sounded every watch of every day the city has stood, and its meaning has always been the same: the world is turning as it should, and we are keeping it turning. The strangers came off the eastern sea, and it was still sounding. The strangers were driven back into the water, and it was still sounding. But something came into the city with the strangers that has no face and answers to no knife, and tonight it begins to do what all their steel could not — and the man who has paid the sun's debt his whole life is about to ask it the one question his whole life never taught him to ask. So — listen. In the city, Chimalli found the sickness the way you find a fire in the night — not by seeing it, but by the wrongness in the air before you see it. It began within days of the thanksgiving. A house in his own ward went quiet. Then another. The lane that ran down to the canal, where the potters worked and the children ran the water's edge, thinned the way the great market had thinned in the coiled winter, only worse, because in the winter the fear had been of men, and men can be watched, and this could not. He went to the first house himself, because a general who has raised himself from a farmer's calpulli does not send another man to look at a thing he is afraid of. It was the house of a featherworker he had known thirty years, a good craftsman with a wife and a mother-in-law and five children and a shop, and Chimalli stood in the doorway and looked in and understood that he was looking at the whole household at once. They lay where they had lain down. The fever had a smell to it, thick and sweetish, and the marks he had seen on the young warrior's hand were on all of them now, come up out of the skin into a crust that covered the face and the arms and the chest, so that the featherworker's youngest, a girl of four, did not look like a child anymore but like something wearing a child's shape, and she was alive, and she was crying, a thin cracked endless sound with no strength behind it, and there was no one well enough in that house to lift her. The people had a word for a great sickness — huey cocoliztli, the great dying, the pestilence that comes on a city like a flood — and the old ones remembered such things from before, fevers that swept the wards and passed. But the old ones did not remember this. This was not a fever that swept and passed. This was a thing that came into a house through no door anyone could bar and lay down every soul in it at once, the strong man and the nursing woman and the child, and did not care which, and the healers who came to the first houses came away with the marks on their own hands three days later, so that to tend the sick was to become the sick, and a man learned to stand in the doorway and not go in. Chimalli stood in the doorway. There was an owl on the roof-beam of the house across the lane — an owl, in daylight, hunched and unblinking, the messenger of the lord of the dead, the bird whose one cry means illness and whose two mean a death in the house — and Chimalli, who did not frighten, felt the hair rise on his arms, because a warrior can be brave against a thing he can strike, and there was nothing here to strike. He had come with his club, the way he came everywhere, his thumb finding the obsidian edge of it as another man clears his throat, and he stood in the doorway of a dying house with the finest weapon in the world in his hand and no throat to put it to. So he did the only thing a man of his order knew to do against a great sickness. He went up to the temple and he paid. He gave to the sun, and to the rain-lord, and to the smoking mirror; he had the priests keep the fires and burn the copal and pierce themselves and offer; he bled his own ears and calves on the maguey spine — the long thorn of the agave, the little knife of piety with which a man draws the small debt of his own blood against the great debt owed to the sun — and gave what a man could give of himself; and the whole city, understanding at last that something terrible had come, turned to the gods with everything it had, and paid, and paid, and the priests climbed the steps and the smoke went up and the debt was offered as it had been offered for the driving-out of the strangers, more perfectly, more desperately, hand over hand. And the sickness did not slow. It did not even notice. It went house to house down the potters' lane and up into the wards of the lords and did not distinguish the pious from the careless or the noble from the commoner or the child at the breast from the priest at the altar; it took the ones who prayed and the ones who did not with exactly the same hand; and Chimalli, who had answered every threat of his life by paying the debt harder, paid it harder, and stood in the smoke of the temple looking down over a city where the coughing was spreading from ward to ward in the dark, and felt, for the first time, the small cold thought move at the very bottom of him, and pushed it down, because a man cannot look at that thought and go on. There was one house in the city Chimalli could not stop carrying up the temple steps in his mind, and it was not his own, and so on the fourth day, when the wards had begun to empty and the smoke would not stop rising, he went to the calmécac to see his son. Tozca was fourteen, and he was in the lordly school — the calmécac, the house of the priests and the sons of the great, where Chimalli himself, born a farmer's son in a commoner's calpulli, had never been allowed to set foot; he had climbed to the war-council from the commoners' house, learning the sacred by reaching up at it from below, and the one thing his whole rise had bought that he could not stop marvelling at was that his son learned it from the inside, by right, a made-noble's boy walking in the front of the world Chimalli had come in the back of. The school kept its boys behind stone, on a strict rule, half-starved and hard-taught, and in the pestilence that stone was the best wall in the city, and Chimalli had thanked the sun for it every day of the dying. They let him see the boy in the outer court, at a distance, the master watching. Tozca came out thin and straight in his plain novice's cloak, and he had his mother's quickness in the face and Chimalli's grave stillness in the body, and he was alive, and unmarked, and the sight of him unmarked took the strength out of Chimalli's knees for a moment the way no charge ever had — a plain living boy, clear-skinned, breathing, standing in the one clean court in a city of the marked, and for the length of a breath the whole grey weight of the winter lifted off the man entirely and there was nothing in him but the ordinary shining fact of a father looking at a son who was not dead.
