Bram: Before the end of it — before the towers came down and the lake gave up its dead — there was a canoe on the open water, running for the free shore, and an old man in the stern of it who had spent his life keeping other men's secrets and now had only one left to keep. On the water, Tlacotzin, the cihuacoatl, the second voice of a kingdom that had a day left to live, knelt low in a fast war-canoe and watched the shore that meant freedom come no closer. He was too old for the paddle and he did not touch it; the young men bent to it, eight of them, driving the light hull across the flat afternoon water toward the reed-beds of the mainland where a man might still slip into the marsh and be a farmer again and not a lord of a dead city. In the middle of the canoe, wrapped against being known, sat the young man they were carrying — Cuauhtémoc, the Speaker, the last of them, twenty-five years old and the holder of an empty office, whom Tlacotzin had sworn to get off the lake alive. That was the whole of the plan. Get the Speaker to the reeds. A kingdom that had ruled from sea to sea was reduced, on the afternoon of the thirteenth of August, to eight paddles and a promise. The lake was not theirs. That was the thing Tlacotzin could not make his old heart believe even now, with the proof of it all around him: the wide bright water that had been the city's moat and its market-road and its cradle for two hundred years was the enemy's floor, and on it, everywhere, the strange high ships stood at their ease. He had watched them all summer take the water a stroke at a time, and he had told himself, the way a man tells himself a lie he needs, that the reeds were close and the ships were slow and a small fast canoe on a wide lake is a hard thing to catch. Then behind them a shape came off the glare, low and long under a great pale wing of sail with the oars going in it too, faster than a thing that size had any right to be, and it was already turning to cut the line between the canoe and the shore, and Tlacotzin understood that they had known. Someone had told the strangers which canoe. There is always someone. He knew this young man in the middle of the canoe better than anyone left alive knew him, which was not very well, because Cuauhtémoc had never been a man who let himself be known. Tlacotzin had stood at the side of three Speakers now. He had counselled the great Motecuhzoma, who studied the strangers and was destroyed by his own cleverness; he had counselled Cuitláhuac, the hard one, the war-leader the moment finally demanded, dead of the sickness in eighty days; and now he knelt in a fleeing canoe beside the third, a young man barely out of the priests' school, handed a dead office over a dying city and asked to hold up a sky that had already fallen. Cuauhtémoc had refused every counsel of surrender for ninety-three days. He had held the last wedge street by street on grass-seed and brack water, had watched the towns go over to the enemy by the week and the leadership die around him, and had counted it, coldly, the way you count a battle — Tlacotzin had watched him do it — and had known for weeks that it did not come out, and had gone on anyway, because there was one thing left that a beaten king could still decide, which was whether he broke. He had decided he would not. That was the whole of his kingship now: the refusal. The strength of the Mexica had always been many things — the tribute, the temple, the terror of the name — and it had come down, in this young man in this canoe, to the last virtue a defeated people has, which is the refusal to bend, and Tlacotzin knelt beside it and understood he was watching the final act of a two-hundred-year kingship, out on the open water, in the flat afternoon light, with eight paddles and a promise he could not keep. The young men bent to the paddles until Tlacotzin could hear the breath sobbing in them, boys really, the last of a warrior order, and one of them was weeping as he paddled and did not slacken, and the reeds came no closer, and the pale ship came on. "Faster," he said, low, to the young men, and they had nothing faster; they were already spending everything they had. The pale ship came on across the water and the gap closed the way water closes over a dropped stone, and Tlacotzin knelt in the stern with his hands open on his knees and did the only thing left to a councillor whose counsel is finished, which is to compose his face. Beside him the Speaker had gone very still. He had put back the cloth that hid him and was looking at the ship coming, not down, not away, and his young face had on it nothing at all — not fear, which would have been human, and not hope, which would have been a lie — only the flat attention of a man watching a thing he had counted and knows the sum of. The ship's side turned and there was a single flat crack of a gun across the water, a warning shot, the ball skipping once on the flat lake and throwing up a rope of white, and one of the young paddlers cried out and the canoe yawed and lost its line, and then the high side was over them, a wall of dark planking sliding alongside, and Spanish faces looking down, and a crossbow levelled, and a voice shouting something none of them understood, and the young men shipped their paddles because there was nothing else to do with them, and the canoe rocked under the shadow of the ship and stopped, and it was over, all of it, that fast, on the flat bright water with the reeds a bowshot away. Tlacotzin looked at the Speaker. And Cuauhtémoc stood up in the rocking canoe — carefully, a young man with a lord's balance — and did not wait to be dragged or named or taken. He looked up at the Spaniard who seemed to be the captain of the ship, a hard-faced man staring down at his catch not quite believing it, and he pointed to the knife at the man's own belt, and he spoke; and Tlacotzin, who knew what he was saying though the strangers did not, felt the last of his kingdom go out of him like breath. I have done what a man could do for my city, the Speaker was telling the stranger, in the plain unbending tongue of a warrior who has lost. I could not save it. Now take that dagger there, at your side, and kill me with it, here, as you would kill a man — because I am done, and I would rather die by your hand than live to be shown. And the stranger, understanding only the gesture and not the words, did not draw the knife. He shook his head. He wanted the Speaker alive. Of course he did. A dead king is a grief; a living king is a thing you can put on a rope and walk through a plaza. And Tlacotzin, kneeling in the taken canoe on the taken lake, understood that the young man had asked for the one mercy the strangers would not spend, and had been refused it, and that this — not the walls, not