Bram: The first thing is the cold coming up off the water, and the second is that these are not my hands. They are broad and split-knuckled and they know, without being asked, exactly how to lay an oar into a grey pre-dawn lagoon so that the boat goes forward and makes almost no sound. I have woken, this time, into a young boatman of Venice, somewhere before first light, rowing a flat little skiff across water the colour of a knife, and the body is calm even though I am not, because the body has done this ten thousand mornings and I have done it never. That is the joke of my whole strange life, and it never stops being funny: I am terrified, and the hands are humming a song. There is one passenger, and he is the reason the morning has a held breath in it. He is a big man, ruddy, maybe forty-five, a reddish beard going grey, wrapped against the cold in a scholar's dark gown — and he is sitting very still in the middle of the boat with a long thing across his knees, about a metre of it, wrapped in cloth and held in both arms the way you would hold a sleeping child, or a sword you did not want anyone to see. He has not told me what it is. He has told me only where to go — to San Marco, to the piazza, before the bells — and he has paid me twice the fare to go quietly, and he keeps turning the wrapped thing a little in his arms as if he is checking it is still warm. And he talks. Not to me — to himself, low, in quick Tuscan, rehearsing. I catch pieces of it over the drip of the oar. Not the moon, not yet, don't say the moon. Ships. Say ships. Say two hours. Let them count the hours themselves. He is practising, I realise, the way a man practises a speech that is going to change his life, and his hands, on the cloth, are not quite steady, and I understand — the way I always understand, from the inside — that this quiet, muttering man is more frightened than I am, and has more reason to be. Because I know one thing the boatman cannot, and it is the thing that makes my chest tight in the cold. I know what is under that cloth. I know what he is about to do with it — this morning, from the top of the tallest tower in the city, to the most powerful men in the freest republic in Italy. And I know — the way you know the last line of a story you have somehow already read — where the looking is going to take him. Not this year. Not for a while. But there is a fire waiting for this man, years down the road, a real one, and it is waiting precisely because of the thing wrapped in cloth on his knees, and he does not feel its warmth yet, and I do, and I cannot say a word. So I do the only thing I am ever allowed to do. I row him toward it. I lay the oar in and pull, and the great domes come up grey out of the mist ahead, and the water peels back off the bow without a sound, and I carry this frightened, brilliant, doomed and glorious man exactly, precisely, faithfully toward the morning he has paid me to deliver him to, and I do not slow the boat by one stroke, because that is the deal, and it has always been the deal, and it will break my heart in about an hour and a half. So that is who I am, this time: a boatman with split knuckles and a strong back, ferrying the most dangerous man in Venice across a lagoon the colour of a knife — and neither of us is supposed to know it, and only one of us is going to find out. Come with me. You are going to want to be in the room for this one — because in about four months, in the freezing dark, this man is going to look at the sky the way no one has ever thought to look at it, and it is going to change size. This is Chronicles — history, lived from the inside. I'm the Traveller, and I don't read you the past; I wake up inside it, in the body of someone who was really there, and I take you with me. Today: Italy, the winter of 1609 into 1610, when a professor of mathematics, drowning in debt, ground a better glass than anyone in the world, pointed it at the sky, and became the first human being to look at the heavens and truly grasp what he was seeing — mountains on the Moon, and four moons going round another world — and cracked open a universe that had been sealed shut for two thousand years. Episode six. Come on. Before I take you down into it, I have to give you the sky — because the whole story is about a sky, and it is not your sky, and until you can feel the one they had, you cannot feel what it cost to break it. So look up with me, in 1609, with the eyes of any educated person alive. What you see is not space. Space — the black, cold, endless emptiness with things floating in it — is a modern idea, and nobody has it yet. What you see instead is a building. A finished, perfect, and rather beautiful building, with you standing on the floor of it. The Earth is the floor — motionless, heavy, sitting still at the very centre of everything, which is not a compliment; the centre is the bottom, the sump, the place all the heavy dull stuff falls to. And around you, nested one inside the next like the layers of an onion, are enormous transparent crystal spheres, and fixed into them, turning slowly and forever, are the Moon, then Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and, on the outermost sphere of all, the fixed stars, all of them wheeling around you, every night, exactly on time. Aristotle drew the plan of this building nearly two thousand years before, the astronomer Ptolemy did the mathematics that made it keep good time, and the Church had blessed the whole thing until it was not just science but very nearly scripture. And here is the part you have to hold onto, because everything turns on it. That building had two storeys, and they were made of different stuff. Down here, below the Moon — the sublunary world, they called it, everything under the Moon's sphere — is the realm of change: of mud and fire and growing and dying and rot, the four earthly elements churning and spoiling. But up there, from the Moon outward, is the realm of the perfect. The heavens are made of a fifth element — a quintessence, a fifth essence — that cannot change, cannot