Tozca: Father. They say the city is sick. They say two houses in every five have the marks. The masters have us grinding the medicines and reciting against the pestilence, and they will not let us out past the wall, not even to see our own. Is it true, what they say? That the priests offer and offer and it does not turn?
Bram: And Chimalli, who had recited the elders' speech in a hall of lords, who could climb into the high ceremonial Nahuatl the way a frightened man climbs into prayer, opened his mouth to tell his son the true thing, that yes, it was true, that the debt was being paid perfectly and the sickness did not turn, and found that he could not put that thing into the boy's ears, and found also that the high speech was not there for him to hide in — it had left him in the feast-court at Toxcatl and had not come back — so that he stood before his son with neither the truth he could not say nor the flowers to soften it, and what he had left was the plain speech, and a father's oldest trade, which is to stand between the child and the dark.
Chimalli: The masters are right to keep you behind the wall, and you will stay behind it, and you will do exactly as they say, and grind their medicines, and keep the rule, and not come looking for me or your mother whatever you hear. That is not fear. That is a soldier holding the ground he is given. Your ground is that wall. Hold it.
Bram: And because he could not say the rest — could not say I am afraid I will lose you to a thing I cannot fight, and you are the whole reason I climbed, and if the world I broke my life to leave you a place in is ending, then everything I did means nothing except that you are alive, so be alive, be alive, that is all I am asking of the whole turning sky — because he could not say any of that, he did the thing he had done once before, on the day he first walked the boy to this same gate and could not say his love: he gave him the verse instead. The old flower-and-song, the in xochitl in cuicatl, the parallel words the Nahua treat as almost a sacred substance, the flower and the song, the thing a man makes that is beautiful and does not last and is, for exactly that reason, the truest thing there is in a passing life. He spoke it low, across the court, the way you would hand a boy a small thing to keep in his cloak, and the boy took it, and understood, the way Tozca always understood, that the verse was the love his father could not otherwise carry across the gap, and held it, and did not shame either of them by saying so. Chimalli walked back down through the emptying city with the boy alive behind him and one small warm certainty in his chest against the cold, and it was enough to walk on, and it was not enough to make the smoke stop rising, and both of those were true at once, and he carried them both. On the highland road to the east, in the war-camp of Tlaxcala, Citlali weighed a sack of dried maize in her two hands, judged it a little short, said so to the man who had brought it, and did not look up when the news came in that the enemy was dying. Citlali was a Tlaxcalteca widow of about forty, grey coming into her braided hair, and she had provisioned war-camps most of her life, which is to say she had learned that a war is not won by the men who make the speeches but fed by the women who count the grain, and that the loudest person in any camp is usually the one about to die. Her people were a free republic, poor and hemmed in and never conquered, that the great empire on the lake had encircled for four generations and bled slowly in the flower-wars — the ritual battles whose captives went up the Mexica steps — and her own husband had gone up those steps a decade ago, kept a year and honoured and then given to the Mexica sun as somebody's beloved son, and so Citlali had marched with the strangers against Tenochtitlan the way any small people hemmed in by a great one marches: because anyone who would break the empire that ate your sons was worth marching beside. She did not love the strangers. She did not need to. She needed them to break the lake-city, and she had judged, coldly, that they could. And the strangers were here in the camp, broken themselves — what was left of them after the rout on the causeway, the few hundred of them, ragged, wounded, most of their horses drowned, all of their guns and gold at the bottom of the lake — sheltered by the Tlaxcalteca lords who had bet the republic on them and would not now cut them loose. Citlali had watched them come in off the mountains, and had done her count, the way she counted everything, and the count had told her the truth the strangers' own stories would never tell: that these few hundred beaten men had not conquered anything and could not conquer anything, and that the thing that was going to break Tenochtitlan was not standing in this camp bandaged and licking its wounds. It was the tens of thousands of her own people, and the peoples like hers, who were even now gathering to the war — the Tlaxcalteca, the Totonac, the Texcoca who had turned