the water, not the ninety-three days — this was the fall: the moment the last free man in the valley asked to die on his feet and was told, no, you will live, and be useful. So who lives, and who dies, when a whole world ends in an afternoon — and is the one they let live any freer than the one they will not let die? This is Flower and Song — history, lived from the inside. Tonight: the fall. Episode eight. That's a conch — the atecocolli, blown from the high temple to mark the watches over the greatest city in the Americas. For two hundred years it told a quarter of a million people, on their island in the lake, one single thing at each turn of the day: the world is turning as it should, and we are keeping it turning. It sounded when the strangers first came off the eastern sea, and it went on sounding. It sounded through the massacre in the temple court, and through the night the strangers were driven bleeding into the water, and through the winter the sickness took two of every five, and it did not stop. Tonight it stops. Tonight the ninety-three days run out, and the ring draws shut, and the greatest city in the Americas becomes a ruin of the unburied in the space of an afternoon — and every road the whole story has walked comes to its end at once: the man who lost his gods and kept the watch, the woman who carried the war in her mouth, the soldier who came for gold and could not stop looking, and the ally who marched to end an empire and lived to taste the cure. When the world ends, some meet it on their feet and some bend to live through it, and both are a kind of courage and both are a kind of loss, and this story will not sort them for you. So — listen. In the last free wedge of the city, in the grey before that same dawn, Chimalli stood among the people he had left to defend and counted them the way a man counts coins he knows will not be enough. There was perhaps a fifth of the city still standing, and it was all crammed into Tlatelolco in the north, the sister-city, the great market-quarter where once the roar of eighty thousand traders had been the loudest sound in the world and where now the loudest sound was coughing. They were packed into the plazas and the roofless houses and along the canal-edges, the last of a people, and they were dying where they sat — of the thirst, because the sweet water had been cut two moons ago and the lake was brack and foul; of the flux the brack water gave them; of the sickness that had never fully left since the winter, the huey cocoliztli, the great dying, that put the sores on them and took them in their heaps; and of plain hunger, because a besieged island grows nothing, and they had eaten the dogs and the lake-flies' eggs and the bark and the leather, and now they ate what there is no word for. Chimalli walked among them in the grey and they did not look up. A general in a war-suit is a thing to look up at when there is a war to win. There was no war left to win. There was only the manner of the losing. An old woman was grinding at a metate against a wall, in the middle of it all, working a few grains of maize she had got from somewhere into a paste with the same slow patient stroke her mother had taught her, because it was the thing her hands knew and there was nothing else her hands could do that mattered, and a working city and a dying one both need someone to grind the maize. Near her a priest of some small dead temple sat with three children who were not his, keeping them quiet with an old counting-song about the days, touching each small head in turn as he named the day-signs, and Chimalli slowed as he passed, because the song was one his own mother had sung, and the priest looked up at him — at the war-suit, at the club, at the general — with no hope in his face and no reproach either, only a kind of terrible courtesy, and inclined his head to Chimalli the way you salute a man doing a hard thing, and went back to the children and the days. Nobody in the wedge asked Chimalli to save them. That was the mercy of it, and the unbearable part: they had stopped asking. They only wanted, in the way of people at the end, not to be alone while it happened, and to keep their small useless ceremonies going as long as there was breath — the grinding, the counting-song, the watch. He had sent his own out at first light. He had stood in the dark with his wife Xóchitl, who had not wept, being a potter's daughter and past weeping, and with his son Tozca, who was seventeen now and wanted to stay and fight and had the calmécac still on him, the straight back and the careful speech of the lordly school Chimalli himself had never been allowed — the school Chimalli had spent captures and blood and a whole life's orthodoxy to buy the boy a place in, so that his son would be a lord where he had been a farmer. And Chimalli had put his two hands on the boy's shoulders and told him the thing that was hardest to say, which was: go. Go with your mother, out along the causeway with the leaving, and do not fight, and do not die here for a thing that is already dead; live, and be in the world that is coming, whatever it is, because someone of mine must be in it. The boy had not understood — how could he, raised on the doctrine his father no longer held — and had gone, white-faced, ashamed, out into the grey toward the causeway where the strangers were letting the starving file out to the mainland to die more slowly somewhere else. Chimalli did not know if they had reached it. He would not know. That was the price of sending them: he had traded the knowing for the chance. He touched the obsidian edge of his club, the old gesture, the thing he did before he spoke in council or moved in a fight, and found that it meant nothing anymore, that it was only a man touching a stone, and he did it anyway, because a man keeps his gestures after he has lost the reasons for them, the way he keeps the watch. There was a boy with him, a real boy, sixteen, from the telpochcalli, the commoners' house Chimalli had come up through himself — Tepin, a slinger's son with a slinger's quick hands and a face still round with a childhood the war had not quite finished eating. He was the last of Chimalli's command. There had been a division once, four hundred men; there had been Cuextli, his second, twenty years at his side, drowned in the boats a moon ago; there had been the others, gone one at a time into the water and the fire and the drum. Now there was Tepin, who followed him because a boy needs someone to follow and there was no one else left worth it, and who kept, Chimalli had noticed, a little clay whistle on a cord at his neck and did not know that Chimalli had seen him press it to his lips in the night and not blow it, only hold it, the way a smaller child holds a thing from home.
