Football Tactics: The Whole Game Is a Fight for Space

Football looks like a game about the ball. It is not. At every level that decides matches, it is a game about space and time — who has more room, closer to goal, with more players around the ball than the other team can cover. The ball is just the token you move to prove it. Once you understand that, the intimidating vocabulary that surrounds the modern game — lines, channels, half-spaces, pressing, overloads, rest defence — stops being jargon and turns into what it always was: increasingly precise language for one idea. The reason most "fundamentals" content bounces off a curious newcomer is that it teaches the wrong fundamentals. It drills touch, passing and finishing — the things you do with the ball — when the real foundation is what you do without it: where you stand, and why. A pitch is enormous (105 by 68 metres) and eleven players can never cover all of it, so football is a permanent argument about which parts of that space matter and who gets there first. The whole sport is built on an invisible grid laid over the grass — horizontal lines that split the team into bands, and vertical channels that split the pitch into lanes. Learn to see that grid and the game reorganises itself in front of you from chaos into something closer to chess.

This is a game you can learn in three layers, each earning the next. The basic layer is learning to see the grid: lines, channels, width and depth. The intermediate layer is learning that the whole match is one contest with two jobs — deny space when they have the ball, manufacture it when you have it — using compactness, pressing, overloads and the half-spaces. The masterclass layer is the discovery that the very best teams win the argument before the ball even moves: they pre-arrange superiority through positional play, kill the counter-attack with rest defence, and turn the moment they lose the ball into the best moment to win it back. And then, right at the top, comes the twist that proves none of it is gospel — a rival school that throws the grid away entirely and wins anyway.

The game nobody explains to you

Tens of millions of people play a football video game every year, and a great many of them experience the same quiet frustration: they can pull off the skill moves, they know the star players, and they still lose to someone doing nothing flashy at all. The online advice tells them to "master the fundamentals," then shows them more skill moves. It is the sporting equivalent of being told the secret to writing is good handwriting.

This show has been down the football rabbit hole before — the money that nearly broke a club when Arsenal built their stadium first and paid for it with a lost decade (episode 6, back in June), and the quiet capture of the sport's governance we traced a couple of weeks ago in the FIFA episode (episode 16). Both were about the business around football. This one is about the game itself — the thing the money and the politics are ultimately fighting over — and it turns out the game has a hidden logic almost no one explains.

The thing that actually separates a good player from a bad one is almost never on the ball. It is the decision made a second before the ball arrives — the run into the right space, the body already turned the right way, the pass into the gap that no one else saw was a gap. Those decisions all draw on a single hidden skill: reading space. A professional does not see twenty-one other players and a ball. They see rooms opening and closing, lanes appearing and being shut, a spare team-mate here and an outnumbered one there. This is a rabbit hole worth going all the way down, because at the bottom of it is the surprising truth that football — the most-watched sport on Earth, argued over by billions — runs on a logic almost no one bothers to teach, even though it can be drawn on a napkin. So let us draw it.

The pitch isn't grass — it's a grid

Start with the two words that trip up every beginner: lines and channels. They sound like insider code. They are simply the two directions you can carve a pitch, and once you have both, you have the whole map.

Lines run across the pitch, side to side. A team naturally arranges itself into horizontal bands — a line of defenders, a line of midfielders, a line of attackers. That is what a "formation" like 4-3-3 actually names: four in the back line, three in the middle line, three up front. The single most important space in all of football is the gap between two of these lines — most of all the strip between the opponent's defence and their midfield. A player who receives the ball there, "between the lines," is facing goal with defenders behind him and no one immediately in front — the most dangerous place to get the ball on the whole field. Half of all coaching is about creating players in that gap; the other half is about denying it.

Channels run the other way, up and down the pitch. Picture the field sliced into five vertical lanes: the two touchlines are the wings (lanes one and five), the strip through the centre is the middle (lane three), and the two lanes in between — the ones that have no natural name and so went unnamed for a century — are the half-spaces (lanes two and four). There is also an older, narrower use of the word channel that any defender knows in their bones: the vertical seam between a full-back and the centre-back next to him. A striker who runs into that seam creates instant confusion — is he the full-back's man or the centre-back's? — and that half-second of hesitation is often all an attack needs. In a video game it is the classic through-ball goal: slide the pass into the channel, and the runner is gone.

Put the two together and you have a grid: horizontal lines, vertical channels, thirty-odd boxes over the grass. Every tactical term you will ever hear is about that grid — which box has a spare player, which box is undefended, which box is worth dying for. And the grid exists for one reason: eleven players cannot be everywhere. To cover the width, they get thin vertically. To stay compact, they leave the flanks open. Space is a blanket that is always too small for the bed — pull it up to your chin and your feet get cold. The entire game is the fight over which bits stay covered.