their coats, a host you could not see the end of — and it was the ships. For the strangers had a plan, and Citlali, who priced everything, could see the sense in it. They had saved the iron and the rigging from the fleet they scuttled on the coast a year ago, and now, here in the highlands, with the lake taken from them, they were building boats — thirteen of them, big ones, with sails, boats the like of which had never been on the lake, boats that could carry cannon and ride down the canoe-fleets and cut the causeways and choke the island off from the shore. The carpenter with the burned face went up and down the timber all day. And when they were built they would have to be carried — carried in pieces, mast and plank and nail, over the high passes, down to the water — and it would take thousands of porters to do it, thousands of her people bending their backs under the beams, and that, Citlali understood, was the real shape of this war: not the few hundred foreigners with the famous steel, but the endless patient host that would carry their ships to the water and do their dying for them, and settle its own old scores while it was about it. So when the runner came into the camp with the news, and the lords' fires took it up, and it went round the camp as the best news there had been all the long year — that a sickness had broken out in Tenochtitlan, a great dying, that the enemy city was burying its own faster than it could dig, that the mighty were falling in heaps with no one lifting a hand — Citlali heard it, and set down the short sack of maize, and did not cheer.
Citlali: A sickness that does not tell a Mexica from a Tlaxcalteca. A sickness that came off the strangers' ships and does not ask whose child it takes. And we are marching toward it, are we, with our sons, over the same passes the strangers walked? Rejoice, then. Rejoice that the thing eating them cannot read a banner.
Bram: The lord she said it to laughed and told her not to sour the one good turn the year had given them, and she said nothing more, because it was not her place and because he was not wrong that it was a good turn, and she weighed out the maize and entered the count and did not say the other thing, the thing that had come to her standing there with the good news in her ears — that she had marched to see the empire that ate her husband brought down, and had wanted it her whole widowed life, and that a thing which brought it down by laying four-year-old children in rows was not, whatever else it was, the clean justice she had marched for; and that she was going to have to carry that, along with the grain. In the city, at the height of it, Chimalli walked from his own ward to the temple through streets he had walked all his life, and the walk taught him what no battle ever had, which is what it is to be a warrior in a war with no enemy. The market at Tlatelolco, the loudest place in the world, where sixty thousand people had traded in a single square and the roar of it carried a league across the water — the market was silent. Not quiet. Silent. The lanes of the feather-sellers and the cacao-traders and the medicine-women stood empty, the mats rolled, the goods rotting where they sat, and the only sound in the greatest market on earth was the wind coming off the lake and, somewhere, a dog that no longer had a master, and the flies. There were a great many flies now. The city had always had its noise — the drum from the temple, the conch at the watches, the grind of the maize-stones in ten thousand courtyards at dawn, the roar of the market, the children at the canals — and one by one the sounds had gone out, the way lamps go out in a house where everyone has gone to bed, except that no one here was going to get up. He passed the houses. That was the thing he made himself do, because to look away felt like one more abandonment. In the good weeks the households had died and been carried out and burned or sunk in the canals with what rite could be managed; now, at the height, there was no one left well enough to carry anyone, and so the households died where they lay, whole families behind their reed doors, and after them the neighbours who had crept in to help, and the dead lay in the houses with the dying, and the marks were on all of them, the crust that covered a face until it was not a face, and Chimalli walked past door after door and did the count without meaning to, the soldier's count, the count Beltrán of Coria was doing on the far side of the same war — one house, two, a whole lane, a ward — and stopped counting, because the number the count was climbing toward was the city. He saw the children. He would carry the children to the end of his life. In one court, a row of them, laid out by someone who had had the strength to lay them out and then no strength left for anything after, small bodies in a line under a wall, the marks on them, and a woman sitting against the wall beside them not tending them and not weeping, only sitting, with the same marks coming up on her own hands, waiting her