Chimalli: Stay by me today. Whatever comes, you stay in my shadow and you do what I do, and when I tell you to run, you run, and you do not look back to see if I am coming. Do you hear me.
Tepin: I hear you, tlacatéccatl. I will not run.
Chimalli: You will if I say it. There is a difference between a boy who will not run and a man who will not run, and the difference is that the man knows what it costs and pays it on purpose and the boy is only afraid of being shamed. I am not going to let you die for your shame. If I send you, you go.
Bram: And the boy nodded, not understanding, the way Tozca had not understood, the way the young never understand the old men who have stopped believing and go on anyway; and Chimalli looked past him at the grey water where, out beyond the last houses, he could already see the ships gathering, the pale wings coming together in a line, and behind the water on all three shores the fires of the host that was tens of thousands strong, waiting for the light to come up so they could finish it. He had counted it. He had counted it the way the young Speaker counted it, and it did not come out. And he had decided, in the cold courtyard in the winter when he lost his gods and did not lose his city, the only thing there was left to decide, which the boy beside him would learn today if he lived long enough: that a defence you have counted and lost is not for winning. It is for the manner of the going. He set his shield on his arm and stood in the grey and kept the last watch, and waited for the light, and was not afraid, because fear is for men who still hope, and he had put that down with the rest. In the allied camp on the Tacuba causeway, in the same grey light, Beltrán de Coria sat on an upturned water-jar and counted his crossbow bolts, which was what he did with his hands when the rest of him was afraid. Thirty-one. He had counted them the night before and got thirty-one and he counted them again now and got thirty-one, and the counting was not about the bolts. A man cannot make his hands hold still by telling them to. He can give them a job. Thirty-one bolts, a sword going to rust no matter how he oiled it, a buckler dented past truing, two years of somebody else's sun on the back of his neck, and, somewhere at the bottom of his pack under the mouldy tortillas, a knotted rag with his share of gold in it, which was less than the songs had promised and heavier than it looked, and which he had stopped taking out to look at, because a man who takes his gold out to look at it in a place like this is a man telling the gods where it is. "You are counting them again," said Arbenga, the Greek, without opening his eyes. Arbenga was a gunner off a Genoese ship who had washed up in the company the way a Greek washes up anywhere, by being too useful to drown and too foreign to trust, and he was the nearest thing Beltrán had to a friend, which in this company meant a man who would rob your corpse gently. "There are the same number as last night. There will be the same number when they kill you. Bolts do not breed in the dark, Coria, whatever they do in Extremadura."
Beltran: In Extremadura we have nothing to breed and plenty of dark, so we make do. Thirty-one. It is a tidy number. A man could do worse than die owing God a round thirty and one on top for luck.
