Bram: On the morning the lake changed sides, Chimalli stood at the western end of the causeway in the grey before dawn, his thumb on the obsidian edge of his club the way another man tells a rosary, and watched the water he had trusted his whole life become a thing he could no longer trust at all. He had defended this city from the causeways for a year, and knew their arithmetic the way he knew his own hands. The city sat in the middle of a lake, joined to the shore by three raised roads, and every one of those roads could be cut — the bridges lifted, the gaps opened, the enemy left to drown in them while the canoes rose out of the reeds on both sides. That was the city's oldest strength, older than his grandfather: you could not bring an army across a lake. The water was the wall. The strangers had learned it on the night they were driven bleeding into it, and had kept off the causeways since, and the water had held. And then, in the grey light, out past the last houses of Iztapalapa where the open lake began, something moved on the water that had no right to be there. It was too big to be a canoe and it was under sail, a great pale wing of canvas leaning in the dawn wind, and behind it another, and another, coming out onto the open water in a line — thirteen of them, long-hulled and high-sided, the strange ships the strangers had built somewhere out beyond the passes and carried down to the lake in pieces on the backs of ten thousand allies and put together on the shore where the Mexica could not reach them. Brigantines. Chimalli did not have the word. He had only the shape of them, low and fast and wrong, cutting the water his canoes owned as if they owned it instead, and the cold understanding, arriving all at once, of what they were for. He watched the canoe-fleet go out to meet them, because of course it did — a hundred war-canoes, the pride of the lake, the crews who had drowned an empire's worth of strangers on the Sad Night, sliding out fast and low across the grey water toward the pale wings, and Chimalli's chest lifted despite everything, because this was the thing the Mexica knew how to do, this was the water answering, and for the length of a held breath he let himself believe the water would hold again. Then the leading ship turned its side to the fleet, and there was a rolling crash and a bloom of grey powder-smoke along its flank, and the front of the canoe-fleet simply came apart. He had heard the strangers' cannon before, in the streets, in the close work, where its terror was as much its own as its killing. He had never heard it out here, on the open water, where a single ship could turn broadside and empty its whole side into a packed fleet with nowhere to scatter, and where the smoke rolled out over the lake as if the lake itself were burning. Canoes went over. Men went into the water. The pale wings came on through the smoke and the wreckage without slowing, and their sides broke open again, and the fleet — the fleet that owned the lake — broke and ran for the reeds, and the strange ships turned and ran them down. He had known the ships were coming. Everyone in the city had known, all winter — the word had come over the passes with the refugees and the spies, that the strangers were building boats somewhere out beyond the mountains, whole ships taken apart into planks and nails and masts and carried down toward the lake on the backs of ten thousand allied porters, to be put together on a shore the Mexica could not reach. The council had heard it and argued it and half of them had not believed it, because it was an absurd thing, an army carrying a navy over a mountain range on its back, the kind of thing only a people with a hundred thousand pairs of hands to spend would even think of; and Chimalli had believed it, because he had learned not to disbelieve anything about the strangers merely because it was impossible, and had still not been ready for the sight of it, because knowing a thing is coming and watching it arrive on the water at dawn are two different woundings. Chimalli stood on the causeway with the finest club in the world in his hand and watched the water stop being a wall. It took less than an hour. By full light the thirteen ships stood out on the open lake wherever they pleased, and the canoes that dared the open water died, and the ones that did not stayed in among the houses where the ships could not follow, which meant the lake beyond the houses was no longer the city's at all. The road four-abreast in the open, the water on either side that belonged to the Mexica — it was inverted now, all of it. The water was the enemy's floor. They could go anywhere on it. They could land men behind any causeway, cut any bridge from the far side, choke off any road. The moat that had made the city unconquerable for two hundred years had become, in the space of one dawn, the broad and open road the enemy would ride in on — and Chimalli, who read the instant before a thing breaks, stood in the wind off the water and read this one, and understood that the siege had not begun this morning. This morning was the moment it became a siege that could be won. He turned and went to carry the word to the young man who now wore the turquoise, and did not let his face show what the word was. This is Flower and Song — history, lived from the inside. Tonight: the slow strangling. Episode seven. That's a conch — blown from the high temple to mark the watches over the greatest city in the Americas, a quarter of a million souls on a lake, the navel of a world. It has sounded every watch of every day the city has stood, and its meaning has always been the same: the world is turning as it should, and we are keeping it turning. The strangers came off the eastern sea, and it was still sounding. The strangers were driven back into the water, and it was still sounding. Tonight the lake that kept the city alive becomes the road its enemies ride in on, and the water is cut, and the ring closes, and the conch goes on sounding over a city being ground to rubble a street at a time — and the man who has kept the watches his whole life will keep them still, for ninety-three days, without a god left to keep them for. So — listen. In the city, the water went next. It