age, cannot be marked or corrupted in any way. The Moon is a flawless polished ball. The heavens are incorruptible and eternal, by their very nature, as a matter of physics and of faith at once. Now — a Polish churchman named Copernicus had, back in 1543, quietly suggested you could do the sums more neatly if you put the Sun in the middle and let the Earth move. But almost nobody believed the Earth actually, physically moved; it was offered as a calculating trick, a convenience for the mathematics, not a claim about the world, and the world felt absurd, and the Bible seemed to say otherwise, and that was that. To break a sky like this you could not just argue. Arguments had been had for two thousand years. You would need something no one had ever had: a new sense — a way to make the sky itself get up in court and testify. And that, it turns out, is exactly what a couple of ground lenses in a tube can do. Now let me peg this year to a world you might already carry in your head, because it is closer to home than it feels. The winter our story turns on is 1609 into 1610. In England, at that exact moment, Shakespeare is an old pro writing his last few plays — The Tempest is about a year off — and a committee of scholars is putting the finishing touches to the King James Bible, which goes to the printers in 1611. Across in Prague, a poor, brilliant, half-starved German mathematician named Johannes Kepler has just published a book proving the planets move in ellipses, not perfect circles — that is the other half of this whole revolution, happening at the very same time, done with pure mathematics while our man does it with glass. In France, a king, Henri the Fourth, has about a year to live before a knife finds him in his stopped carriage. Far across the ocean, the little English colony at Jamestown is starving to death in the snow that same winter, and the Mayflower will not sail for another decade. Caravaggio dies in 1610; Rembrandt is a toddler. And over the whole of it hangs a Church at its most watchful and most frightened, because the Reformation has split Christendom and Rome is guarding every door. Which brings me to the shadow I need you to carry into this bright story from the very first minute — because just nine years before our winter, in the year 1600, in a flower market in Rome called the Campo de' Fiori, the Inquisition took a man named Giordano Bruno, who had taught, among many other heresies, that the universe was infinite and the stars were other suns with other worlds — and they burned him alive. Nine years. That is how fresh the fire is. So hold the whole picture: while Shakespeare finishes and the King James Bible goes to press, an Italian professor is about to turn a Dutch toy on the heavens and find the perfect, sealed, sacred sky full of mountains and spots and moons — in the same world, the same decade, that had just burned a man for saying rather less. That is the ground. Now let me take you back a few weeks before that nervous morning on the water — to a workshop, and a boy, and the patient, unglamorous business of grinding a piece of glass. Three weeks before the boat, in a low workshop in Padua that smells of hot pitch and linseed oil and hide-glue, I am a boy on a stool with a lens in my hands and an ache in my shoulders, and I have been grinding the same piece of glass for two days. These hands belong to an apprentice — I'm maybe fourteen, all elbows — and they know the work the way the boatman's knew the oar: I am rubbing a little disc of glass against a flat metal plate smeared with wet grit, round and round and round, wearing it slowly, patiently, into a curve, and every so often I stop and hold it up to the candle and turn it and hunt through it for the tiny trapped bubbles that will ruin a week's grinding in a heartbeat. It is the most boring miracle in the world. It is also — though I do not know it, though nobody in this room quite knows it yet — the single most important piece of manual labour being done anywhere on Earth this year. Because of the man at the other bench. My master's most demanding customer, in and out of here for weeks now, and the whole shop leans a little when he is in it. He is a professor from the university — Galileo, the mathematics man — and he is not what I expected a professor to be. He is big and loud and quick, he argues with everything, he laughs like a door slamming, and right now he is bent over a little heap of our lenses with the look of a man who has not been sleeping and does not intend to start. He is also, everyone in Padua knows, badly in debt. Three children and no wife to speak of and a salary that never stretches and a younger brother whose dowries he is somehow paying, and here he is spending his evenings in a lens-grinder's shop instead of a bed. Nobody can work out why. Here is why, and I get it in pieces, the way the shop gets it. A few weeks ago a rumour came down the road from the north: that up in Holland, a spectacle-maker had put two lenses in a tube and made a thing that brought far-off things near — a toy, they were selling them at fairs, a glass, an occhiale, the eye-glass. Just a curiosity. And here is the thing that tells you exactly who this man is. He did not send away to Holland to buy one. He could not have afforded it if he had. Instead he sat down and worked out how it must be done — a bulging lens at the front, a hollowed one at your eye — reasoned it out cold, from the bare rumour that such a thing could exist, and then he came here, to the best glass-grinders in the Republic, to make one better than any toy. And I have watched it happen on this bench. I have watched him go from a crude little three-times glass — hold it up and the far wall of the shop jumps a bit closer — to something else entirely. He calls me over. He does this — he'll grab whoever's nearest, an apprentice, a servant, he cannot bear to be astonished alone.
Galileo: Boy. Here — close the other eye, and look down the street. Go on. Now tell me what your own two eyes are worth against a little ground glass.