Bram: But he did not laugh, and neither did the Greek, because this was the morning and they both knew it was the morning, and a joke on the morning is not the same animal as a joke the night before. Beltrán looked out from the causeway at the thing he had stopped being able to not-see, which was the size of it. All summer he had watched it and all summer it had refused to fit in his head. The famous story — the story he already knew, in his bones, he would tell some day by a fire in Coria if he lived, the story of the daring few, Cortés and his handful of bold Castilians throwing down an empire — that story was standing all around him this morning giving itself the lie. He counted, because counting was his prayer. He counted the fires. Not the Spanish fires; the Spanish he could count on his fingers and his neighbours' fingers, a few hundred men worn down to bone and quartan fever. He counted the other fires, the fires of the host, the allies, and gave it up, the way you give up counting stars: the Tlaxcalteca in their tens of thousands, the Texcocans who had come over with a whole lake-kingdom behind them, the Huexotzinca, the men from towns whose names he could not say, ringing the dying city on every causeway and every reed-bank, more warriors than he had ever seen in one place, more than he had known were in the world. That was the truth of it, and Beltrán the foot-soldier had worked it out long before the captains would ever write it down: they were not a few hundred Castilians conquering an empire. They were a few hundred Castilians riding on the top of the biggest Indian war anyone in the valley had seen in a hundred years — a war all these tens of thousands had wanted for generations, against the tax-collector on the island who had fed their sons to his sun — and the strangers were the edge on the axe, the steel and the horses and the thundering guns, and the axe itself, the whole vast weight of it, was Indian, and always had been. The captains would go home and tell it the other way, he already knew, because the daring few is a better story to tell a king than we were the last man onto a boat that fifty thousand angry neighbours were already rowing. But Beltrán had counted the fires. And he sat on his water-jar in the grey with his thirty-one bolts and his rag of gold and waited, the way the whole ring waited, for enough light to go up the streets one last time. When the light came, the whole ring moved, and Beltrán moved with it, into the last quarter of the city, and what the streets held was worse than the fighting. He had told himself for ninety-three days that he was ready for the inside of the city when it finally broke, and he was not, because there is no readying a man for it. They went in along the raised causeways and the filled canals the allied porters had spent weeks packing with rubble and the wreck of houses and, he made himself not think about it too hard, with worse than rubble, so that the horses could cross where once only canoes had gone; and they went house by house, roofless house by roofless house, and the fighting itself, when it came, was almost the easy part. Because the defenders still came. That was the thing that unmanned him, more than any wound: that in a city of the dead and the dying, out of the doorways of houses full of corpses, thin men with obsidian clubs and no war-suits left and faces like skulls still came at them, screaming the war-cry out of throats too dry to make it properly, and had to be killed, one at a time, by men as tired as they were, in the close reeking dark of the packed streets. They fought over nothing — over ten feet of canal-fill, over a broken wall — as if it were the whole world, which for them it was. One of them got in close on Beltrán at a corner, a young one, quick even starved, and there was a bad half-minute of it in the reeking dark — the obsidian coming at his head and Beltrán taking it high on the buckler so the volcanic glass shattered against the boss and laid his cheek open with a fly of splinters, and his own blade going in short and hard the way you are taught, under the arm, twice, before the boy would go down. He killed him. The boy weighed nothing; Beltrán felt the ribs through the boy's own body when they came together; and the boy was still trying to bite him as he died, a starved child biting at a stranger's steel gauntlet, and Beltrán put him down on the fouled stones and stood over him with his sword dripping and his own cheek running blood into his mouth and was sick against the wall, and then wiped the blade on his thigh and went on, because the file went on, and there was another doorway, and out of it, in a moment, another one of them would come. That was the morning. Not a battle. A slaughter that fought back, one skeleton at a time, all the way up the streets. And between the killing, the streets held the dead. He had smelled it across the water for weeks, the sweet-and-rotten wall of it that told the whole camp what was happening on the island; but smelling a thing across the water and walking through it are two different tradesmen, and now he walked through it. They lay where they had died and where they had been dragged, in the houses and along the canals and heaped at the roots of the walls: the sick, who had died of the great dying with the sores still on them; the starved, who had gone down to nothing and then gone out; the children, who go first in a famine and last in the memory. In some houses whole families sat where they had settled to die together, and the strangers and their allies climbed over them to fight in the next street. There was a thing Beltrán heard a soldier of the company say years later, when they were old and telling it, and knew to be exactly true because he had lived it: that in the last days you could not walk through Tlatelolco without treading on the bodies of the dead. He had come for gold. He had gold, at the bottom of his pack, in a rag. And he went up the streets of the greatest city there was, treading on the dead of it, killing the skeletons who defended it, and he kept his eyes moving and his billhook up and did not let himself look at any one face for longer than it took to be sure it could not hurt him — because a man who stops and looks, in a street like that, does not get up and go on, and the file went on, and Beltrán de Coria went on with it, and told himself, one more time, the way he had told himself at Cholula and at the branding and at every place the road had cost him a piece he did not have the courage to miss, that a soldier only carries it; the great men decide it; it is not on the man who only carries it. He had been telling himself that for two years. It was getting harder to hear over the flies. At the Spanish command, in a taken lord's hall with the roof burned off it and the sky standing in for a ceiling, Marina waited by Cortés with the day's terms ready in her mouth. She had been the tongue of this war for two years, and she had learned that a war ends the way it is fought, through her; that when the strangers wanted a thing from the island they said it to her in their hard Castilian, and she turned it in the half-beat's pause that was the only thing in all this that was hers, and gave it to the island in the courtly reverential Nahuatl of a rank she had been born to and sold out of; and that in that half-beat, more days than she let herself count, she had softened a threat here and sharpened a demand there, and had long since stopped telling herself it was an accident. For three days now Cortés had been sending her forward under the sign of truce to the young Speaker's people with the same offer, and for three days it had come back the same. He said it again this morning, flat, a man tired of asking, while a servant rang a small hand-bell to bring the captains in, and the thin bright sound of the bell was an obscene thing in that place, a little silver noise of an ordered world.