had always come from the mainland — the city sat in a lake it could not drink, the near reaches gone brackish and the whole of it too salt in a dry year to keep a child alive, and so for as long as anyone living could remember the sweet water had come in along the causeway from the springs on the mainland hill, in a channel of stone and mortar the width of a man's body, running the whole long way across the water into the heart of the city, where it filled the fountains and the canals the lords washed in and every jar in every house. It was one of the oldest wonders of the place, and the people had stopped seeing it the way you stop seeing your own breathing. Chimalli was on the causeway near the mainland end, a week after the ships came, when the strangers took the channel. He did not see the cutting itself; he saw the water stop. There was a thing the aqueduct did, a low steady voice of running water you felt in the causeway stones under your feet more than heard, and it had been there every day of his life, and then one afternoon it was not, and the stone channel ran empty and dry with a few last threads of wet drying on its floor, and the strangers held the mainland end of it with their allies and their guns, and it did not run again. They had understood the city better than the city expected a stranger to. They had not needed to storm it. They had only had to reach up and pinch shut the one thin thread of sweet water that a quarter of a million people drank, and let the lake do the rest. He thought, standing over the dry channel, of what the aqueduct had meant. It was not merely a convenience; it was the proof of the whole city, the thing that said what the Mexica were. Anyone could build a town by a river. It took a people who thought in centuries to build a city in the heart of a lake it could not drink, and then reach a long arm of worked stone all the way to the mainland springs to bring the sweet water home, and wall the salt away behind a dike a man could walk, and tame the floods with gates. Chimalli had grown up drinking that water and had never once thought about it, the way a man does not think about his own pulse; and now he stood over the empty channel and understood that the very thing that had made the city a wonder — that it lived by a single thin thread of engineered water — was the thing that would kill it, because a wonder that hangs by one thread is a wonder with a throat, and the strangers had found the throat, and closed their hand on it, and did not even have to squeeze. The city that had bent an entire lake to its will now drank the lake's brack. Chimalli watched it happen ward by ward over the days that followed. First the fountains stopped, and then the stored jars went dry, and then the people went down to the canals and the lake-edge and drank what was there, because thirst does not wait, and the water there was the water the city had spent two centuries walling out of its gardens — half-salt, foul with the runoff of a besieged island where the dead were beginning not to be buried. Children sickened on it first. The healers who were left called it a flux and had nothing for it. And Chimalli, walking the causeway defences with his throat as dry as any man's, understood that the strangers had found the one wall the Mexica could not lift a bridge against: you cannot ambush thirst in a gap in a road. It comes up out of the ground under everyone at once, the general and the child and the priest, with no hand behind it and no face to strike — and he had met a thing like that before, in the winter, and he knew now the shape of what was coming, and he went on walking the defences, because the defences were still his to walk. On the day the ships came, Chimalli carried the word to the war-house, and it was a young man who heard it. Cuauhtémoc was perhaps twenty-five years old. He had been raised to the turquoise seat that winter, over a city already dying of the plague, elected tlatoani — the Speaker, the one who holds the world up in his two hands — into an office that had held up a working cosmos for two hundred years and now held up a starving island the lake had turned against. He was the third man to wear it in two years. The first had made the catastrophic bet and died a hostage; the second, the war-leader the moment finally demanded, had taken the plague after eighty days; and now the sacred seat had come to rest on a man barely out of the calmécac, in the worst hour the seat had ever known, with no cosmos left to steward and only a defence to run. Chimalli, a tlacatéccatl, a general of the war-council raised out of a farmer's calpulli on the strength of the men he had taken alive, had served the turquoise seat since long before the strangers, and he watched this youngest man to wear it hear the news of the ships without flinching, and receive it, and turn at once to what could be done, and he understood that the boy was very good at this — better, maybe, than any of them, and it would not be enough, and the boy knew it would not be enough, and did not let it into his face. Cuauhtémoc heard that the lake was lost and ordered the canals stopped with stakes and the bridges drawn and the roofs of the causeway houses loopholed for slingers; he set the rationing of the last maize; he sent runners to the coalition-towns that still wavered; he did in an afternoon the work of a man who believed the city could hold, and Chimalli, watching him, knew he believed no such thing. There came a moment, late, the two of them alone over a painted map of the causeways with the temple fires burning low outside, when the young Speaker set down the reed he was marking with and looked at the old general and said a true thing, quietly, the way a man says a thing he has decided to say exactly once.

Cuauhtemoc: They will take it, tlacatéccatl. Not this moon and maybe not the next, but they will take it. The water is gone and the lake is theirs and the towns are going over to them by the week, and I have counted it the way you count a battle, and it does not come out for us. You know this. I know this. So I want to know one thing from a man who has fought longer than I have lived. What is a defence for, when you have counted it and it does not come out?