Bram: And he puts the newest tube to my eye and points it out the open door, down the street, and I look, and my stomach drops clean through the floor. Because the far end of the street — the cobbler's sign four hundred paces off that I can barely read on a good day — is right there. Close enough to touch. Close enough to read the little painted boot swinging on its hook. It has leapt the length of the whole street and landed a foot from my face, and it is not a toy, it is not a bit of fairground fun, it is a hole punched clean through distance, and I make a noise I am not proud of, and behind me the professor laughs that door-slam laugh, delighted, because my face is doing the thing his has been doing in private for weeks. "Eight times," he says, taking it back, already somewhere else, already calculating. "Nearly nine. Better than anything the Dutch are peddling — theirs are muddy, three-power fairings, useless." He turns it in the light, this plain tube of wood and leather and two little discs of our glass, and I watch a whole future run across his face at speed. He is not thinking about the stars — not yet, not for months. He is a man in debt looking at an object, and I can see him doing the sum. "A glass," he says, half to himself, "that puts an enemy fleet in your hand while it is still a smudge on the far horizon, a half-day of open water out." He looks at me without seeing me. "What is that worth, boy, to a republic that lives and dies by the sea?" And then he wraps the tube in a cloth, careful as swaddling, and goes out into the evening with it under his arm, off to write the letters that will get him up a certain tower — and I stand there in the pitch-smell with my heart still going, holding the plate and the grit, a small pair of hands that helped, without ever being told what for, to grind the lens that broke the sky. Let me stop the boy's hands for a second and be straight with you about that tube, because the story everyone half-remembers gets the very first fact wrong, and the true version is better. Galileo did not invent the glass — the thing a later age would call the telescope, though nobody had that word yet. He didn't. The instrument was Dutch. In the autumn of 1608, a spectacle-maker in the town of Middelburg named Hans Lipperhey went to the Dutch government and tried to patent a device of two lenses "for seeing things far away as if they were near." They turned him down — partly because two other men swore they'd thought of it too — and the practical effect of refusing to patent a thing is that everybody gets to copy it, so within months these little spyglasses were spreading across Europe as toys, sold at fairs, three-power curiosities, from the Low Countries to Paris to Italy. And the rumour of it reached Galileo the way the best things always reach a man — through a friend. He had a brilliant, dangerous friend in Venice we will meet properly soon, a friar named Paolo Sarpi, who had been tracking this Dutch gadget for the better part of a year, and when a peddler actually turned up in Venice trying to sell one, it was Sarpi who tipped him off. So Galileo heard only that the thing existed, and roughly what it did — and that, honestly, is the whole of his debt to Holland, and he was a little slippery about even that much afterward. Because what he did with the rumour is the real thing, and it is his alone. He reasoned out the optics from first principles. He ground his own lenses, or had them ground — I held some of them — and he pushed the thing from a muddy three-power toy that Dutch fairgoers giggled at up to eight, nine, and soon twenty times, a genuine instrument where everyone else had a novelty. He didn't invent the glass. He perfected it, and then — and this is the part nobody in Holland thought to do — he pointed it at the sky. Hold that, because we'll come back to it: the myth is a lone genius inventing a miracle; the truth is a debt-ridden man building brilliantly on somebody else's toy, and being the first to turn it seriously on the heavens and tell the world what he saw. But first — the money. Because before this glass was ever a key to the cosmos, it was, to a drowning man, a lifeboat. Now it is the twenty-first of August, and I am a young man in good wool at the foot of the bell-tower of San Marco, and I am about to climb three hundred steps I would very much rather not climb. These hands are soft — I am an aide to a senator, I carry his letters and I read the room for him and I know the price of everything and the weight of nothing — and my master has been summoned, along with what looks like half the Senate, to the top of the tallest tower in Venice at the request of that mathematics professor from Padua, and nobody will tell me why, and I have a terror of high places I have told exactly no one. So I climb, in the file of grumbling patricians, up and up the dim brick shaft with the great bronze bells hanging silent over our heads, and I come out at the top into the wind and the white light with my heart in my mouth, and there he is. Galileo. Ruddy, beaming, planted at the parapet like a man who owns the view, and in his hands that plain tube of wood and leather. He is nervous — I can see it, the too-wide smile, the way he keeps his voice up — but he is also performing, and he is very, very good at it. He does not explain the instrument. He does not give a lecture. He simply hands it to the most senior man present, an old senator with a face like a closed ledger, and points him out to sea, over the lagoon, over the long grey line of the Lido and out to the open Adriatic beyond.
Galileo: Look, Eccellenza. Out past the Lido, past the last of the water. And when you have seen what you have seen, ask yourselves one thing — what is it worth to Venice to sight a fleet two hours before the fleet can sight Venice?