Cortes: Tell them again. Tell them I have no wish to destroy what is left — that the lord Cuauhtémoc has only to come to me and it stops, today, this hour; that I will treat him with the honour due a great prince, and his people will be spared what is coming if he yields the city now. Tell them plainly. I would rather have the city than the ash of it.
Bram: And Marina rendered it, and heard, as she always did, the several things under the one thing. She heard that he meant it — he did not want the ash; a ruin pays no tribute and grants no lordships, and Cortés counted the future the way other men counted their beads. And she heard the other thing, the thing he did not say and she did not add, which was that it would not stop, that the host wanted its sack and would have it, that "spared what is coming" was a door already nailed shut. She had carried honest terms and dishonest ones and had learned that from where she stood you could not always tell which was which until afterward, and that it did not, in the end, change what she did, which was to carry them. She was the voice the war ran through. She had made herself that, out of nothing, out of a slave's one untakeable asset, so that she would never again be one of twenty women handed across a beach; and she had got exactly what she wanted, which was to be indispensable, to be the one thing that could not be replaced, and the cost of it was standing all around her, a city dying in heaps, half of it hers by blood, and passing, some of it, by increments, through her own mouth. She did not look away from that. She had decided, a long time ago now, in the winter of the occupied city, that she would not lie to herself about it even if she lied to everyone else. She would carry the terms. She would live. And she would know exactly what she had done, because the knowing was the last thing that was hers, and she would not give it away for comfort like the rest of them did.
Cortes: Marina. You are far away.
Marina: I am here, my lord. I was choosing the words. In their tongue a thing said to a prince must be said in the right register, or it is an insult and he cannot hear it. You want him to hear it. So I will say it correctly.
Bram: Which was true, and was also, she thought, watching her own reflection in the burnished shield a servant had set by the door — the one still figure in a room of moving men, exactly as she had always been — the truest thing she could say about her whole life: that she had spent it choosing the words, in the register that would be heard, so that the powerful men who thought they commanded the room would say what she had shaped for them to say and never know she had shaped it. It was very nearly power. And it was about to have its last and largest use, because down in the plaza there was a stir, and a runner came, and the thing Cortés had wanted for ninety-three days had finally happened out on the water, and they were bringing it up the temple stair to him now. They brought the last lord of the Mexica up onto a rooftop where Cortés had set his standard, above the taken plaza, with the whole ruin of the greatest city in the Americas spread out below and behind him in the afternoon light — the drowned gardens, the thrown-down towers, the canals gone to mud and flies — so that the surrender, when it came, would be witnessed by the thing itself. Marina stood at Cortés's shoulder in her place, the place she had made, and watched them bring Cuauhtémoc across the roof: a young man, soaked to the waist from the lake, his fine mantle stripped and a plain one thrown over him, walking between two Spanish captains with his back very straight and his hands loose at his sides, looking at nothing, or rather looking at everything with the flat even attention of a man who has already done all his fearing and has none left to spend on this. Cortés received him standing, and — Marina watched this and filed it, the way she filed everything — was courteous, warm even, the gambler's warmth that costs nothing and buys everything; he made the young man a small bow, and had a mat brought, and food, and behaved for the length of a breath as though two princes were meeting on a matter of state and not as though one of them owned the smoking corpse of the other's world. They had brought others up with him — a knot of the last great lords of the empire, the ones taken in the same net, the young Speaker's own cihuacoatl among them, an old man with a councillor's stillness who had plainly wept and plainly stopped, standing now behind his king with his face composed for the last time in a long life of composing it. Marina read them all in a glance, the way she read every room: the exhausted lords, the wary captains, the servants with the food no one would eat, and Cortés at the centre of it doing the thing Cortés did better than any man she had ever stood beside, which was to make a naked act of power look like a courtesy. She had watched him do it for two years — to the Tlaxcalteca, to Motecuhzoma, to his own mutinous men — and she knew the warmth for exactly what it was, a tool, the most useful one he owned, and she knew, because she had the same tool and had made her whole survival out of it, that a thing can be a tool and be, in some corner of the man, also real, and that you could not always tell which corner a thing came from, and that it did not, in the end, change what the thing did. And then he turned to Marina to make it real, because nothing between these two men could be real except through her; and the whole of the war, all of it, the two years and the tens of thousands dead and the city on the water, funnelled down in that moment to the space between her mouth and the young Speaker's ear, and she was the only road it could travel. She had spent her life becoming that road. She had made herself, out of a slave's one untakeable thing, into the single point in the whole war that everything had to pass through, so that she could never again be one of twenty women handed across a beach — and here, on a rooftop over a burning city, was the largest toll that road would ever take. Somewhere below and far off, the last great skin drum of the temple, the huehuetl, the one Bernal's people called the dismal drum of Huichilobos, gave a single note and stopped, cut off in the middle, and did not sound again; and in the silence after it Cuauhtémoc spoke first, before Cortés, before her, which no captive is supposed to do, and he spoke to the stranger through her, his eyes on Cortés, and Marina carried it, and it was the plainest thing she had ever had to say.