That gives us the first genuinely load-bearing idea. Width and depth are how you make the blanket too small on purpose. A team in possession pushes players right to both touchlines (width) and stretches from its own box to the opponent's (depth), forcing the defence to spread out and thin — because a spread-out defence has gaps between its players, and gaps are where football is won. A team without the ball does the exact opposite: it shrinks. Which is the whole of the next layer.

Defending is the art of denying space

Here is the pivot that turns a beginner into someone who understands the game: almost everything that happens on a football pitch is one of two jobs. When you have the ball, you are trying to manufacture space. When they have it, you are trying to deny it. That is the entire contest, run at speed, thousands of times a match.

Good defending is not eleven brave tackles. It is a compact block: the whole team squeezed into a small area, moving together like a shoal of fish, so there is simply no room to play in. The founding insight belongs to an Italian named Arrigo Sacchi, who in the late 1980s built perhaps the greatest club side ever at AC Milan on a single rule — never allow more than about twenty-five metres between his last defender and his centre-forward. Compress the team into that band, he reasoned, and the opponent has nowhere to receive the ball in comfort; if they somehow break the first line, a team-mate is already right there to cover. "If we played with twenty-five metres from the last defender to the centre-forward," he said, "given our ability, nobody could beat us." He was close to right.

Compactness has two directions, matching our grid. Vertical compactness is the squeeze between the lines — keep the bands close so there is no room to receive between them. Horizontal compactness is the squeeze across the channels — slide the whole block toward whichever side the ball is on, conceding the far wing (the least dangerous space) to smother the middle (the most dangerous). Watch any good defensive team and you will see it: the ball goes left, the entire shape shuffles left as a unit, leaving acres on the empty right flank that they are perfectly happy to give you, because a pass all the way over there buys them the two seconds they need to shuffle back.

Where the block sits gives you the next piece of vocabulary. A low block defends deep, near its own goal — dangerous space minimised, but you invite pressure. A high block or high line defends far up the pitch, squeezing the opponent into their own third. The high line has a superpower and a fatal flaw. The superpower is the offside rule: because an attacker is offside if he has slipped beyond the last defender — nearer the goal — at the moment the ball is played to him, a defence can step forward in unison and leave that attacker stranded offside — using the offside line as a movable wall to delete the space behind them. The flaw is that the space behind them is exactly where a quick striker wants to run, so one mistimed step and it is a foot-race to your own goalkeeper. Every high line is a bet: we are so well-drilled that we can hold this line and squeeze you, and you will not catch us out. When it works it is suffocating. When it fails it is a highlight reel.

Sacchi's real revolution was even deeper: he defended space, not men. Before him, Italian football man-marked — each defender shadowed a specific opponent wherever he wandered, which meant the attacker chose where the defender went. Sacchi's players instead each guarded a zone and reacted to four reference points at once: the ball, the space, their opponents and their team-mates. That shift — from marking a man to controlling a region of the grid — is the philosophical root of nearly everything modern. Football stopped being eleven private duels and became one organism defending territory.

Attacking is the art of manufacturing it

If a good defence has erased the space, how do you get it back? You cannot conjure room out of nowhere against eleven organised players. So you do the next best thing: you create a numbers advantage in one place, which forces the defence to make a choice, and every choice opens a gap somewhere else.

The cleanest example is called overload to isolate, and it is beautiful once you see it. Flood one side of the pitch with players — full-back, midfielder, winger all crowding the left. The defence, sensibly, slides across to deal with the crowd. But a defence is a blanket: pulling it hard to the left uncovers the right, where you have quietly left one fast attacker alone against one defender. Now switch the ball across in one long pass, and you have a one-versus-one in space — the most dangerous situation in football — manufactured on purpose. You overloaded one zone specifically to isolate another. The defence was never beaten by skill; it was beaten by arithmetic.

The half-spaces are where this arithmetic pays the most. Recall those two unnamed lanes between the centre and the wings. A player receiving there gets the best of both worlds: he is central enough to shoot or thread a pass to goal, but wide enough that the pitch opens diagonally in front of him, giving him a clear line of sight to the goal and to runners without having to turn a full defender. The wing gives you crosses; the centre is a traffic jam of defenders; the half-space, in between, gives you angles. This is not a matter of taste. It shows up in the data.

That patch of grass — central, just outside the box — is important enough to have earned its own name among analysts: Zone 14. A ball delivered from there into the area is around four times more likely to produce a goal than a ball swung in from the flank, because it arrives with the goal in front of the runner rather than across him, and because a through-ball from the centre splits the defence into a straight foot-race. Which is why so much of what looks like patient, sideways possession is really a slow hunt for one player, free, in Zone 14 or the half-space beside it.