Bram: And I watch the old man look. That is the thing I will remember — not the sea, the face. This is a man who has spent sixty years arranging his face so that it never gives anything away, and it comes apart. His mouth opens. He takes the glass down from his eye and stares at Galileo like Galileo has picked his pocket, and puts it back up, and looks again, and makes a small broken sound, and I feel the whole crowd of hard old men lean in, because something has happened to the ledger-faced senator that money has never once done. When it is my turn — because Galileo, bless him, works his way down even to the aides, he cannot bear to hoard it — I put the cold brass rim to my eye, and I understand. There are ships out there. Far out, at the very edge of sight, two hours from the harbour at least, sails that from up here are the faintest grey thorns on the horizon — and the glass reaches out over all that water and takes one and sets it down in front of me, whole, close, near enough that I can count the sails and see the tiny men moving on the deck, going about a morning that thinks it is completely private, two hours and a whole world away. My eye is standing on a horizon my body cannot reach. And I am a Venetian, I was bred to the sea and its dangers in my bones, and the meaning of it goes through me like cold water before I have any words for it: we would see them first. Any fleet, any enemy, any storm of sails coming for this city that lives or dies by who owns the water — we would see them two hours before they saw us. I take the glass from my eye and the ship snaps back to a grey thorn on the edge of the world, and I look at the plain little tube in my hands, and I feel the exact thing every hard-headed man on this tower is feeling: not wonder — advantage. And that is what they pay for. Not the heavens — the horizon. Within days the Doge himself, Leonardo Donà, has the instrument in his own hands, and the Senate does its cold arithmetic and gives its verdict, and the verdict is a fortune. They confirm Galileo's professorship at Padua for life — no more scrabbling for renewal every few years — and they roughly double his salary, to a thousand florins. A drowning man is hauled onto dry land in a single August week, and it is the horizon that does it, the weapon, the trade-glass, the fleet seen two hours out. Nobody on this tower, not one of these clever men, has thought for a single second to point the marvellous thing up. Why would you? Up is where the perfect, finished, unchanging heavens are. There is nothing up there to see that Aristotle did not already file and label two thousand years ago. The money is out at sea, and the money has been paid. But I know what he is going to do with the security they have just bought him. I stand at the top of the tower with the wind pulling at me and I watch Galileo take his glass back and wrap it up, rich now, safe now, tenured now — and I want to tell the ledger-faced senator, you have no idea what you have just funded. You think you have bought a spyglass for your navy. You have just paid a man to go home, and improve this thing past anything you can imagine, and turn it, one cold night this coming winter, up — at the one place two thousand years of certainty swore there was nothing new to find. And it matters, enormously, that all of this is happening here, in Venice, and not anywhere else in Italy — so let me tell you quickly what kind of city just doubled his pay. Venice in 1609 is the freest, worldliest, most stubbornly independent state on the peninsula: a merchant republic that answers to no king, trades with everyone including the infidel, and — this is the crucial part — has just faced down the Pope himself and won. Three years earlier, Rome had tried to bring Venice to heel with an interdict — essentially excommunicating the entire city, shutting its churches, a spiritual siege — and Venice had simply refused to blink, kept its churches open in open defiance, and forced Rome to back down. The Republic kept the Inquisition on a short and watchful leash inside its own borders in a way no other Italian state dared. Which is why a man like Galileo could think here, and teach here, and would soon publish here — freely, in the open, in a way that would have been far more dangerous in Florence or Rome. Venice was the one roof in Italy under which a bold mind could stand up straight. Remember that, because it is going to become one of the quiet tragedies of this story: the freest city in Italy is exactly the one he is about to leave. But we are getting ahead. Because the man who faced down that Pope, the mind who was Venice's own champion in the fight, the friar who tipped Galileo off about the Dutch glass in the first place — he is about to take me on a walk through the dark, and show me the price tag on the whole marvellous business. Some weeks later, in the autumn, I am carrying a letter through Venice at dusk, and I am carrying it the careful way — inside my shirt, against the skin — because I am a clerk to Fra Paolo Sarpi, and a letter of Sarpi's is not always a safe thing to be holding. These hands know the dark canals blind, every bridge and blind corner of them; they steer me down the narrow calli and over the little bridges through the fish-smell and the canal-mud toward the friary, and the whole time the letter sits against my heart like a hot coin, and I keep my face ordinary, because I have learned from my master that the way you survive is you do not look like a man with a secret. Sarpi is waiting in a bare cell that a poor parish priest would find austere. He is a Servite friar, in the plain black habit of his order — lean, spare, ascetic, a face like a blade that has been used — and he is the most brilliant man in Venice and possibly the most dangerous, and he does not look like either; he looks like a tired clerk himself, which is the point. He was the Republic's champion against the Pope in the great quarrel. He reads everything, he has dissected bodies with his own hands to learn how the eye works, he was the one who handled that Dutch peddler's glass and judged it and sent word to Galileo. And when he turns his head to take the letter from me, the candle catches the side of his face, and I see it, the way I see it every time and every time it stops my breath: the scar. The deep, dragged, badly-mended ruin along his jaw and cheek. Because two years ago, on the steps of his own friary, men came out of the dark and put a stiletto — a narrow dagger — into his face and neck, again and again, and left him for dead. He lived. And when they pulled the blade out and showed it to him afterward, Fra Paolo looked at the fine, particular workmanship of the knife that was meant to kill him, and he made the driest joke in the history of survival. "I recognise," he said, "the style of the Roman Curia." The style of the Roman court. He knew exactly who had sent the men, and he knew he could never prove it, and he made a joke about the craftsmanship, and went back to work. That is the man handing me a letter to carry. That is the mind that told Galileo about the glass. And tonight he is not dry, and he is not joking. He reads the letter — it is from Padua, it is the professor, full of the glass, full of plans, lit up like a boy — and I watch Sarpi's scarred face while he reads it, and what is on it is fear, and it is love, and they are the same thing. He folds it very small. And because I am young and I am only the furniture that carries the post, he says the thing to me that he cannot say to Galileo, quietly, looking at the candle and not at me.