Cuauhtemoc: Malintzin. Tell your lord this, exactly, and do not soften it, because I have watched you do that for two years and I will know. Tell him: I have done everything I was bound to do in defence of my city and my people. I could do no more. I am brought by force before him, a prisoner. Let him take the dagger he wears at his belt and strike me dead with it now, at once — for I am a lord, and I would die as one, and I will not be led alive through the wreck of my city for his soldiers to point at. That is what I ask. Tell him.
Bram: And Marina, who had softened a hundred things and sharpened a hundred more, stood with the young man's words in her mouth and understood that this was the one thing in the whole war she must not shape at all — that his defiance was the last possession he had, the only thing the strangers had not been able to take, exactly as her voice had once been the only thing no owner could take from her — and that to soften it, to make it easier for the room, would be the truest theft of the whole afternoon. So she gave it to Cortés straight, in the plain hard Castilian of the camp, the register of a man speaking to a man, every stone of it: he says he has done all a man could do; he asks you to kill him now with your own knife, as a lord, and not to lead him living through the ruin. And she watched it land on Cortés, and watched the gambler do the sum — a dead king is a grief the valley will nurse into a rising; a living king on a leash is a seal on the conquest, a thing you show the wavering towns — and watched him decline, gently, with that same warmth, to spend the one mercy the young man wanted.
Cortes: Tell him he has defended his city like a brave man, and that a brave man has nothing to be ashamed of in a defeat like this one — that I honour him for it, and that he will be treated with all honour. Tell him I will not kill him. He has too much yet to do for his people, living, to be permitted to die for his pride.
Bram: And Marina turned the refusal into the courtly reverential Nahuatl that the moment demanded, the tecpillahtolli of the pipiltin she had learned before she was nine in a lord's house on the Coatzacoalcos border before her own mother sold her into the dark — the high beautiful register of a rank she had lost, spent now, at the very end, to tell a king that he would not be allowed to die. She heard her own voice do it perfectly. And she saw the young man understand, and receive it, and set it down beside all the other things he had had to receive that day, and turn his flat unbroken face toward the ruin of his city below as if to say goodbye to it in the one moment he would be given; and Marina understood, standing in the place she had made for herself with two years of exactly this, that she had just done the largest thing her voice would ever do. She had spoken the surrender of the empire. The end of a world had come out of her mouth, in the right register, correctly, so that it could be heard — and she had not softened it and she had not stopped it, and there had never really been a moment, she saw now, when she was only the tongue. She looked at the young Speaker looking at his city, and for the length of the huehuetl's silence she let herself feel the whole of it, the entire unbearable weight of what her survival had cost and would go on costing, and then she folded it away, because she was not finished being useful and the useful do not get to grieve on the roof in front of the captains. She was Marina. She was indispensable. She was alive. And the city was not. Down in the burning market-edge of Tlatelolco, while the lords made their courtesies on the roof, the sack was already old. Citlali of Tlaxcala, who had provisioned the host that did the real fighting for two years, who had carried grain and bandages over the passes and counted the dead of a dozen fights and buried a husband the Mexica sun had eaten ten years before any of this began, moved through the smoke of the falling city with a quartermaster's eye and a widow's hard heart and watched the thing she had marched four hundred miles to see. Tenochtitlan was burning. The empire that had penned her free people in for four generations, poor in salt and cotton, rich only in grievance and in the memory of every son walked up those temple steps — the tax-collector on the island, the machine that called the eating of her people a sacred game — was ending in front of her, exactly as she had wanted it to since before the strangers were born, and she had helped, with her own two hands and her whole clear-eyed will, to make it happen. She would do it again. She told herself that, walking through the smoke, and it was true, and it was not enough. Because the win did not taste the way she had carried it in her mouth for ten years. She had thought it would taste like justice and it tasted like ash, and the ash was made of specific things she had not let herself picture from the passes: the allied men, her own people among them, going through the houses of the dead for anything gold or worth carrying, which was the ancient right of the taker and she could not fault it and it turned her stomach; and the strangers' tally-men already moving through it too, cooler, marking the good-looking women and the strong men with a stroke of chalk, a brand to come, and — she saw this and something in her ledger would not balance again after it — waving the Tlaxcalteca warriors aside from the best of the plunder with the flat of a hand, the way you wave off a dog that has done its work, because the strangers had begun already, on the very first afternoon, to count her people as less than the enemy her people had just died to help them kill. She had healed men for thirty years — closed wounds, set bones, sat with the dying — and her hands hated this the way a healer's hands hate a thing done badly on purpose. She passed a Mexica man dying against a wall of a gut-wound no one would waste water on, and her hands wanted to go to him out of thirty years of habit, and she made them stay at her sides, and it cost her, because a body that has spent its life closing wounds does not stop wanting to at a border drawn by a grudge. She had told herself, on the passes, that the Mexica were the enemy, whole and simple, the machine that ate her sons; and she had believed it, and it had been true, and it had also been, she understood now, walking through their dying children, a thing you can only fully believe from four hundred miles away. Up close, an enemy is a man against a wall with a gut-wound, and a woman grinding maize for