Bram: And Chimalli, who had knelt in a cold courtyard in the winter and lost his gods and not lost his city, and who had never said that to a living soul but his wife, found that the boy had walked straight up to the edge of the thing he carried, and looked at him across it, and asked. He did not give him the doctrine. The doctrine was the sun and the debt and the world held up by blood, and Chimalli no longer believed one word of it, and would not hand a dying boy a thing he had thrown away himself.

Chimalli: It is not for winning. A defence you have counted and lost is not for winning; a man your age wants it to be for winning and it is not, and the sooner you set that down the steadier your hands will be. It is for the manner of the going. A city can go down into the dark howling and clawing and shaming itself, or it can go down with its bridges drawn and its watches kept and its Speaker on his feet, so that whatever is said of it afterward — and something is always said afterward, by someone, even of the beaten — is that it did not break, it was broken, and those are not the same word. That is what a lost defence is for. It is the last thing you get to decide. You do not get to decide whether they take the city. You get to decide what they take when they take it.

Bram: The young man looked at him a while, and then he picked the reed back up and went on marking the causeways where the bridges would be drawn, and neither of them said anything else about it. But in the morning Chimalli watched him do the thing. Cuauhtémoc went out onto a temple platform in the grey light in the full turquoise and the quetzal, before a crowd of the thin and the frightened and the grieving, the people of the greatest city in the world gone gaunt on grass-seed and brack, and he lifted his voice over them and it did not shake. He told them the lake was theirs, the city they were born of, the navel of the world, older than the strangers and their ships and their sickness, and that a people who had raised it out of a marsh with their own hands did not hand it meekly to a tax-collector's paid mob at the first hard season; he told them the causeways would hold and the young men would fight and the gods would be fed and the city would stand, and the crowd, hearing it, stood a little straighter, and a sound went up from them, a rough defiant roar out of starved throats, the first loud thing the city had made in weeks — and Chimalli, standing behind the boy where he could see the back of his neck, saw that his hands, clasped behind him where the crowd could not see, were shut so tight the knuckles had gone pale. And that, Chimalli thought, was the whole of it: a man holding a dying city up in front of him with both hands while everything in him that had counted the odds knew the count, and giving the people the certainty he did not have because it was the last gift left to give them, and hiding the cost of the giving in his own clenched fists behind his back. The people who heard him did not know they were listening to a man who had counted it and lost. And Chimalli, who had spent his whole life on the doctrine and its loud certainties, found he had more respect for the boy's hollow and deliberate one than he had ever had for his own true one. Across the water, in the strangers' lines at Coyoacán, the woman who had made the whole war speakable carried its terms without a tremor in her voice. Malintzin stood at the head of a causeway under a truce-cloth between the captain she served and the city she was made of, and rendered, in the high formal Nahuatl a lord would use to a lord, the offer the strangers wished the city to accept: that they lay down the war, that they open the causeways, that the young Speaker come out and give himself and his city into the captain's protection, and be well used. She said it beautifully. She had learned, in two years, exactly how to make a threat sound like a mercy and a mercy sound like the only sense left in the world, and the lords of the city heard the offer of their own destruction come to them in the most courteous Nahuatl any of them had heard since the court fell, out of the mouth of a woman one of them had likely owned, and they refused it, and she carried the refusal back across the wire to the captain in his own tongue, exactly, softening nothing, and did not flinch at either end.

Malintzin: My lord the captain wishes the Speaker to know that he holds him in honour, and grieves the ruin, and that all of it may end within the hour: let the causeways be opened and the lord Cuauhtémoc come out, and he and his people will be well used, and the dying will stop. My lord asks only that you not make him take by force a thing he would rather receive from your hands.