turn, past the reach of any word he had. He stopped in the gateway. He was a tlacatēccatl of the war-council, a jaguar warrior, a man who had walked into forty fights and taken his enemies alive at terrible risk because killing was the easy thing and keeping was the sacred one, and he stood in the gate of a courtyard full of dead children with his club in his hand and there was nothing, nothing, no charge to lead, no wall to break, no captive to give, no enemy anywhere in the wide and shining valley that a man could put a blade to, only the marks coming up out of the skin of a city, from underneath, with no hand behind them; and he understood in his own churning gut the thing the whole shape of his life had hidden from him: that there are kinds of ending a warrior is of no use against at all, and that this was one, and that the sun, to whom he had given forty men and his own ears' blood and the whole faith of his climbing life, was watching a quarter of a million of its most faithful children die in rows and doing precisely, exactly, measurably nothing. And there was no one left to carry the rite of the dead, which was its own second dying. In a city that had buried its people for four generations with the proper offices — the bundle, the dog to guide the soul across the nine rivers of the underworld, the four years' journey provisioned, the fire — the dead now went into the canals unbundled and unprovisioned, or lay in the shut houses because the strong were gone and the marks were on whoever was left, and the smell of it settled over the wards and did not lift, and the flies came up off the water in the thousands with a sound that would come back to Chimalli, after, in any room that ever went too quiet. He passed a temple of a small ward where the fire had gone out. He had never in his life seen a temple fire out. The fires of the city were kept the way the watches were kept, forever, by men whose whole office was the keeping of them, and here was a cold hearth on a small temple with the ash blown grey across the step, not because the ward had stopped believing, but because every man who knew how to feed that fire was dead, and Chimalli stood and looked at the dead fire and understood that the sickness was not only killing the people of the city. It was killing the city's hands — the drummer, the priest, the fire-keeper, the healer, the man who knew the songs and the man who knew the tribute-counts and the woman who knew which herb turned which fever — all the knowledge a great city carries in living heads and nowhere else, going out ward by ward like the fires, so that even the ones who lived would wake in a city that had forgotten half of how to be itself. He did not think it in words, not yet. He put it down. A man puts a thing like that down the way he puts down a coal, fast, before it burns through the hand. But it had been in the gateway with him, in the silence where the market-roar had been, and he carried it up to the temple, and he paid, because there was nothing else his hands knew how to do, and the smoke went up over a city that two in every five of its people had already left, and the sun, fed and thanked and bled for, climbed the untroubled sky the next morning exactly on time, and did not slow, and did not care, and did not — this was the thing, this was the whole terrible thing — did not appear to need them at all. Chimalli did not surrender the city to it without a war. He was a soldier, and a soldier who cannot find the enemy looks harder; and so for a stretch of the dying he threw everything the world knew at the thing, and learned, one method at a time, that the world knew nothing that touched it. He brought a curandera to the war-council's own houses — a healer-woman of great name, who knew the herbs and the sweat-bath and the setting of the marks against the calendar, who had turned fevers her whole life. She did what she knew. She steamed the sick in the temazcal, the sweat-house, until the bad heat should break; she gave them the bitter infusions and the pastes drawn on the skin; she read the day-signs and matched the cure to the birth. Chimalli watched her work with the respect of a man who has learned to respect competence wherever he finds it, and he watched the ones she tended die on exactly the same day as the ones no one tended at all, and he watched her stand back from a mat at last with her hands hanging and say the thing a soldier hates worst to hear from anyone who is supposed to know their trade.
Curandera: I do not know this. I have turned the coughing sickness and the burning sickness and the sickness that comes with the bad water, and I do not know this one. It does not answer the herbs. It does not answer the bath. It does not answer the offering. It is not in any of the counts I was taught. It came from outside all our counting, and it keeps none of our laws, and I can ease a death but I cannot stop one, and I have not been able to stop one, not one, and you should not have me tend the war-council, lord, because I will only bring it to you.