The last piece of the attacking toolkit is the most elegant and the hardest to see: the third-man run. Two defenders can comfortably watch two attackers passing to each other — they simply track the ball and the obvious receiver. But defenders instinctively follow the ball, which means a third attacker, arriving late from somewhere the defenders were not looking, is often completely free. So you use the first pass as bait — A to B — purely to fix the defenders' eyes, while C sprints into the space behind them and B releases him first time. The defence did everything right and still lost the man, because the danger was never the pass they were watching. It was the run they were not.

Pressing: how the best teams defend by attacking

For decades, the two jobs — attack and defend — were treated as separate phases. Then a generation of coaches noticed the seam between them, and modern football was born.

The insight is that a football match is not two states but four moments, cycling endlessly: you have the ball; you lose it; they have the ball; you win it back. The two hand-overs — the transitions — each last only about five to eight seconds, and they are the most dangerous moments on the pitch. The instant a team loses the ball, it is at its most vulnerable: players have pushed forward to attack and are now out of position to defend. And the instant a team wins the ball, the opponent is in exactly that scrambled state.

Jürgen Klopp built two Borussia Dortmund title teams and a European champion at Liverpool on a single line: "No playmaker in the world can be as good as a good counter-pressing situation." Counter-pressing — or gegenpressing, its German name — means that the moment you lose the ball, instead of retreating to get organised, you swarm it immediately, right where you lost it, to win it straight back. Why? Because the opponent who just won the ball is unbalanced and facing his own goal, and if you strip it from him now, you are attacking a defence that is still scrambled. Winning the ball high up the pitch is worth more than any pass, because it comes with a disorganised opponent attached. Klopp called it "heavy metal football," and it works: at their peak his Liverpool teams forced a turnover roughly every seven to nine opposition passes — a suffocating rate that never let the other side settle.

Pressing is not random chasing, though; that just tires you out and pulls your shape apart. Good pressing runs on triggers — pre-agreed signals that say attack the ball now, all together. A heavy touch, a pass played backwards, a throw-in, a ball rolled to a weak defender: any of these is a cue for the whole team to jump as a unit. The genius is that the press is a form of attack. It is how a team without the ball tries to score.

Which raises the obvious question — how do you play against a swarm? The answer is press-resistance, and its cleverest exponent is an Italian coach, Roberto De Zerbi, who did something almost perverse: he told his centre-backs to invite the press deliberately. A De Zerbi defender will stop the ball dead under his foot in his own third, with a striker sprinting at him, and wait — baiting the opponent to commit. The moment the presser bites, the space that presser just vacated becomes the target. And rather than pass straight into the man behind the press (who would be tackled), De Zerbi uses a third man as a stepping-stone: a midfielder drops in, bounces the ball first-time to a runner behind the now-broken line, and suddenly the entire press has been turned into an advantage. It is the third-man run again, but used defensively, to escape pressure rather than to create a chance — proof that these ideas are not a list of separate tricks but variations on the same underlying grammar of space.

The masterclass: winning the game before the ball moves

Everything so far happens in the flow of play — react, press, exploit. The highest level of football does something stranger. It arranges the board so carefully that the advantage exists before the ball is even passed. This is positional play, or by its Spanish name, juego de posición: the philosophy of Johan Cruyff, inherited by Pep Guardiola, that has dominated the elite game for two decades.

Its single organising idea is superiority — always, everywhere, engineer a situation where you have an edge — and it comes in three flavours worth naming because they explain almost every clever thing you will see a top team do. Numerical superiority is simply more players than them in a given zone: a spare man. The classic move is a midfielder dropping between the two centre-backs during build-up, turning a two-against-two against the opposition's strikers into a three-against-two — an extra body to pass around them. Positional superiority is having a player in a position the defence cannot easily reach — between their lines, or behind them — where he will get time and space even without a numbers advantage. And qualitative superiority is a mismatch of ability: getting your best dribbler one-on-one against their weakest defender, in space, and letting talent do the rest.

Chase all three and you are always hunting the same prize: the free man — the unmarked player who, because the defence has run out of bodies to cover everyone, is left open. Find him, feed him, and the attack flows through the one player the defence forgot. Guardiola's refinement was to use his own goalkeeper as an outfield player in the build-up, so that his team always had one extra man in the first line and the defence could never quite mark everyone. It is why elite build-up can look so slow and so boring: the team is not being timid. It is patiently moving the ball until the maths produces a free man, and then it strikes.

To make this reliable, positional play imposes almost architectural rules on where players stand. Spread across the grid so that no more than two team-mates occupy the same vertical channel and no more than three share the same horizontal line — never two players on the same passing lane, always staggered at different heights so there is always a forward option and always an angle. It looks rigid, and that is the point: structure is what guarantees a free man keeps appearing, game after game, rather than by luck.