Sarpi: He thinks he has found a way to make the whole world look. He may be right. God help him, I think he may be right. But you do not seem to understand, any of you, what it costs to make the world look at a thing it has decided not to see.
Bram: And then he tells me — because he thinks a boy should know what country he is really living in — about the Campo de' Fiori. Nine years ago. A Dominican named Giordano Bruno, held by the Inquisition for years, tried, condemned, unrepentant. And on a February morning in Rome they led him out into the flower market, and because they were afraid of what he might say to the crowd, they had — Sarpi says this very plainly, very quietly, and I have to hold the edge of the table — they had fixed his tongue, clamped it, so that the man who had spent his life saying the universe was infinite could not say one word more. And they stripped him, and they tied him to the stake upside down, and they lit the wood, and they burned him alive in front of the morning market, and the ash of him went up over the flower-sellers and the stalls, and by afternoon Rome had gone back to buying and selling flowers on the same square. Sarpi does not raise his voice through any of it. He does not need to. He just lets me feel the exact size of it — one man, one fire, one morning, nine years ago, and everyone here still remembers the smell — and then he says the only lesson he has.
Sarpi: So. Publish, yes. Tell the truth, yes. But live, boy. A free mind's first duty is to outlast the men who would put it out. Tell that to no one. Especially not to him.
Bram: And he sends me back out into the dark with a new letter and the old dread, and I carry it through the same canals under the same watching windows, and now I understand what the whole bright glittering business of the glass is standing on top of. Somewhere north of here a big ruddy man is laughing his door-slam laugh and grinding a better lens, giddy, unafraid, about to point his miracle at heaven. And nine years cold, in a flower market in Rome, there is a patch of ground that remembers a fire. And the whole time I am rowing that letter home, I am doing the thing my master taught me, keeping my face ordinary, a boy with a secret against his heart in a city full of men who know the style of the knife. I need you to sit with that dread, because it is real and it is coming — but I also need you to know that it is not, yet, the weather of Galileo's life. Down in Padua the winter of 1609 is closing in, and the man is not brooding on any fire. He is happy. He is safe for the first time in years, tenured, his pay doubled, and he is about to do the greatest work of his life — and I want, before I take you up to the sky with him, to take you in through his own front door. Because the glory that is coming has a private ground under it, an ordinary, human, warm ground of bread and children and a woman at the window, and the whole cost of the thing he is about to become can only be measured from inside that house. So let me put you there, on a cold evening, in the last of the ordinary time — and let me put you, this once, behind the eyes of the person history almost entirely forgot. Tonight I am a woman, and her name is Marina, and this is her house — or as near to hers as a house is ever allowed to be, for a woman like her. Marina Gamba, of Venice, no fortune, no family name that opens a door; and for something over ten years now the woman who has shared a bed and a life and a table with the professor Galileo Galilei, and borne him three children, and never once been married to him, because a professor does not marry a woman with no dowry, and everyone including Marina has always known it. I feel it the moment I settle into her — the whole shape of the thing — the way you feel the fit of a coat that has been worn a long time by someone else. Love with no floor under it. Warmth on borrowed ground. The children are asleep in the next room. Virginia, the eldest, nine now and sharp as her father; little Livia; the baby, Vincenzo. And the house is doing the small last things of the evening — the fire banked, the bread covered for morning, the smell of woodsmoke and old stone and children's hair. And there, at the window with his back to me, is the man. He has a lute in his hands. His father was a musician, a famous one, and Galileo plays beautifully, absently, the way other men drum their fingers, and he is playing something low now with the instrument tipped to catch the last light, and not really seeing the strings, and I know that walk of his mind, I have watched it for ten years: he is not here. Half of him is already out in the cold garden with the glass. He is always, a little, somewhere I cannot follow. And I love him. That is the plain truth I have to hold, being her, or the rest of it makes no sense. I go to him at the window and I put my arms around him from behind, and he leans back into me without stopping the music, and I press my face between his shoulder-blades and breathe him in — woodsmoke and ink and the warm particular smell of a man I have known in the dark for a decade — and his voice rumbles through his back against my cheek when he speaks, some joke about the lute being out of tune, and his free hand comes up and finds mine and holds it against his chest, and for a moment there is no debt and no glory and no cold garden, there is only this: the weight of him against me, the fire low, the children breathing in the next room, the old easy hunger of two people who fit. Later, when the candle is out and it is just the shape of him in the dark and the warmth of the bed we have shared a thousand nights, he is gentle and he is here, all of him, finally here, his hands sure and unhurried, and I let myself have it, all of it, the way you drink water you know is going to be taken away. Because here is what I know, lying awake after, listening to him breathe, that he has not said and will not say. The glass is going to make him great. I can feel it coming the way you feel weather. And greatness, for a man of his birth, means a court — a prince, a title, a city