Bram: And the lords sent her back across the wire with their refusal, and she gave it to the captain in his own Castilian, exactly, and stood at the head of the causeway between the two of them, the seam neither man could find. This was the thing she had made herself into, and it was the thing that kept her alive, and it was, though she did not let the word form even in the privacy of her own skull, the thing that was killing the city. Two years ago she had been one of twenty women handed across at Potonchán, a gift, a girl sold twice by her own people, whose one possession in the world had been the inside of her own mouth — the one thing no owner had ever taken, the languages layered in her from a childhood traded up and down the coast. She had turned that one possession into indispensability. She had made herself the single living hinge on which two empires turned, so that neither the captain nor the Speaker could say a word to the other except through her, and a woman who is the only hinge is never again given away with the baggage. That had been the whole of her want, from the beginning: never to be given away again. And she had won it. She was the most necessary person in the entire war. The captains deferred to her; the lords of Tlaxcala treated her as a peer; the coalition-men called her Malintzin and the strangers Doña Marina and both said it with respect. She had won, completely, the only thing she had ever been able to want. And she had won it by becoming the mouth the surrender of her own world would pass through. She did the accounting only obliquely, only at the edges, only in the half-beat pause she still took before she rendered a man's words — the old habit, the touch of the inside of her wrist where a rope had once been — the pause in which, if she let it, she could feel the shape of what she was carrying. She did not let it. She stood at the head of the causeway and carried the terms and did not look too long at the far end of the wire, where among the jaguar-suited generals of the doomed city there was one big, still, grey-templed man who watched her across the water with something in his face that was not hate and that she would not name, a man she had met once at a hostage-court a year and a lifetime ago across this same pause, on the opposite side of the same voice — and she carried the words the length of the causeway between them, again, and again, tightening by a fraction each time the thing that was closing on the city, and told herself, as she had told herself since the first time, that she was only the tongue, and heard, in the pause, the small flat sound of the lie, and carried the next sentence anyway. In the siege camp on the southern shore, Beltrán de Coria, third son of a Medellín cooper who had come to this world for gold and God in about that order, counted his crossbow bolts every morning, because a man who counts a thing has done something about it, which is more than a man who worries can say. He had forty-one. He had started the siege with a hundred and had loosed the rest into the causeway fighting, and forty-one was not many, and the smith who could fettle new heads was busy at the boats, and Beltrán laid the forty-one out on his cloak in the grey morning and counted them and put them back in the quiver and felt, for the length of the counting, that the day had a shape he had made. He counted other things too. He counted the days — this was the fifty-something-th, he had lost the exact number, which frightened him a little because he had never lost a number in his life. He counted the dead, which was a losing game. And, because he could not help it, he counted the host. That was the count that had stopped being funny. Beltrán had come up out of Cuba with about five hundred Spaniards, and there were fewer now, and around those few hundred sunburnt, dysentery-thinned, gold-hungry Castilians there stood — he had walked the camp and made himself count the fires, the way he counted everything — a nation. Tens of thousands of them. Tlaxcalteca in their red-and-white, whole clans of them, come to settle a hundred years of Flower Wars on the empire that had penned them in; Totonac from the coast; the Acolhua of Texcoco under their own young lord who had gone over to the strangers with a whole lake-kingdom at his back; men from towns Beltrán had never heard of, come to watch the tax-collector burn. He had a joke about it, and he still told it, though it had gone thin in his mouth.

Beltran: You want to know what we did, Sancho? We sailed all this way to conquer an empire, and what we actually did was walk into a war that was already good and going, between the tax-man and everybody the tax-man ever squeezed, and get ourselves a very fine seat to watch it from. Front row. They'll write it up that we did it. God's truth, brother, mostly we just held their swords.

Bram: It was a true joke, which was why it had stopped being funny. Because the plain fact of it, sitting there over his forty-one bolts among a quarter-million enemies of the city being besieged by two hundred thousand of their neighbours, was that the thing that would be written down about this — the daring few, the steel, the handful of bold Castilians who threw down an empire — was a story, and he was inside the true version of it, and the true version was that the strangers were a knife the size of a finger held by a hand the size of a continent, and the hand had its own reasons, and had been waiting a long time. He picked the bolts back up and slung the quiver and looked across the water at the city he was helping to strangle — still, even now, even half-ruined, the most beautiful made thing he had ever seen in his life or would, the towers pale against the mountains, the smoke of its temple-fires still going up — and he found, as he found more and more of the days now, that the running commentary in his head had nothing to say. Each thing he swallowed cost more than the last, and the joke was worn through, and under the joke there was a thing he could not price, and he did not look at it, and he went to the boats. On the causeway, in the full heat of a June morning, Chimalli fought the kind of fight the Mexica could still win, and paid for it the kind of price that told him how few of them were left to pay. The strangers had learned not to come down the causeways in the open; now they came down them behind a moving wall — a column of allied swordsmen and Castilian steel with the cannon dragged up behind and the brigantines standing off on either flank to sweep the water clear of canoes. Chimalli stood on a bridge-span two-thirds of the way out with his club in his hand and his thumb finding the obsidian edge of it, and behind him, hidden under the causeway houses and in the reeds where the ships could not see them close in against the stone, four hundred men and a hundred canoes waited for the thing he had built the morning around. He let the column come. That was the hardest part and the whole of it: to stand on the span and let the wall of shields and the flat foreign faces and the dragged cannon come all the way on, past the drawn-back point where a lesser general would have loosed too early, until the head of the column was out on the span with the water close on both sides and the middle of it strung out over the last narrow stretch — and then he gave the cry, and the trap he had cut in the causeway sprang. The span they were crossing was not whole. His men had opened it in the night and laid it back over with reed mats and a skin of dirt, so that it looked like road and was a lie, and the weight of the column found the lie, and the front of the wall of shields went down into the water in their steel with a sound he would carry, a heavy ringing splashing chaos of men who could not swim in armour that would not come off. And out of the reeds and from under the house-eaves the canoes came up on both sides at once, the water-ambush, the thing the lake could still do even with the ships out beyond it — a hundred canoes rising against the strung-out flanks of the column with the atlatl darts hissing off the throwing-boards and the long lake-spears reaching up over the causeway stones, and Chimalli went off the span into the head of the broken column with four hundred men behind him and the drum of the war-house booming out its rhythm across the water to time the assault. This was the fight the Mexica knew. Not the open lake, not the cannon, not the thing with no hand — this, close, on a road, hand to hand, where a jaguar general with the finest club in the world could still be the deadliest thing on the causeway. He took a man off the span into the water. He broke a shield and the arm behind it. The high formal Nahuatl that had deserted him at Toxcatl was long gone; what came out of him now was the blunt short speech of the field, three words at a time, hold — the — line, take — the — bridge, and his men held and took. A Castilian came at him over the wrack of the broken span, a young one, fast, with a sword of the grey foreign steel that shore an obsidian edge clean off a club, and Chimalli was half a breath slow — he was forty-odd and had been fighting since the ships came at dawn — and the blade came down where his head had been and skidded off the raised boss of his shield in a shriek of steel on lacquered hide, a hand's breadth from his face, close enough to feel the wind of it. He did not have a second breath to be slow in. He put the club into the man below the arm where the steel did not cover him and felt the ribs go, and the young stranger folded into the water, and Chimalli was already turning to the next, and did not let himself feel the hand's breadth, then, because a man who feels the near-miss in the middle of the fight is the next to go into the water. For a while it hung. The cannon on the column's flank found the range and one of them fired down the length of the causeway into the press, and the ball took a file of his men off their feet and the smoke rolled and for a moment the assault staggered — the guns were the one thing the water-ambush could not answer, the flat crash and the erasing of men who had been there a heartbeat before, and Chimalli felt the assault begin to come apart around the guns the way it always did, the terror doing the work. So he did the only thing there was: he went at the guns. Three words at a time, the — guns — now, he took what he had toward the crew before they could reload, over the wrack of the broken span and the dying, and the canoes came in behind him against the flank, and they reached the nearest gun and killed the men on it with the clubs before the slow-match could come down again, and the crash did not come, and the assault, released, surged back. And they took the span. For a burning hour they took it, and threw the head of the column back down the causeway in ruin, the water on both sides of the broken bridge full of drowning steel and the canoes finishing what the trap began, and the men around Chimalli came up out of the fight roaring, throats raw, faces splashed, a sound of pure fierce joy that the city had not made in weeks — because they had won, cleanly, on their own ground and their own terms, the way the Mexica knew how to win, and for the length of that roar a man could believe the water still belonged to them and the wall still stood and the strangers could still be thrown back into the lake the way they had been thrown once before. Chimalli let the men have it. It was real, and it was earned, and it was the last thing that was true before the next thing. And then he found Cuextli in the water. Cuextli was his second, a man of his own old calpulli, a farmer's son like himself who had come up beside him for twenty years, the one man in the war-council who still called him by the short name from before the rank; and Cuextli had gone off the far side of the span in the first rush with a Castilian ball in him from one of the guns on the column's flank, and by the time Chimalli reached him the water had done the rest, and he pulled his oldest friend up out of the brack by the harness and there was nothing in the face to pull up to. And that was the price, and Chimalli stood in the shallows holding him while the men cheered the taken bridge, and did the arithmetic he had watched the young Speaker do over the map. They had won the span. They had killed a hundred of the column and lost thirty of their own, and thirty was a good exchange, a general's exchange, the kind you are trained to be glad of — and there were only so many Cuextli in the city, and the strangers could lose a hundred allies off a column and there were two hundred thousand more of them on the shore, and the Mexica could not, and so a victory that cost thirty men and one Cuextli was a defeat that