The final, subtlest layer is what happens while all this attacking is going on: rest defence. Even at their most dominant, the best teams keep a small, deliberate group of players — typically a back-three-ish shape of two centre-backs and a holding midfielder, or a "3-2" underneath the front five — positioned not to attack but to strangle a counter before it starts. They are resting, defensively, in the middle of their own attack, so that the instant possession is lost, the opponent's escape routes are already blocked and the counter-press can go to work. It is the same idea Sacchi started with — control space, not men — extended to its logical end: control the space for the counter-attack before the counter-attack exists. This is what "controlling a game" really means. Not having the ball more. Having the space arranged so completely that the opponent can neither attack you nor keep you out.

The counter-argument — and how to actually see it

It would be easy to finish there, with the grid as the secret code of football. But the honest answer is that the grid is a lens, not a law — and the proof is that one of the most admired teams of recent years threw it away and won beautifully anyway.

In Brazil, a coach named Fernando Diniz built a style that tactical writers call relationism, and it is the near-opposite of Guardiola's positionism. Where positional play spreads players evenly across fixed zones and trusts the structure, relationism does the reverse: it clusters players close together around the ball, usually bunched on one flank, trusting relationships and quick, instinctive combinations rather than pre-assigned positions. If positionism is about symmetry, relationism is about tilt — pile bodies near the ball, overwhelm that little pocket of the pitch with short one-touch passes, and if you lose it you are already swarming to win it back. It looks chaotic and improvised next to Guardiola's geometry, and it produces some of the most joyful football on the planet.

The two schools disagree about method and agree completely about the destination. Both are hunting the same thing this whole rabbit hole has been circling: more players than the opponent, in the space that matters, at the moment it matters. Positionism gets there by controlling the whole grid; relationism gets there by swarming one square of it. That they arrive at the same place by opposite routes is the strongest possible evidence that the underlying game really is about space and superiority, and everything else — the formations, the named runs, the philosophies — is just a set of dialects for saying so.

So how do you actually start seeing it, rather than just reading about it? The single most transferable habit is the one professionals train obsessively and amateurs never think about: scanning. Before the ball comes to you, look around — repeatedly — and build a mental picture of where the space is, so that when you receive it your decision is already made. Watching, the equivalent is to stop following the ball with your eyes and instead pull back and watch the shape: notice the block sliding side to side, notice the gap opening between the lines, notice the spare man before the commentator does. Football rewards the eye that sees the room, not the foot that touches the ball. And the wonderful thing is that this is learnable. The grid was always there. Most people simply never had it drawn for them.

Bottom line

Football is not a game about the ball. It is a game about space and time, played by moving a ball around to prove who controls them. Lay the invisible grid over the pitch — horizontal lines dividing the team into bands, vertical channels dividing the field into lanes — and every piece of jargon collapses into one idea: get more of your players than theirs into the box on that grid that decides the goal, and stop them doing it to you.

You learn it in three layers, and each earns the next. First you learn to see the grid — lines, channels, width and depth. Then you learn the two jobs that fill every second of a match: deny space when they have the ball, using the compact block, the high or low line, and the press; manufacture it when you have it, using overloads, the half-spaces, Zone 14 and the third-man run. Then, at the top, you learn that the finest teams settle the argument before the ball even moves — pre-arranging superiority through positional play, and killing the counter with rest defence — while a rival school proves it can be done by throwing the map away and swarming instead.

None of this requires a single skill move. It requires an eye. And once you have it, you never watch a match the same way again — because you are no longer watching the ball. You are watching the space, which was the real game all along.

That single strip is why, honestly, half of all coaching is about getting a player into that gap. The other half is stopping it.

Sam: Got it. So that's lines — across. Channels are the other way?

Alex: Up and down. Picture the pitch sliced into five vertical lanes. The two touchlines are the wings — lanes one and five. The strip straight through the centre is the middle — lane three. And the two lanes in between…

Alex: The ones that literally had no name for about a century. Those are the half-spaces — lanes two and four. Hold onto those, they come back in a big way.

Sam: And there's a second meaning of "channel" too, isn't there? I've heard defenders talk about it like a threat.

Sam: Okay, so if the defence is a too-small blanket… as the attacking team, I want to stretch it. Make it cover even less.

Alex: Now you're playing. That's the first genuinely load-bearing idea: width and depth. When you've got the ball, you push players right out to both touchlines — that's width — and you stretch from your own box to theirs — that's depth. You're forcing the defence to spread out and go thin.

Sam: Because a spread-out defence has gaps between the players.