like Florence — and there is no place in a court for a Venetian woman with no name and three illegitimate children. He will rise, and rising, he will go somewhere I cannot be. He will take the children — the daughters at least, in time, and the boy after — because a great man's children can be legitimised and placed and provided for, and their mother cannot. I have always known this. I knew it the first year. You can love a man completely and never once mistake it for safety, and I have done both, every single day, for ten years — held the love in one hand and the cold knowledge in the other and never let either of them go. He thinks, when he thinks of it at all, that he is happy, and that we are settled, and that there is time. There is not time. There is this. There is his warm back and the low fire and the last of the ordinary evenings, and me being wise enough, God help me, to know it is the last, and foolish enough to hold on anyway. Hold Marina there, in the dark, being wise and foolish at once — because everything now turns on a single small decision, and it is the hinge of the whole story, and it is so simple you could miss it. That autumn, having wrung the glass up to some twenty times its power, Galileo took the instrument that had made him rich — the trade-glass, the weapon, the thing the whole Republic understood as a way to see out, across the water, at ships and coastlines and the works of men — and one cold clear night, in the garden behind the house you were just standing in, he turned it the other way. He turned it up. That is the entire revolution, in one gesture: not a new idea, not an argument, just a man taking the money-making spyglass everyone had, and pointing it at the one place nobody thought worth the trouble, because everybody already knew what was up there. Perfect crystal spheres. Unchanging quintessence. A flawless, polished Moon. He turned his miracle away from the horizon, where the fortune was, and up at the sky, where the certainty was — and I am about to wake up inside him, on the night he does it, and find out with his own eyes, in his own cold hands, that the certainty is wrong. And now — this has never happened to me before, not like this — I am inside Galileo Galilei, in the cold garden behind his house in Padua, late on a clear December night, and the body I am wearing is fifty pounds heavier than I expect and buzzing like a struck bell. My breath is fogging. My fingers ache on the wood of the draw-tube. There is a candle guttering on a little table beside me with paper and ink and a dish of thin grey wash, and the whole rest of the world is asleep, and I have the glass braced and steadied and pointed up, at the Moon, and I have been out here, night after night, doing the one thing two thousand years agreed was a waste of a good instrument: looking, hard, at a thing everybody already knows. Because everybody knows the Moon. It is a lamp. It is a flawless silver ball of quintessence, perfect and polished and smooth, the nearest floor of the perfect heavens, and the marks on its face are — what, a smudge, a stain in the crystal, the reflection of our own seas, the philosophers have a dozen tidy answers. So I put my eye to the glass expecting, I think, to see the lamp a little bigger. And I do not see a lamp. I see a world. Oh — I take my eye away, and rub it, and look again, because the mind fights it — but there it is, there it stays: the Moon is not smooth. Along the line where the lit half meets the dark half — the boundary, the edge of the shadow — it is not a clean curve at all. It is ragged. It is broken and toothed and torn, and there are bright points out in the darkness, on the night side, standing alone in the black past the shadow-line, little sparks of light with nothing under them — and I know what those are, I know it in my chest before my head will say it, because I have climbed hills in the dawn: those are mountaintops. Peaks. Peaks so high the sun has already found them while the ground around them is still in night, catching the light exactly the way the top of a mountain catches the first sun while the valley is still dark. There are mountains on the Moon. There are valleys. There are great round pits and hollows, a whole rough, savage, cratered country up there, with a dawn crawling across it — and it is not perfect, and it is not smooth, and it is not quintessence, it is a place, it is rock and shadow and height, it is an earth. And the man I am wearing does not fall to his knees. That is the thing I have to tell you about him, the thing that is going to matter later. He does not weep or pray. He reaches for the pen. Because he is not only astonished — he is astonished the way a craftsman is astonished, with his hands, and he wants to catch it. He starts to draw — I feel his hand doing it, quick and sure, wetting the brush in the grey wash, laying down the lit crescent and the ragged line and the black pocks of the craters, night after night, a whole sequence of them — the loveliest scientific drawings anyone has ever made, and I am inside the joy of it, the pure maker's joy of getting the thing down, exactly, truly. And then he does the thing that is pure Galileo, the thing that tells you he is not a mystic but an engineer of the heavens: he measures the mountains. He watches how long a peak stays lit after the ground below it has gone dark, he takes the length of the shadows, and he does the geometry in his head, right there in the cold — and he works out how tall they are. He is standing in a garden in Padua putting a tape measure on mountains on the Moon. Four miles high, he reckons. Higher than any in Italy. And under all that busy, brilliant, measuring joy — I can feel it, being him — there is something colder and larger opening up. Because if the Moon is a world, rough and cratered like ours, then the great wall between the two storeys, the sacred difference between the corruptible Earth and the incorruptible heavens, the whole architecture of the sealed sky — has a crack in it. A small one. Just one rough grey world where there was supposed to be a perfect lamp.