Bram: And the priests offered. This was the harder failure to watch, because the priests were not wrong to offer — when the order of the world is threatened you do not suspend the rites that hold the order together, you perform them harder, you feed the sun more exactly, you pierce yourself more deeply, you show the gods and the frightened people that the debt will be kept whatever walks into the city; Chimalli believed this in his bones, he was one of them in his bones, and he backed them with his whole chest. And the priests climbed the steps and kept the fires and offered the captives that were left and bled themselves grey, and the sickness took the priests. It took them on the steps. It came up on the hands that held the knife and the ears that had been pierced ten thousand times, and the men whose whole lives were the paying of the debt paid it now with their own bodies, uselessly, in rows, and the fires on the temple began to go untended for the first time in the memory of the city, not because anyone had stopped believing, but because the believers were dead. Chimalli stood one evening in a ward where a young warrior of his own division lay marked and burning — a good man, a man who had crossed the causeway and killed strangers in the rout not two moons past, who had a full quiver still on the wall of his house and a war-club with his name-work on it and the strength to use them — and the man looked up at his general out of a ruined face and asked the only question left, and Chimalli had no rank of speech to answer it in, high or low.
Warrior: Where is it, lord? Show me where it is. Give me the wall it is behind and I will go over it; give me the causeway it comes down and I will hold it till I drop; I am not afraid to die on my feet against it, only show me the FACE of it and let me fight. That is all I have ever known how to do. Where is the enemy?
Bram: And Chimalli looked at the full quiver on the wall, and the club with the man's name on it, and the strength going out of the best kind of man the city made, into a thing with no wall and no causeway and no face; and he did not lie to him, because you do not lie to a dying soldier, and he did not have the truth to give him either; and what he said was the plain thing, the only true thing, and it was the sound of the bottom dropping out of the world he had climbed.
Chimalli: There is no wall. There is no face. There is nowhere to go over and nothing to hold. If there were, I would put the whole city on it and spend us all, and gladly. But it is not that kind of enemy. It is not any kind we have a word for. Rest. I am sorry. Rest, and I will keep the fire for you as long as there is anyone to keep it.
Bram: On the road below the passes, moving grain down toward the water for the host that was gathering, Citlali came through a Mexica hamlet that the sickness had reached before her, and there she did a thing she did not tell anyone, and could not, afterward, entirely explain to herself. The hamlet was a tribute-village of the lake-empire, the kind of place her people had been raided and taxed and marched against her whole life, full of exactly the tongue and the gods and the arrogance she had marched to see broken; and it was dying. She came through it with her carriers, on the errand of the war, and she saw the same thing that was in the city forty times over — the quiet houses, the marks, the ones too weak to carry the ones already gone — and she told her carriers to keep moving and not to touch anything and not to breathe the air of the houses, which was sound quartermaster's sense, and they kept moving. And there was a child at the edge of the last house, a girl of perhaps five, sitting in the dust where she had crawled to be out of the smell, the marks coming up on her, her mother somewhere behind her in the house past helping anyone, and the child was not crying, which was worse than crying; she was past it, sitting in the sun the way the woman in the city's courtyard had sat, waiting, with the terrible patience of the very young who have understood something the words for which they do not have. And she looked at Citlali. That was all. She looked at her, out of a Mexica face, an enemy's face, the face of the people who had walked Citlali's husband up the steps, and there was nothing in the look but thirst. Citlali stood in the road and did the arithmetic she had done her whole life, the cold clean arithmetic that had kept her alive and kept the host fed and kept her from drowning in a grief that would have been no use to anyone: that a Tlaxcalteca does not stop for a Mexica child; that this child's people took her husband and would take her son if the war turned; that the water on her back was counted, was owed to the host, was not hers to give away to the enemy's dying young; that mercy in a war is a luxury paid for with someone else's ration; that she had marched precisely so that houses like this one would fall. She did the whole sum. And then she did not abide by it. She did not go to the child; she was not a fool; she did not touch her or the house or breathe the air of it. But she took a gourd of water from her own carry, her own, not the host's, and she set it down in the dust at the edge of the road within the child's reach, and she stepped back, and she watched the child understand it and crawl to it, and she said nothing, and she signalled her carriers on, and she walked out of the hamlet and never told one living soul that she had done it, because a Tlaxcalteca does not save Mexica children, and because she could not, that day, standing in that road, make the arithmetic come out any other way than the way her hands had already gone; and she carried the child's face down the pass along with the grain, and it weighed more than the grain, and she did not set it down for the rest of her life. And then the sickness climbed the last wall it had left to climb, and went into the palace, and took the one man the city could least afford to lose, and Chimalli was there to see it, because the man was his. Cuitláhuac was the tlatoani now — the Great Speaker, chosen by the council in the days after the rising, elected the way the Mexica had always chosen their rulers, from among the royal kin, for fitness to the moment. He was Moctezuma's