felt like a victory, and would feel like one every day until the day there were no more spans to win and no more Cuextli to lose, and Chimalli laid his friend down on the causeway stones out of the water and closed the eyes and went to see the bridge properly drawn before the next column came, because the next column was always coming, and the water was no longer the wall. Beltrán learned what the boats were for from inside one. He was no sailor — a Medellín boy who had crossed one ocean and hated every league of it — but the brigantines were short of men who could shoot, and Beltrán could shoot, and so on the mornings when the ships went out to break the canoe-fleets he stood in the waist of one of the thirteen with his crossbow and his forty-one bolts and did the work that had taken the lake. He did not love it and he did not look away from it, and afterward he could never make it sound in the telling like the clean thing the story would want. It was not clean. It was the ugliest work he had done in a life that had not been short of ugly work. The ships hunted the canoes the way a hawk hunts in the open — by speed the canoes could not match once the wind was up, running them down in the deep water where the lake gave the paddlers nowhere to hide. Beltrán's ship came onto a canoe-line one white morning off the Tlatelolco shore, forty or fifty war-canoes strung out to screen the water-approach to the last free market, and the master put the wind on the quarter and drove her straight into the line at a dead run. He felt the ram go home through the boards under his feet, a long splintering crunch he felt in his knees, the bow of the brigantine riding up and over the nearest canoe and folding it under, men and paddles and the pieces of the hull going down along the ship's flank into the churn, and then the ships were in among the line and it was the close work. The little cannon in the bow spoke — one hard flat crash and a gout of powder-smoke and the front of the next canoe simply erased, and Beltrán, deafened, half-blind in the smoke, was already leaning out over the gunwale to shoot down into the water at the men trying to board, because that was the danger, the canoes were low and quick and the Mexica came up the ship's sides out of them with the long lake-spears and the clubs, and a boarding wall of them could take a brigantine if they got aboard in numbers, and so the whole of Beltrán's morning was to lean out over the side into the noise and shoot them off the hull as they came, at a range where he could not miss and could not stop coming. A dart came out of the smoke and went through the gunwale a hand's breadth from his throat, close enough that he felt the flick of air off the fletching against his neck and heard the wet thud of it into the man behind him, a Tlaxcalteca crossbow-loader named — he never learned his name — who sat down hard against the mast with the atlatl dart standing out of him and a look of mild surprise, and died in the time it took Beltrán to span his bow again with his hands shaking so hard he could barely seat the string. Somewhere below the gunwale a man was screaming in the water, a high thin sound of pure terror that did not stop, and around him the boat was all shouting and smoke and the crack of the crossbows, and Beltrán fired down into the churn without letting himself find a face, because a man who finds a face on the water cannot fire the next bolt. He had been a hand's breadth from the water himself, from going over the side into the churn where the ram had gone, and he knew it, all through the rest of the fight he knew it, the cold specific knowledge in the body of exactly where the line had been and how little had kept him on the right side of it. The Mexica came up the ship's side twice more before it was done — the low canoes darting in under the reach of the guns, the men swarming up over the rail with the clubs and the long spears, and the second time they very nearly had her, four of them over the gunwale amidships and a Castilian down with his throat opened before the crew beat them back off the deck with pike and sword and the sheer high walls the canoes could not match. Beltrán stove a man's head with the butt of his crossbow because there was no time to span it — a thing he had not known he would do, and did — and felt the shudder of it go up his arms, and did not think about it, then or ever, in words. That was the true shape of taking the lake: not a line of gleaming ships in a painting, but this, close and screaming and half-drowned, decided by high sides and cannon against courage and numbers, every morning, until the numbers ran out. And they broke the line. That was the thing the ships always did, in the end — they had the speed and the guns and the high sides, and the canoes had numbers and courage and nothing that reached, and so the mornings ended the same way, with the lake for a stretch of hours emptied of the city's boats and the strangers' ships standing out on the open water wherever they pleased, and the canoes that survived pulled back in among the houses where the deep-draught ships could not follow. It was never a battle in the way the songs mean it. It was a hunt, with cannon, on a lake, and the hunted were brave and lost, and Beltrán stood in the waist of the ship afterward with a dead loader against the mast and his own hands not yet steady and the beautiful doomed city coming up pale off the bow, and had nothing at all to say about it, which was new, and worse than the shaking. In the city, the strangling did its slow work, and the slow work was the worst work, and it did not look like war at all. Chimalli walked the wards in the seventh week of it and understood that the ships and the columns and the cannon were only the loud edge of the thing; the thing itself was quiet, and patient, and had no hand, and was winning. The strangers barely had to fight now. They had cut the water and taken the lake and closed the ring, and then they simply waited, tightening it a street at a time, and let the city do to itself what an army would have paid in blood to do. It began with the thirst, which never really stopped, only changed its shape. The sweet water was a memory. The people drank the brack from the canals and the lake-edge and sickened, and the sickness and the thirst fed each other in a circle no healer could break, and the very old and the very