Galileo: Four miles, if the shadow does not lie. Mountains — on the Moon — higher than any in Italy. And they swore to me it was a flawless sphere.
Bram: He blows on his hands. He looks at his drawings drying on the table. He is forty-five years old and in debt and safe and it is the middle of the night and he is completely, perfectly alone with a sight he is certain no other living eye has ever seen, and I feel him decide, without a word, that he is going to keep looking, and keep looking, and see how far the crack goes. He does not know yet. But I do. It goes all the way. He kept looking. Through the rest of that winter he turned the glass on everything — and everywhere he looked, the tidy sealed sky came a little more apart. He pointed it at the soft glowing band of the Milky Way, that smear of light across the night that the ancients thought was a kind of celestial vapour, and it dissolved — into stars, countless individual stars, thousands where the naked eye saw a blur, more stars than anyone had ever dreamed were there, the sky suddenly deeper and more crowded by orders of magnitude. Star clusters that looked like little clouds burst open into swarms of separate suns. Everywhere the glass looked, there was more — more than the philosophy had room for. And I want you to feel how alone he is with all of it. This is not a man leading a movement. This is one professor, in one cold garden, with a wretched, difficult, one-of-a-kind instrument that basically only he can use well, seeing things that nobody else on the planet has seen or will see for months, sitting on a secret the size of the universe. And then, on the seventh of January, 1610, he pointed the glass at the biggest, brightest thing in the winter sky — the planet Jupiter — expecting nothing in particular. And the universe reached back out of the dark and tapped him on the shoulder. The seventh of January, and I am inside Galileo again, and Jupiter is a hard bright bead of light riding high in the cold, and I have the glass on it, steadying, focusing — and there, strung out in a neat little line right beside the planet, are three small stars. Three tidy points, arranged along a straight line through Jupiter, two on one side and one on the other. And the first thought — his thought, my thought, our thought — is nothing at all. Little fixed stars behind the planet. The sky is full of faint stars; here are three more, happening to lie near the bright one tonight. He notes them down, the way he notes everything now, a little row of dots in the notebook, more out of habit than wonder. And he goes to bed. And that — that ordinary shrug, that and he goes to bed — is the last calm night this man will ever have, and neither of us knows it. Because the next night he looks again, only to check the planet's motion against his three little stars — and the stars are wrong. They have moved. All three are now on the same side of Jupiter, bunched to the west, where last night two were east and one was west. And he frowns — I feel the frown, the first snag of it — and he thinks: well, Jupiter has moved, planets wander, that is what planets do. But the way they have moved is the wrong way, and the wrong amount, and it will not quite fit, and there is a splinter in his mind now that was not there yesterday. He stays up. He waits for the next clear night, and the clouds come, and he stands in the cold cursing the sky, and I feel the splinter working deeper, the not-knowing, the itch of it. And then the sky clears. And now there are four. Four little stars, in a new arrangement again, some east, some west, one gone right in close to the planet — and he stops breathing, the body I am wearing actually stops breathing, and I feel the whole thing arrive in him at once, the way you feel a wave lift the boat before you understand the sea has moved. They are not fixed stars. Fixed stars do not dance around a planet night after night. They are moving — but they are not wandering off, they are not left behind as Jupiter drifts — they are staying with it, beside it, swinging from one side to the other and back, some nights hiding behind it, some nights strung out in a line. They are going around it. Four small bodies, going around Jupiter, the way the Moon goes around us. Four moons. Jupiter has four moons.
Galileo: (a whisper) Four. There are four of them. They keep with him — with Jupiter — they do not fall behind, they go around. Around a centre that is not the Earth. Dio mio. Around, and around.