brother, and he was the hawk, the war-leader, the man who had wanted the strangers destroyed at the coast before anyone understood them and had been overruled by his brother's fatal patience all the long ruinous year; and Chimalli had backed him through all of it, the two of them straining against the leash together, right about the danger and unable to move the man who outranked them both. And then the leash had come off, and Cuitláhuac had led the rising and shattered the strangers on the causeway, and the council had raised him to the mat at last — the right leader, come round at last to the moment that finally demanded him. For a few weeks, in the wreck of everything, there had been that one hard cause for hope: that the city had, at its worst hour, put its best war-mind on the mat, a man who saw the enemy clearly and did not flinch, a man who could hold the city for the siege that everyone knew was coming. And the sickness took him. Not in battle, where a war-leader is supposed to fall; not by a stranger's steel; but in his own rooms, the marks coming up on the hands that had led the counterattack that drowned the enemy, the fever burning down a man in his hard prime, eighty days on the mat and no more. Chimalli was let in near the end, because he was of the man's own faction and had earned the right, and he stood in the doorway of the room where the Great Speaker of the Mexica lay dying of a thing no warrior can fight, and Cuitláhuac, who had a hard chest-low bark of a voice that kept its warmth only for the word city and never for the strangers, spent some of the last of it on the man in his doorway.
Cuitlahuac: I wanted this war my whole life, Chimalli. I wanted the leash off. And the sun gives me the war and the mat and the city, all at once, at the end — and then sends a thing with no face to take me off the board in eighty days, before I can lead one causeway of the fight I spent my life arguing for. Tell me the debt is being kept. Tell me the fires are lit.
Chimalli: The fires are lit, lord. The debt is kept. The whole city bleeds for you.
Bram: And Cuitláhuac looked at him a long moment out of the ruined face, and Chimalli — who had known this man twenty years, who had read the instant before the strike forty times and lived, who could read a man the way the curandera read the day-signs — saw the Great Speaker of the Mexica understand, in his last hours, the exact thing Chimalli himself was still refusing to understand, and say the nearest thing to it that a tlatoani could let himself say, which was not despair, because the man did not have despair in him, but which was worse than despair, because it was clear.
Cuitlahuac: Then the debt is kept, and I am dying anyway, and the fires are lit, and my city is emptying anyway, and you and I have paid it all our lives, Chimalli, all our lives, and here is what it buys. Keep it anyway. Do you hear me? Whatever you come to think in the dark — and you will think it, I see you starting to think it — keep the city. Not the sun. The city. There is a boy coming up they will put on this mat when I am gone, Cuauhtémoc, Ahuitzotl's son, a good hard boy with nothing left to steward but a defence — give him the city, not your faith. The faith is between you and the dark. The city is real. Keep the city.
Bram: He died within the day, the tenth Great Speaker, eighty days on the mat, of the enemy with no hand; and the council met in the emptying city and chose the young one, Cuauhtémoc, barely into his twenties, a former lord of Tlatelolco, elected onto a throne that was already a death sentence, a sacral office handed a boy with no cosmos left to keep and only a siege to command. Chimalli stood in the council and watched them raise him — a clear ringing young man's voice held rigid over grief, every sentence squared to a vow, the sacral cadence of a Speaker tightened down to a soldier's by a boy who had decided, visibly, in front of them all, that whatever else he did he would not break — and Chimalli heard the young tlatoani take the office, and heard under the vows the thing the boy was not saying, which was that he knew as well as any of them that he had been handed a lost war and a dying city and a mat still warm from a man the sickness had killed in eighty days, and had taken it anyway, squared to it, because there was no one else and because not-breaking was the last thing the culture had left to be; and Chimalli looked at the boy on the mat with the vows in his mouth and Cuitláhuac's last words in his own ears — keep the city, not your faith — and felt the two of them, the dead man and the young one, close around the thing at the bottom of him like a hand. On the high passes, in the cold, Citlali stood at the side of the road and watched the ships go over the mountains, and understood that she was looking at the end of Tenochtitlan being carried on the backs of her own people. They had built the thirteen boats at Tlaxcala, out of new timber and the saved iron of the scuttled fleet, and now they had taken them apart again — every plank and mast and rib numbered, the sails folded, the nails in sacks — to carry them in pieces over the high country and down to the water's edge, where they would be put back together on the lake the strangers had been driven off, and launched, and turned into the thing that would choke the island to death. And it took, to carry them, no steel at all, and no horses: it took backs. Thousands of porters, tens of thousands, a column of her own people and the peoples like hers stretching up the pass and over the shoulder of the mountain and down the far side out of sight, each with a beam or a coil of rope or a sack of nails on the tumpline across the brow, bent under it, breathing hard in the thin cold air, carrying the strangers' navy over the roof of the world on their backs. Citlali had marched to break the empire, and here was the empire being broken, carried past her one beam at a time, and she found she could not simply be glad of it, and she stood at the road's edge with a younger woman of the host, a girl of her own people flushed with the nearness of the victory, and said the two things at once that had been the truth of her whole war, because someone ought to hear them said even if it was only a girl who would forget them.