young went first, quietly, in the houses, the way the pox had taken them in the winter, only slower and with more shame in it, because thirst makes a person do things hunger does not. Then the food. The maize was gone by the eighth week — the last of the rationed stores, the seed-corn eaten, and after the maize the people ate the things you eat when there is no food: the lake-grasses and the reed-roots, the lizards and the water-fly cakes the poor had always taken from the lake, and then the deer-hides and the glue and the bark, and Chimalli watched a city that had fed a quarter of a million souls off the floating gardens come down, ward by ward, to the flat-eyed arithmetic of the starving, who do not weep and do not riot but only sit, and wait, and grow light. And through it, the thing he could not stop thinking, walking the wards with his own tongue thick in his own dry mouth: this was the war being won, and no warrior was winning it. All his life war had been a thing men did to men, with a shape and a grammar and an honour in it — you took a man alive if you could, you gave him to the stone, you counted your captives, the sun was fed, the world turned. This had no grammar. There was no one on the causeway to fight for the thirst. The strangers had discovered the one campaign in which valour was worth nothing at all: you did not have to beat the Mexica, who were, man for man on a bridge, still the deadliest fighters on the lake; you had only to sit on the mainland end of a stone channel and wait, and let a quarter of a million people do your killing for you, quietly, without a battle, while you kept your own men safe on the shore and let the towns you had bought carry the assaults. He had spent a year making the strangers pay in blood for every span of causeway, and it had not mattered, because they were not paying in the currency the war was being decided in. The war was being decided in water, and in maize, and in the sickness the water bred, and against those a jaguar general with the finest club in the world was exactly as useful as the child dying of the flux in the doorway he passed, which was to say, not at all. And the dead stopped being buried. That was the thing he could not get used to, the thing that told him more than the ships had. A city keeps its dead a certain way; it is one of the first things a people is, the way it treats the ones who stop. And the city could not, any more. There were too many and too few hands and nowhere to put them — the causeways held by the enemy, the ground all taken up, the living too weak to dig — and so the dead began to lie where they fell, in the houses, and then in the canals, in the beautiful stone canals the lords had washed in, and the smell of it lay over the whole island in the heat, and Chimalli walked through it and made himself look, because he was a man who looked at things, and there was nothing to fight, nothing to strike, no span to hold, only the patient arithmetic of a ring drawn tight around an island and left to do its own killing. But the thing that undid him, the thing he had not expected and could not have named beforehand, was the silence. He had grown up inside the loudest city in the world. The great market of Tlatelolco had roared, sixty thousand voices in it in a single day, a sound the strangers said was louder than Rome; the canals had been thick with canoes and calling; the temple had sounded the conch at every watch, and under it all, always, the city had made the enormous low breathing sound of a quarter of a million people living close together on the water, a sound so constant it was the same as silence to a man born in it. And now it was gone. The market was empty. The canals were still. And in the place where the great living roar had been there was a quiet so total that Chimalli could stand in the middle of the city at midday and hear a single reed-warbler somewhere out in the dead water, and hear his own footsteps, and hear, once, from far across the ruined wards, a child crying and then stopping, and nothing after. He had defended the loudest city in the world down to a silence in which one could hear the enemy's cannon quite clearly across the water in the evenings, thudding, patient, in no hurry at all, and he stood in the silence where the whole roar of the world had been and understood that this — not the ships, not the steel — this quiet was what the fall would sound like, and that it had already begun. He went home that night because he could not carry the silence alone, and Xóchitl was there, in the small house near the potters' canal where they had lived their whole married life, thinner than she had been, her potter's wheel long stopped for want of anyone to buy a pot in a starving city, and she looked at his face when he came in out of the dark and knew where he had been walking, and did not ask, and that was the first mercy. They had been married more than twenty years, and the war had taken the marriage the way it had taken everything else, by degrees. He had not touched her, hardly, since the strangers came — a warrior saves the debt of himself for the war, he had told himself, though the truer thing was that intimacy was the one place his unbelief could get out of him and he had shut the door on it the way you shut a door on a draught. In the plague winter the door had cracked, once, in the worst of the dying, and he had said into the dark the thing he had never said, and she had let it stand and answered it with her body and never spoken of it after. And now it was the last summer, and they both knew it in the way you know a thing you have not said, and there was no more debt of himself worth saving, and no more war worth saving it for, and a starving city outside the reed walls drinking brackish water in a silence where the market used to roar, and inside the two of them there was still this, the oldest and least cosmic thing, the one thing the ring around the island could not reach in and cut.

Xochitl: Drink. I know what it is; drink it anyway. You cannot walk the whole city on a dry throat and carry that face on top of it. Whatever you saw out there today, it will still be there in the morning, and you will still be the one who has to look at it, and you cannot do that thirsty. So drink, and come here, and let it be night for a while. The city can spare you the length of one night. It has spared you nothing else.