Bram: And I am inside him at the exact instant the sky changes size, and I will never, as long as I do this, feel anything like it again. Because he understands — faster than I do, faster than any living mind would, because he has been walking toward this his whole life — what it means. For two thousand years the one unbreakable rule, the thing the whole sealed building was built on, the killer argument against a moving Earth, was this: everything goes around us. Everything in the heavens circles the Earth, the one motionless centre, because there can only be one centre and we are it. And here — here, tonight, in a freezing garden in Padua, in a draw-tube of Murano glass — are four bodies that plainly, undeniably, night after recorded night, are going around something that is not the Earth. There is another centre. There is more than one centre. The single strongest objection to Copernicus, the thing that made a moving Earth absurd — how could we keep our Moon if we were flying through space? — just dissolved, because there is Jupiter, wandering across the sky and keeping its four moons the whole way. The sealed building does not have a crack in it any more. The wall is down. And he knows it, in a garden, alone, in the cold, at midnight, the only human being alive who knows it — and I feel the loneliness of that go through him like a blade, the terrible privacy of it, I have seen the thing and the morning will not believe me — and I feel, right behind the loneliness, chasing it, almost on top of it— —the hunger. And this is the thing I came inside him to feel, the thing you can only know from in here, and it is not what the paintings tell you. It is not pure. In the very same instant that he understands he is looking at the ruin of the ancient cosmos — the same breath, the same heartbeat — he is already thinking about what it is worth. He is already composing the book in his head. He is already, God help him, thinking about the name. Because a discovery is nothing, in this world, until a prince puts his name on it — and he knows a prince, a young Grand Duke in Florence he used to tutor in the summers — and I feel the calculation slide into place under the wonder as smoothly as a lens into a tube, no seam between them at all: I will name them for the Medici. Four moons, four Medici brothers. The Medicean Stars. And they will give me Florence. He has been the only living eye on a new universe for about ninety seconds, and he is already spending it. And here is what I have to tell you, from the inside, and it is the truest thing I know about him: those were not two feelings. The wonder and the wanting were not fighting each other; they were one single hunger with two faces — the hunger that drove him into the cold a hundred nights, and the hunger already turning the sky into a career, and in this man they were never, for one instant, two things at all. He writes it down. Night after night, the little diagrams — Jupiter a circle, the moons a scatter of dots that shift and shift — the most valuable few pages of ink in the history of the world, and I feel his hand steady now, the itch gone, replaced by something vast and cold and joyful and hungry, and outside the garden Padua sleeps, and out beyond Padua the whole certain, sealed, two-thousand-year-old sky goes on shining down exactly as it always has, not knowing, not yet, that in this one dark garden a man with a tube of glass has just found the door out of it, and opened it, and looked through — and started, in the very same breath, to work out what he could sell the view for. Let me step out of him for a moment, because you have just watched the single most important act of looking in the history of science, and I want to make absolutely sure you have what it bought. Those four points of light beside Jupiter — we call them moons, and Galileo had just discovered the first moons anyone had ever found beyond our own — but the meaning of them is bigger than four new objects in the sky. Remember the sealed building. Remember that its foundation stone, the one everybody stood on, was that the Earth is the single motionless centre and everything goes round it. That was the argument that made a moving Earth impossible — not the Bible, not Aristotle's prestige, but this hard, physical, common-sense point: if the Earth were flying around the Sun, it would obviously leave its own Moon behind, so plainly it isn't. And Jupiter had just, in front of Galileo's eye, on dated and recorded nights, carried four moons across the sky without dropping a single one. There it was: a planet, moving, keeping its moons. A centre that is not the Earth. More than one centre in the heavens. It did not prove the Earth goes round the Sun — it couldn't, and Galileo knew it — but it demolished the killer objection, and it showed the whole idea of one privileged motionless centre to be exactly that: an idea, not a fact, and now a contradicted one. And there was a second blow folded inside the first, quieter but just as deep. For two thousand years the count of moving bodies in the heavens had been fixed and finished and complete — seven wanderers, the Sun and Moon and five planets, and that was the whole tally, and the completeness of it was part of the perfection. And here were four brand new worlds that no one had ever counted, that no ancient authority had ever named, that had been swinging around Jupiter since long before Aristotle drew a breath — and not one single human being in all of history had ever known they were there, until a man in Padua ground a good enough glass and looked. If the sky could hide four whole worlds in plain sight of everyone, then the sky was not a finished, catalogued, fully-known text after all. It was a place you could still go and discover things in — and that, in the end, is the biggest thing those four dots were worth. That is why a debt-ridden professor with a tube of glass had just become the most quietly dangerous man in Christendom. And of course — being that man — the very first thing he did with the ruin of the ancient cosmos was try to sell it to a prince. By March I am in Venice again, in a hot low room that stinks of ink and wet paper and lamp-oil, and my hands are black to the wrist, because I am a compositor at the printing house of Tommaso Baglioni, and we are setting a book in a tearing hurry. I stand at a slanted case of type picking out the little lead letters backwards and upside down — you learn to read the world mirror-wise in this trade — and snapping them into a line, fast as talking, because the author is in a frenzy to get this thing printed before anyone else can, and the author is a big ruddy professor who keeps leaning over my shoulder smelling of the cold and changing things. It is a small book. Latin, slim, a quarto — Sidereus Nuncius, he is calling it, the Starry Messenger, or maybe the starry message, the Latin can go either way and he likes that it can. And I will tell you, setting a thing letter by letter is the closest reading there is; you cannot skim when you are lifting every character by hand, and so I may be the first person in the world, after the man himself, to really read what this is. And what it is, is impossible. I am setting sentences that say the Moon has mountains. I am setting a picture — a crude woodcut, our engraver flattening the professor's delicate grey washes into hard black shapes, and it half breaks his heart to watch — of a Moon with a jagged edge and pocks all over it.