children who will not live to eat it, and a girl of four standing in a lane waiting to be found. She kept her hands at her sides and walked, and priced it, and could not make the number come out, and did not yet know that in a little while she would stop trying. And then, in the crush and the panic of the crowd being driven out of a collapsing lane, there was a child. A Mexica child, a girl, four or five, in the general terror of the crowd separated from whoever had been carrying her, standing in the open lane with the smoke going over her and the looters coming, doing the one thing a small child does, which is to stand still exactly where she was last held and wait to be found, in a place where being found meant a brand, a rope, a stranger's cook-fire, or a blade from someone who had a Mexica reason to hate a Mexica child. Citlali stopped. Every line of her own long grudge stood up in her and told her the truth of it, which was that this was a child of the people who had walked her husband up the steps and called it flowers, that a Tlaxcalteca does not save Mexica children, that she had ten years of a specific dead man's reason to step over this girl and go on. And she looked at the child, and the child, in the way of a terrified small thing, looked back at her — the one steady grown face in a world of smoke and running — and did not know she was supposed to be an enemy, and lifted her arms. The child did not know she was Tlaxcalteca. That was the thing. To the child she was not an enemy or an ally or a marcher on a ten-year grudge; she was a grown woman who had stopped, in a world where all the grown people were running, and grown people who stop are the whole of a small child's hope. The child had no politics. The child had a mother somewhere in the smoke, dead or lost or driven out, and had done the only thing a very small person can do, which is to stay where she was last held and lift her arms to the first face that steadied; and it happened to be the face of a woman whose husband the child's people had walked up a temple and cut open ten years ago and called it flowers. Citlali knew all of that in the half-beat she stood there, knew it precisely, the whole shape of the grudge and the debt and the reason, the way she knew the weight of a grain-sack by looking; and the child went on holding up her arms in the smoke, and the looters came on down the lane, and the tally-men's chalk was two streets off, and the thing had about the length of one breath left in which it could still go either way. Citlali did the arithmetic. She was a quartermaster; she did arithmetic the way she breathed; she had balanced the ledger of this whole war against her husband's death for ten years and made it come out. And she stood in the smoke with the child's arms up and found, for the first time in the whole campaign, that she could not do the sum. It would not go. The numbers she had lived by — a Tlaxcalteca son against a Mexica child, the grudge against the grief, the win against its cost — simply would not resolve, and under them, where the arithmetic usually was, there was only a woman of forty who had closed the eyes of a hundred men and delivered as many babies and knew, in her hands before her head, the difference between a thing you carry and a thing you leave. She picked the child up. She put her under her own wide mantle, against her body, where the tally-men's chalk and her own people's grudge could not see her, and she gave her water from her own gourd, the brack lake-water everyone was dying of, because it was what there was; and the child drank and shook and pressed her face into the Tlaxcalteca weave that marked Citlali's people apart from her own, and did not know, and Citlali held her and did not say a word, because there were no words for a Tlaxcalteca doing this, and the only witness was the child, and a child is the one witness who cannot testify against you and the one you can least bear to have. This is not a partnership, she thought, holding the enemy's daughter in the smoke of the enemy's city that she had helped to burn. This is a burning, and we carried the wood. I would do it again. And I will carry this too, both of them, all the way to whatever the strangers make of us next, and I will not let anyone see me do either. She stood in the lane with the child against her heart until the crush moved on, and then she carried her out of the city, west, toward the mountains and Tlaxcala, and told no one, ever, and did not, that day or after, manage to make the numbers come out. There was an hour, near the end, before the last storm went up the temple, when the strangers tried one final time to make the holdouts yield, and they sent the tongue forward to do it, because they always sent the tongue. So Marina walked out along the rubble line under the sign of truce, a white cloth on a shaft carried before her, into the narrow contested ground between the taken city and the last knot of men who would not give it up — and the man who came out from the other side to meet her, because the young Speaker was already taken and the great lords were dead or fled and there had to be someone, was Chimalli. She knew him at once, though they had never been given each other's names. She had seen him across the interpreter's pause a dozen times in two years — in the occupied palace, across the council floor, at the edge of a hundred rooms her voice ran through — the big grave Mexica general who watched the strangers' hands the way she watched a room's power, the one man on the island who had always, she felt, seen exactly what she was doing and never once looked away from it. And she saw what two years had done to him. He had been a made-noble at the peak of a working world; he was a gaunt man in a jaguar war-suit gone ragged, the pelt half its old glory, holding an obsidian club too heavy now for the arm that held it, with a boy at his shoulder and nothing else behind him but the temple stair and the smoke. And he knew her too. She saw that land. She gave him the offer, in the courtly reverential Nahuatl of the rank they had both, in their different ways, been made and unmade by — the honourable surrender, the sparing of the last people, the treatment due a brave man; the same words she had given the Speaker; the door Cortés swore was open and she knew was nailed. And Chimalli listened to it, this Nahua woman wearing the strangers' purpose, delivering the end of his world to him in the most beautiful register their shared tongue owned, and when she was done he did not answer the offer at all. He answered her.