Host_woman: Look at it, aunt. Look at us. All these years under their heel and their flower-wars and their tribute, and now we carry the thing that finishes them. We will be free of them. Are you not glad? Say you are glad.
Citlali: I am glad. I am. I have waited my whole life to be this glad, and I am, and I will not pretend to you that I am not. And I have carried grain to two hundred war-camps, girl, and I have learned to read a thing while I am carrying it, and here is what I read on this road. We are not their partners. We are their porters. When this is done, and the lake is theirs, and the empire that ate our sons is a ruin, we will look up expecting to be counted friends, and we will find that the new masters do not trouble to count us at all — that they will hold us cheaper than they held the enemy we are killing for them, because at least the enemy was worth their fear. I would still carry the beam. I would carry it again tomorrow. But I will not lie to a girl on a cold road and tell her that the men we are handing the world to are going to remember, in one year or a hundred, who carried it for them.
Bram: And she shouldered her own load, and went on down the pass toward the water, following the ships and the endless column of her people carrying the ships, toward the lake and the dying city and the siege that all this was assembling itself into; and she did not say the last thing, the thing that had come to her watching the enemy's children die in the road, which was that the war she had wanted her whole life was going to be won, and that she was going to grow old never quite sure it had been worth the winning, and that this, this exactly, was what it cost to be one of the tens of thousands whose backs carried a history that would be told, when it was told at all, as the deed of a famous few. In the city, in the worst of the winter, Chimalli came home in the dark to the one house in the world where he was not a warrior, and found his wife awake and waiting, and this time he did not sit down apart from her. Xóchitl was a potter's daughter he had married for love against the mild disapproval of his new rank, twenty years ago, when he was newly raised and could have reached higher and had not wanted to; she was the one un-cosmic thing in his life, the world he was defending made into a person, and her bed was the single place his certainty had ever faltered, which was exactly why, in the year since the strangers came, he had closed even that door — as if a man saving himself for the war owed the debt of his own body to it and could not spend even that on tenderness. He had opened the door once, a night in the spring before the feast that became the massacre, and had closed it again after, because the war was not done with him. And now it was winter, and the city was dying of a thing no war could touch, and Cuitláhuac was three days dead, and the boy Cuauhtémoc had the mat, and Chimalli came in out of the smoke and the silence and looked at his wife by the banked hearth, alive, unmarked, the grey in her hair and the potter's strength in her hands, twenty years known and still, God help him, the whole of the world he had left, and he found he could not close any more doors. He had run out of doors to close.
Xochitl: You have that look. You had it the night before the feast, and you have it worse now. Sit. Not over there. Here. You have been carrying the whole city up those steps in your arms for a moon, and it has not got any lighter, and you are going to set some of it down tonight if I have to take it off you myself. Come here.