Bram: She gave him the water first — a cup of the brack, because there was nothing else, and she had let it stand so the worst of the grit settled, and she held it to him and made him drink before anything, the way she had fed him for twenty years, tending the animal body first, and he drank the foul water from her hands and it was, past all sense, the sweetest thing he had tasted in a moon, because of the hands. And then, in the dark of the house with the conch sounding a watch somewhere out over the dying city, they came together the way people do who have known each other so long that there is no performance left in it and no hurry and nothing to prove — slow, and certain, and grief-shot, her weight against him familiar as his own breathing, the shape of her he had known since they were both young in a city that was young, and he surrendered to it the way he had always hated to surrender and now did not hate at all, because there was so little time left to be a body in and he no longer had a god to be ashamed before. There was no hurry in it and nothing to prove and a great deal to say that neither of them said with words. Twenty years is a long conversation, and most of it by the end is carried in the body — the particular way she fit against his shoulder that had not changed since they were young in a city that was young, the map of her he knew in the dark better than he knew any causeway, the small sounds that were only for him and had been only for him for two decades and would not, he understood with a clarity that did not spoil the moment but deepened it, be for anyone much longer. He had spent his life being the state's body and the sun's body, the tlacatéccatl, the general the city spent on its wars; and here, in the dark of the little house by the potters' canal, he was for a while just a body that belonged to a woman who belonged to him, the oldest and least sacred arrangement in the world, the one the temple had told him all his life was a lapse and a theft, and he gave himself to it wholly and felt no theft in it. Afterward she lay against him in the dark and he held her, and he did not say the thing again, the thing he had said in the winter, because it did not need saying now; but he thought it, holding her — that this was what the whole of it had always been for, this and the boy behind the calmécac walls and the flowers coming up on the gardens in a spring someone should be alive to see, that he had spent forty years defending an order that told him this was a private weakness and a theft from the sun, and that the order had been wrong about the one thing that turned out to matter, and that here at the end of everything, with the water cut and the lake taken and the dead in the canals, the small un-cosmic weight of a woman he had loved for twenty years in a dark room was the only thing he had ever defended that had actually been worth the defending. He held her, and did not sleep, and let himself have it, all the way, because he knew — not the day, but the nearness of it — that there would not be many more, and there were not. When the strangers pushed too far up a causeway and a span went bad under them, the city took them alive, because that was what the city had always done, and now the whole meaning of it turned inside out. On a day in the deep of the siege a Castilian assault broke on a drawn bridge and the canoes took perhaps sixty of them out of the water alive — Castilians and their allies both — and brought them into the city, and the priests received them, and the great drum began on the high temple, the huge two-toned war-drum whose voice carried across the whole lake, and Chimalli climbed the temple steps to perform the thing he no longer believed for a city he did. He had given forty men to the stone in his climbing life and had believed, every time, with his whole chest, that it was the most sacred act a man could do — the captive not murdered but offered, the beloved whose freely-given death fed the sun and held up the sky, the oldest and highest debt of the world paid hand over hand so the darkness would not come. He had lost that in a cold courtyard in the winter. He knew now there was no one on the other end of the offering and never had been. And he climbed the steps anyway in the full war-suit, dressed more perfectly than he had dressed for it in years, every feather right, because if he was going to do this thing that had been the center of his life, and do it emptied of the faith that had made it holy, then he would at least do it correctly, for the city that still needed to see it done. So the drum boomed out over the water, the deep two-toned drum that could be heard in the enemy's camp on the far shore, and the captured strangers were brought up the long steps one by one in the sight of everyone — the sight of the starving city below, which needed to see its enemies given to the gods, and needed it more the hungrier it got; and the sight of the enemy across the water, which watched its own men climb the temple in the distance and vanish at the top. Chimalli did the rite. He did it as sacrament for the city that believed, and he felt it as horror in the part of himself that no longer did, and both were true at once and neither cancelled the other, and that was the whole unbearable center of the thing: that the act which had been the most sacred in the world, seen now from the trench across the water, was the single most damning thing his people did — the proof the strangers would carry to the ends of the earth that these were people who had to be unmade — and that from the temple steps it was still, to the priests beside him and the city below, the sun's own due, paid perfectly, in the one currency the city had left when the water and the maize were gone. The captives went up in the strangers' own gear, some of them, stripped of the steel and given the feathers and the paint of the offering, and the priests danced them the little way they were meant to dance, and the ones who understood what was happening — the Castilians who had heard the stories in the camp — did not go quietly, and the ones who did not understand went worse. Chimalli had stood beside this a hundred times and it had been the holiest sight in his life; and now he stood beside it and every part of him that had lost the god heard it for what the trench across the water heard, a slaughter of bound men on a stair in the sun, and every part of him that had not yet finished losing it still felt the old pull of the sacrament, the deep certainty of forty years that this was the axle the world turned on; and he did not resolve the two. He had stopped trying to resolve anything. He let both be true and did the rite with his hands while his hands remembered how, correct in every particular, a hollow man performing a full thing perfectly, and did not let his face show either the horror or the grief, be…