Chimalli: You speak it very well. The high tongue. You were born to a lord's house, then, before — I hear it. So was I not; I climbed to it, capture by capture, and I have watched it fall, and now here we are, the two of us, the last two people in the valley who can say a beautiful thing correctly, saying it to each other over the top of a grave. You carry their words. I have watched you carry them for two years. You are the best I have ever seen at the thing you do, and the thing you do has helped kill everything I am.
Marina: Yes.
Chimalli: You do not argue it.
Marina: No. I was given away by my own mother in the dark and told to the town as dead, before I was a woman, and I learned the one thing no owner can take from a person is what is inside her mouth. So I have used it. To live. Everything I have, I have because I would not be handed on again like a thing, and the price of not being handed on is standing all around us. I know exactly what it cost. I do not tell myself it was an accident, and I will not tell you it was, because you would hear the lie, the way I would. You are the only one who ever could.
Bram: And they stood a moment in the smoke on the rubble line, the woman who bent and the man who would not, each looking at the other across the last pause the war would ever give them — and it was, Marina understood, the truest recognition of her whole life, truer than anything with the man she belonged beside, because this was the one person who saw the whole of her and required her to be neither traitor nor victim, only what she was: a person who had chosen to live, at this price, and knew it. And she saw in him the thing she had given up to do it — the certainty, the belonging, the willingness to be ended rather than translated — and understood that he was the road she had not taken, and she was his, and that neither of them could have walked the other's road and lived with themselves.
Marina: Come in. That is the offer, and I will make it as real as I can make anything, and I can make more real than most. The Speaker is taken and honoured; you are a great captain; there is a place for men like you in what is coming. You do not have to die on that stair for a thing that is already gone. I bent. I am alive. You could bend. It is not the shame you think it is; it is only survival, and the dead cannot be served, and the living can.
Bram: And Chimalli looked at her for a long moment, and there was in his ruined face something almost like tenderness, the tenderness of a man for the one enemy who has understood him, and he shook his head, once.
Chimalli: No. And not because I have not thought it — I have thought it every night since the winter, when I knelt in a cold court and lost my gods and found I still had my city. You are right that the dead cannot be served. I stopped serving the dead a long time ago; I do not think the sun is fed by us anymore, I do not think it was ever fed by us, and I will die in an hour still sounding a conch to a sky I believe is empty. But you have the thing backwards, tongue. You think a man defends the city because he believes the sky needs it. I defend it because it is mine, and a man does not translate himself out of the one thing that is his to keep breathing on someone else's terms. You will live, and carry a world in you that did not exist before this war, and I honour it — it is a kind of courage and I could not do it. I will die, and be nothing, and it is a kind of courage and you could not do it. Go back to them. Tell your lord the last general on the stair thanks him for the offer and declines. And — go carefully, out there, in the world you are keeping. It will not be kind to the ones who helped it. I have watched them wave off the Tlaxcalteca from the plunder already. You are Nahua, whatever you have made of yourself. They will remember that longer than they remember what you did for them.
Bram: And he turned, and went back up toward the temple stair with the boy at his shoulder, and did not look back to see if she was watching, and Marina stood on the rubble line with the truce-cloth in her hand and the whole answered weight of it settling onto her, and then she folded her face away, because she was not finished being useful, and walked back to tell the strangers that the last man would not come in. She did not weep. She had learned not to, before she was a woman. But she carried what he had said about the world she was keeping for the rest of her life, and found, in the years that proved him exactly right, that she had loved him — the only way she had ever been allowed to love anyone, across a pause, in a language dying in both their mouths, each the other's road not taken.