Bram: And he came, and he sat, and she took his scarred campaign-hard hand in her two potter's hands and did not ask him anything, because she knew he could not tell her the council's business and had learned across half a lifetime that the not-asking was one of the true languages between them; and he felt the year of held discipline, the closed doors, the body owed to a war, the whole architecture of a man saving himself for a debt — he felt it give, all at once, the way a wall gives, not stone by stone but all together; and he reached for her the way he had not let himself reach for anything in a year, and pulled her in, and she came, and for a while there were no marks on any skin, no smoke on the temple, no thing with no face loose in the streets, no debt owed to any sun that was not answering — only the two of them in the dark and the heat of her under his hands. It was not the young hunger of twenty years gone. It was slower and surer and shot all through with grief, the want of two people who had learned each other's bodies across half a lifetime and knew exactly how little of that lifetime might be left, and it took its time, because there was nothing to hurry toward that was better than this; he pulled the cloak from her shoulder and set his mouth to the warm skin of her throat and felt her breath go, and she drew him down, and the weight of her against him was the whole argument of a long marriage made flesh, the withholding and the giving both, twenty years of her, and he gave himself over to it entirely, the way he had surrendered to nothing in a year, hating for one instant how badly he had needed it and then stopping hating it and letting it have him wholly, her hands hard at his back, the low sound she made, the give of two bodies with nothing left in the world to hide from each other. And afterward, tangled in the dark with her head on his chest, the thing he had never once said to her in twenty years came up under his ribs and, for the first time in his life, got out. He had paid it down every time with his own blood on the maguey spine; he had let her lay her palm flat on his chest over the place where it lived and never made her hear it; he had carried it alone because to say it was, he had always believed, to let it be true. But the city was dying and the debt was not answering and Cuitláhuac was dead of a faceless thing with the fires lit for him, and Chimalli was too tired and too emptied and too far past the end of himself to hold the door on it any longer, and he said it, low, into her hair, in the plain speech, the only words he had left.
Chimalli: I do not think the sun is drinking it. I have thought it since the feast-court and I have not been able to stop thinking it since the children in the rows, and tonight I am going to say it once, to you, in the dark, and then I am never going to say it again. I have bled myself on the spine every night of this dying. I have kept the debt perfectly. And it does not slow. It does not turn. It does not — Xóchitl, I think it does not notice. I think the sun does not care, and was never fed by us at all, and that everything I climbed out of the mud to serve, everything I walked forty men to the stone believing, is a thing the lords told, and that I have given my whole life to a debt that no one was ever collecting. There. That is the thing I am. Now you have heard it.
Bram: And Xóchitl, who read clay and read him, did not tell him he was wrong, because she did not know whether he was wrong, and did not tell him he was right, because she was not cruel; she lay with her head on his chest over the place where the thing had lived all these years, and she was quiet a while, and then she said the thing that was going to save what could be saved of him — not his faith, which was past saving, but the man.
Xochitl: Then let it be a thing the lords told. Suppose you are right. Suppose the sun climbs whether we bleed or not, and always did, and the debt was only ever a story. You are still here. Tozca is still behind his wall. This house is still standing, and the lake is still out there in the morning, and the flowers still come up on the chinampa in the spring whether anyone owes anything for them or not. You did not love those things because the sun required it. You loved them because they are yours. If the debt is a story, then loving them is not a payment you make to keep the sky up — it is only loving them, which is a smaller thing and a truer one, and it does not need the sun's permission, and it never did. You have been defending the city as a debt. Defend it as a thing you love. I promise you it will hold your weight better.
Bram: And Chimalli lay in the dark with his dead faith and his living wife and the one small verse of flower-and-song he had given his son turning in him, and did not answer her, because there was no answer that was not just holding her tighter, and he held her tighter; and outside, across the emptying city, no market roared and no drum spoke and the conch sounded the last watch of the night thin and far over the water, and for the first time in his life he heard it without believing it was holding up the sky, and heard, underneath it, the other thing it might be — a man on a temple in the dark, telling a dying city the hour, because the city was his and someone ought to keep the watches — and lay very still, and did not yet know that he had already, lying here, begun to choose. He could not sleep, and so before dawn he rose from beside his sleeping wife and went out into the small court of the house alone, in the cold, to pay the debt, because his hands did not yet know how to stop even when the rest of him had; and there, on his knees in the dark, he had the night that the whole rest of his life would be lived on the other side of. He did the thing he had done every night of the dying and ten thousand times before that in his life. He took up the maguey spine and drew it through the flesh of his earlobe as the custom was, and let the blood come, and caught it, and offered it up into the dark toward the temple and the sun that was not yet risen, the way he had offered it every night, the small clean private debt of a man who kept the order whatever walked into his city. And it would not stay paid. That was the thing. He knelt in the cold with his own blood on his hands and he offered it and it was as if he were pouring water into sand, as if the offering fell out of the world the instant he made it and left nothing, changed nothing, was received by nothing; and he thought of the children in the rows, and the curandera's hanging hands, and the priests dying on the steps with the knives still in them, and Cuitláhuac telling him in a dead man's v…
